Rating: Summary: Cute book about dragons and vikings in all shapes and sizes! Review: As a book seller I read a lot of children's books, and I quite enjoyed this one! It's about a young viking named Hiccup, who like every other young viking boy, has to catch and train his own dragon, to be allowed to stay in the tribe The Hairy Hooligans! However neither Hiccup nor his dragon Toothless are as fierce and hooligan-like as they should be... And that's a problem when you're the chief's son! But Hiccup has other qualifications... When the viking tribe is severly threatened, he comes up with a brilliant, if somewhat dangerous, solution. The book is also a dragon training guide, and there are lots of great illustrations and funny dragon trivia! The dragon descriptions are priceless - and the viking characters (like Gobber the Belch) are really funny too. The story has a good pace, and it's good for children who are beginning to read full lenght stories by themselves. (Or adults who enjoy reading good stories to their kids)
Rating: Summary: How to train your dragon Review: My son aged 7 absolutely loved this book. It has to be the best thing he has read all year. The writing is funny and accessible and manages to conjure up fantastic images in a seemingly effortless manner. The chapters are a managable length and contain an adventure and a cliff hanger each. I read my son one chapter a night and he would read the next chapter to himself. The vikings have names that make little boys giggle, and there's enough illustrations to keep them going too. The hero is put upon and weary and very believable. The rest of the vikings and all the dragons are recognisible and obnoxious and so real that we cared what happened to them. This is a fun, exciting and highly reccommended book.
