Rating: Summary: Maybe too well written for toddlers Review: I bought this book for my 2 1/2-year-old twins, but a lot of it goes over their heads. Obviously the author has talent, but she's more of a poet than a storyteller. Perhaps she should be targeting an older crowd. This book has elements suited for toddlers (big pictures, only one sentence per page) but the writing is too sophisiticated and abstract for them, and the story too disjointed. I guess it would be good for a one-year-old or younger who just enjoys hearing a parent read a peaceful book (e.g., "Eyes close. There is a drowsy hush. Darkness swells into a colorful dream. And if the moon could talk..."). But my kids prefer books with stories they can understand, and even repeat. This ain't that.
Rating: Summary: Our Family's Current Favorite! Review: I love this book! The pictures are amazing--the text, more like poetry than prose. To me, it is so beautiful that it actually makes me a little weepy. Best of all, my 19-month old son brings it to us again and again (saying "moon, moon"). It's one of the few "bigger-kid" books he will actually sit through! To me, it is nothing like Goodnight Moon (which we also love)--it is a whole different category!
Rating: Summary: Nicest book ever. Poetry. A unique masterpiece in this field Review: I would like to give 10 stars. This is certainly the nicest book I ever read to my children, and we have so many books at home. They are so fascinated with the poetic text and the beautiful indoor and outdoor artwork. This book is clever, delicate, profound, moving. It makes children dream and learn. I am sure it will be around for as long as Goodnight Moon has been with us. This is a unique masterpiece and people here in France have understood that : the book is sold out.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Bedtime Story Review: Night is falling and inside a house a little girl is getting ready for bed. Her father reads to her, her mother tucks her in. She sees and hears all the familiar, comforting house sights and sounds, closes her eyes and begins to dream. Outside, the moon is watching over the world. And if the moon could talk, it would tell of woodland creatures hurrying home for supper and sand blowing in the desert, waves crashing on the shore, birds safe in their nests and lion cubs safe with their mother. It would talk of stars coming out to shine on the world and a little girl curled up with her stuffed rabbit, fast asleep. And if the moon could talk, it would whisper, Good Night..... Kate Banks has written a lovely, simple bedtime story full of imagery and magic, pre-schoolers will want to hear again and again, night after night. Her soothing, understated text is beautifully complimented by Georg Hallensleben's lush and expressive artwork and together they've authored a story that will capture your youngster's imagination as he/she are lulled gently to sleep. And If the Moon Could Talk is a must for all home libraries and is sure to become a classic in the years ahead.
Rating: Summary: THIS TOPS OUR TODDLER'S LIST OF FAVOURITES!! Review: Our 20-month old daughter is a little bookworm and this book is truly one that we take along everywhere. It's our favorite "last book" before bed. She's read it so many times, she's memorized it! Beautifully illustrated and a charming story.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely beautiful - one of my son's favorites Review: The paintings (you just can't call them pictures) in this book are lovely and peaceful. The text is poetic and beautiful. It is made to read at bedtime. My son is a bedtime resistor, but he loves to pull this book out and have it read to him. It is a wonderful transition to sleep.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Children's Book! Review: This is a fantastic child's book! It is gorgeously illustrated with mysterious, lush, beautiful night scenes; the text is rhythmic, soothing, subtle poetry of the highest quality. I've been reading this book to my niece for three years and she loves it still! When she was four I'd read it to her and she would get to "read" the refrain "And if the moon could talk" each time it appeared. When she was five and six she'd read it with ever-increasing ease as she learned to read; now that she's seven we alternate pages, but she still has her favorite parts she will not allow me to read--she insists on having those pages to herself. We imagine we live in the beautiful town, assigning houses to grandma, uncles, cousins. This is a book to treasure!
Rating: Summary: By all means, get this book! Review: This is my 21-month-old son's absolute favorite book. Since finding it in our library a week ago, it is the only book that he lets me read to him at bedtime. Hallensleben's lush and dreamy illustrations, along with Banks' carefully chosen text works like magic to lull our little guy into a deep, peaceful sleep. If I dare put the book down for a second or suggest another book, he gestures wildly until I return to his favorite. Hallensleben is a remarkable artist, and adults and children alike are transported into his magical world. I can't wait for this and two other Banks/Hallensleben collaborations to arrive in the mail.
Rating: Summary: Rythmic prose, colorful art. Review: This is my favorite bedtime book... my son also enjoys it. I think the writing and art are both calming and imaginative. Ignore the complaints about this being a rip-off of goodnight moon. It is a great book and you and your child will enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: A rare gem! Review: This is one of my very favorite picture books, as it is equally enjoyable for children and adults. This treasure of a book is aesthetically pleasing to both eyes and ears, and its message sweet, imaginative, and meaningful. The paintings are richly colorful and simply beautiful, and the text is lyrical and soothing. It's a perfect bedtime story that begs reading again and again and again.
