Taking Aesop's familiar gems and re-setting them into witty verse, Yolen polishes the old stories and makes them sparkle. The poetry, while seemingly simple, can lead kids through a bit of puzzling before they can explicate each line, even when they know the original fable. A great book for teachers.

Review: While many modern authors have attempted to recycle old standbys, with this or that particular twist, this is one of the more noteworthy efforts I've seen. Especially for children already familiar with the fables of Aesop, these condensed versions are written in easy-to-understand but entertaining sing-song rhyme. It has many of the most familiar fables, vivid artwork, & lends itself well to being a "bedtime book". It may not be destined to be a classic, but it easily qualifies as a worthy effort in its niche.
