Rating: Summary: great story Review: Hi: I run a home-day-care. All the boys at around 1st to 3rd grade level have really ejoyed this book. Great for getting the boy reading that isn't showing much interest. It is more about adventure and fun than about baseball. You will be disappointed in the book if you are getting it only because it says baseball cards. It is a great adventure when an older man and a young boy become friends and they go under the sea to the man's special underwater treasure room. Very imaginative.
Rating: Summary: educational as well as fun Review: I just read this to my 5 year-old and it received a few laughs, but neither the engagement or cries of "HILARIOUS" that attend other books I've read him. This book is unusual in showing a nice intergenerational frienship. The first few pages are enchanting, showing inventions made of recycled "junk," and the two friends sharing fishcakes with maple syrup! As they travel underwater to a secret hideaway filled with other old collectables, your child might gain a little appreciation that one person's flotsam and jetsam can be another's hobby. But don't expect too much about baseball, nor too much humor. All in all, it's a nice, clearly written book (albeit with a mixed message about materialism)that should prove entertaining to young children!
Rating: Summary: This book was a very, very good book for kids and grown-ups! Review: I thought this book was great because there was a little comedy. The characters do funny things. For example, when Roger does the Hokey Pokey in front of mermaids, it is funny. People who have a good imagination would like the book. The ship in this book was made of junk. Whiz kids might like to make a model of it and they would enjoy reading the book.
Rating: Summary: educational as well as fun Review: This book was perfect for my 6 year old son. It taught him about the importance of starting a hobby and the value it has to him and to others. More importantly, it was a book that I did not have to beg him to read. He wanted to learn how to read it himself. It has Baseball. It has Submarines. It has Mermaids. What more can you ask from a book.
