Summary: Don't you know there's a war on?
Review: Avi's novel takes place in Brooklyn, New York during WWII. Sixteen year old Howie Crispers tells of his adventures as a fifth grader during one significant week of March 1943 .His father is a merchant marine fighting Nazis on the North Atlantic sea. Each day Howie, his sister, and his mother wait anxiously to hear from his dad. Howie has more things to worry about when he finds out his favorite teacher is being fired. He and his best friend Denny must find a way to save their teacher's job. Avi's story was too easily solved and had no suspense, though the story was set in an exceptional time, it wasn't satisfactory reading. Some readers may like this book, but I don't recommend it to all.
About the aurthor: Avi was born in 1937 in New York City. When Avi's first child was born he began his career in writing. His first book was published in 1970, since then he has published over 30 books. Avi has many award winning books such as: Nothing but the Truth, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and many other books.

Summary: read this book
Review: Do not read this book. Everything was negative. Everyone was poor with no food or money, and couldn't afford a house. There was no food because it all went overseas to our troops in Germany. There was no transportation because they couldn't afford it.

The book carried on and on about how great and nice their teacher was, the war, and where their dads were positioned. The whole book was a joke, and it was just so boring because it would just go on and on.

The story just revolved around Ms. Gossim and the war. Like Ms. Gossim this Ms. Gossim that just because she was the nicest teacher and she was going to get fired. Then it goes on and on about war. They don't get through one day without talking about the war. Whoopdy-do I want some action! In conclusion, don't read this "book". It is negative, it carried on and on about stupid subjects, and everything was negative.

Summary: I Frankie dont like this book
Review: Don't You Know There's a War On? is about a boy who lives in Brookyn during World War II.The boy's name is Howie Crispers and his best friend is Denny. In the story the boys make a plan to save their teacher, Mrs.Gossim, from being fired. She is going to be fired because she is going to have a baby and they don't want a teacher being pregnant in school. I would give this book two stars because it is a very slow book and it takes forever for something good to happen. If you like books that are about school you might want to read this book. There were some funny parts in the book, but it was just a boring book overall. In the beginning, they talk about the war then it jumps only to saving Mrs.Gossim.I will never read this book again!

Review: For my book report I read the book "Don't You Know There's a War On?", by A.V.I. This novel was about two boys, Howie and Denny, and their lovely teacher Miss Rolanda. Howie is an adventerous boy who has a wild imagination.Denny, Howies best friend, has a father in the war, battleing the Nazi General Romel in North Africa.Miss Rolanda is their fith grade teacher at P.S. 8.Miss Rolanda comforts her students during the war, and helps them forget about their worries. But when Howie finds out his teacher will get fired, he will do anything to get her back. The setting of this book takes place in P.S. 8, and at Howies house. The time frame of this book takes place during 1943, Brooklyn, New York. The theme of this book is trustworthy, romance, and standing up for what you believe in.I liked this book and I am glad I read it. Tiffany Riley

Summary: A glimpse into a boy's life
Review: Howie Crisper has a few things on his mind. He needs to pass his weekly math test, he worries about his dad away in World War II, and the principal of his school in Brooklyn may be a Nazi spy. All those take a back seat when he stumbles upon the news that the principal has plans to fire his teacher, Miss Gossim. Howie is determined to get to the bottom of the whole mess, and save his favorite teacher. Set in Brooklyn in the midst of the second world war, "Don't You Know There's a War On?" captures a time of great hope and idealism. Howie is a regular fifth grader, who fights with his sister and hates to see his mother cry. He finds himself tryong to help a favorite teacher and also deal with changing circumstances. Avi keeps the tone of the book faithful to the age of the main character and the times. Howie is able to face some of his boggest fears and finds he does have the ability to help, and at the book'd end we find him at the war's end remembering that favorite teacher and the improbable role he played in her life. A real treat.

Summary: The War of Adventures
Review: I loved the book Don't You Know There's a War On by Avi. Everything is going mad in Howie Crispers life. Howie lives in a place where everybody thinks Nazi spys are everywhere. Howie lives in Brooklyn, New York and thinks that his princpal, Dr. Lomister, is a Nazi spy. Later in the book he finds out that his teacher is being fired. Also trying to to keep track of were his dad is on the ocean and trying to keep away from Nazi U-Boats,World War II is hectic for Howie Crispers. If you like a real life adventure, then you should pick up this book and read it.
