Rating: Summary: Hello Freud Review: After having read many books in the Edith and Mr. Bear series as a child I was thrilled and overcome with extreme emotion to have found them again. Having two small girls of my own I hope they will love them as much as me and my twin sister did growing up. I also found two of my favorites (Edith and the Kitten, and Edith Learns and Lesson) on a rare books site, and quickly snatched them up. This time I will cherish them and hopefully I will be able to keep them for my grandchildren and great grandchildren. I've been searching for these books for over 4 years, my search is over. Thank You.
Rating: Summary: I've finally found her! Review: As a young child I was waiting at the hospital to visit my Grandmother and someone had left this wonderful book outside on a picnic table. I looked through it as my uncle read it to me.Unlike all of my books at home, I could actually understand on my own what was going on. When it was time to leave, as it wasn't my book, I left it on that bench. I have spent the last 30 years trying to describe this doll to people so I could find her again. This was an important book to a small girl back then and an important book to this woman today. The photographs are so beautiful! Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTE NOSTALGIA Review: I can't believe The Lonely Doll and Edith and Mr. Bear, two wonderful books are still available! While I've never owned the latter, I can say that I do have the former, and it brings back warm memories. The pictures are absolutely charming, and the story line teaches a valuable lesson. I now plan to get Edith and Mr. Bear, so I can have the complete set!
Rating: Summary: The only books from my childhood that still disturb me. Review: I read these Edith books as a child (probably 3-5 years old), and in the twenty years that have passed I am still feeling disturbed by them, DESPITE the fact that I have NOT reread the books as an adult. I have had images of the stiff photograph-illustrations of the doll (Edith), in her stiff poses and eery looks. Even so, for the past 20 years I couldn't pinpoint any specific reason for why I felt such an undercurrent in these books. I devoured books of all types as a child and these are the only books/series that gave me nightmares. Just last week I found out that my sister-in-law had also read the Edith books as a child and had a similar experience; she then offered a partial "explanation": she said she recently read an article on the author that claimed the author was physically abused. I had never known that until last week, and I do not know if her information on the abuse is accurate, but now at least my experience makes sense to me. I am NOT trying to bad-mouth the author, and I am NOT saying that just because someone is abused that we shouldn't read their books. I only want to give parents a heartfelt caution and say that more than one child has been seriously disturbed by these books in a way that no other books have impacted them. Please do not think that I am just your run-of-the-mill book-banning, over-sensitive reader. As a child, these books really disturbed me; I am frankly surprised they're being reprinted.
Rating: Summary: Hello Freud Review: This is not a children's book, nor is it for family-abuse survivors. This is an autobiographical therapeutical photomontage which is deeply disturbing. A must-read for all those who wish to understand why and why people punish children through deep psychological manipulation, and how children use art to recover from their families.
Rating: Summary: BEWARE Review: This is NOT an appropriate children's book! As a child, I found this highly upsetting. It is no wonder the author was disturbed-see "The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll". It does not deserve one star.
