Summary: A depressing, but well-written historical fiction book.
Review: For Emma Simpson, life is shattered day by day from the deaths of those she loves because of the horrible Civil War. The late 1800's are sad years for most Americans, but Emma is having it particularly rough. When her brother's body arrives at her house, she learns of his tragic death and hopes that no one else from her family be taken. But people that were close to her soon
become casualties of the war, and death's presence is inevitable in her town. Her mother is sick as well, and her only friend is slowly being driven mad of the war and its casualties. Will Emma ever find hope to move on even after everything is torn apart from her? When Will This Cruel War Be Over was an extremely depressing but well-written story, and the very first book in the Dear America series.I didn't like it so much, however, because all it seemed to be was deaths upon deaths every day, tragedy upon tragedy, and nothing but misery in Emma's life.

Summary: The Civil War Diary of Emma Simpson
Review: I have been reading a book called When Will This Cruel War be Over? The Civil War diary of Emma Simpson by Barry Denenberg. This book is a diary of a little girl named Emma Simpson who is living through the Civil War. She writes all of her thoughts, hopes and dreams in her diary. She has a very hard life during the civil war. Her father, brother and uncle have all gone to in to the war to fight the Yankees/Negroes. At the beginning of the book her family and she found out that her brother/Brother Cole has just been killed. Her aunt and cousins come out to take care of her and her mother. A little bit later in the book her mother dies. So her father writes her and tell her everything is going to be OK. After a few chapters the Yankees make Emma, her aunt, and her cousins live on the 3rd floor so the Yankees can use their house as a hospital. Emma helps out but wishes they will just leave her family alone. When they do finally leave they trash the house. The only room on the 1st floor that isn’t trash in the library because that is where the general’s office was. Emma has gone through a lot but she goes through a lot more. When the war is over Emma and her family has gone through a lot of pain. (...) This is the war that a few days after President Abraham Lincoln got killed.
This is a very historical book. I would recommend this book to 7th and 8th graders across the USA and in other countries too. If you don’t like books that are about wars or suffering then I wouldn’t recommend this book. I liked this book.

Summary: When will this cruel war be over
Review: I have read this book twice, and it is just amazing! All ages can enjoy it. Although short, this Dear America book, features all the elements needed for a good book. If you've never read on of these books, they're written as a diary of someone from a certain time period. And although most of these entires are short, sometimes they can be more powerful than the long ones. An example would be, the entire that simply says "Mother died today." In the back of the book there are several pages(and pictures) that tell you about the way things were during a certain time. So after reading the book, it's great to be able to look through that. It is beautiful written, and can teach you about a time period, and the people that lived during it. Great for kids who are interested in history!

Summary: It could have been more eventful
Review: I liked it, but it was not very eventful.I think the book has great info on the Civil War and a lot of emmotion, but most of it was about people getting sick and dying, which of course did happen quite often in the Civil War so I cannot say the book was bad or did not give enough info. This book is a good book to do for a book report.

Throughout the book you will fall in love with the character Emma Simpson and all her remaining family members. There is also a little romance in the book so it keeps people reading. The book contains beautiful words, some a little chalenging, but otherwise the book is in my top 6 or 7.

Summary: one of Best Edtions to the Dear America Series
Review: In "When Will This Cruel War Be Over?", Emma is a southern bell, she is 14 and in the middle of the famous Civil War(1861-1865) in her diary she expresses her feelings of fear, hope, life and death. After losing her Mother,Brother, and favoitre niece,Elizabeth. The Yankees take over her home and her love, Tally is far from home and far from her. Emma must face the hardships alone after her cousin Elizabeth has a nerves breakdown.Emma is a very strong, intelligent, and beautiful girl must wonder will the war will be over? I say if you want to read one of many great Dear America Books, I say read Emma's diary.

Summary: Civic war and a diary of a girl
Review: This book is about a girl and here life in the war. I think this is a sad book. I did not like the parts were here famly or friends died from the war or from a bad sickness. I liked the part at the begining where she talked about her favorite holiday and what it was like. I would recommend it to anyone who likes sad books. The book is also boring. I only gave the book two stars because it wasn't very good.

Summary: Hysterical and Brief- Luckily
Review: This book is definately not the best Dear America. It was too short, depressing, (which I can deal with if a book is well written, but this was not) and hysterical.

Barry Denemberg did not take the time to develop any of the characters, the setting or even think up an engaging plot. Instead, he threw the reader in at the deep end, so to speak.

The fact that Emma was blatantly racist did not greatly affect my impression of her, because if I had been able to relate to her in any other aspects of her life, or at least understand what was going on in her mind, (or indeed any of the other characters) I would have understood that Mr.Denenmberg was simply truthfully portraying a young girl in the South during the Civil War.

Overall, I was grateful that the book finished swiftly, and, if anything, despite taking the easy way out by killing so many characters off and bringing constant death and destruction into the pages, it gave me a slight edge on the harshness of the Civil War, and once again proved how hard it was for the fading Southern Belles left behind in the losing battle.

Summary: great and very realistic
Review: When will this crule war be over is one of the best books I've ever read, and it is very possible that this could have been based on a true story, Emma Sipson is facing he challenge of living at home with her mother and anut and cousin, her father is off at war and her brother is dead she fears that her father will die and is giving up all hope of his return. Emma is forced to live how she is not accostomed to, there are no men around except for some of their slaves and 2 neighbors. The diary is a year long running from December23,1863- December 25, 1864. I tis a wonderful book and very sad I must say. If I tell you any more it would be giving the entire bok away so read it and enjoy it!
