Junie B. Jones and the Mushy Gushy Valentine (Junie B. Jones, Book 14)

Summary: If You Value Manners And Respect, Don't Bother
Review: Although this seems to be the minority of opinion, I have to agree with the other people who gave negative reviews for this item. Don't even bother reading it. Junie B. Jones sets a horrible example to children, with typical phrases being, "I runned all the way". And I'm not blowing this out of proportion. There are grammatical errors on every page, and they are intentional. And to top it all off, this book is geared towards readers aged about 5-7, kids just starting to read chapter books. Reading this will not help them develop good language skills. Quite the contrary, it will confuse kids.

And don't forget Junie B's behavior: rudeness to parents, referring to her teacher as 'Mrs', labelling someone as 'Meanie Jim', the list goes on. And parents are justifying the reading of such books because they're 'funny'. I'd think that we as parents would take more responsibility. I mean, kids may enjoy this book, but there are plenty of good children's books they can enjoy which don't enforce bad grammar. I feel strongly that we should think of the book as a bad example to children learning the rules of English. Aren't there other books that don't set such examples and are entertaining? Does a book need to have evident grammar errors in order to be funny?
Personally, I don't recommend this book.

Summary: We couldn't wait to read this book!
Review: I had read all of the other Junie B. Jones books to my first graders earlier in the year. When we found out that there was a new one, my students begged me to buy it! We saved it for Valentine's week...and it did not disappoint! The kids LOVED it! It was agony for them to have to wait for the next chapter to be read! We even made a graph of who they thought sent Junie B. the "mushy gushy Valentine". We can't wait for the next Junie B. Jones book!

Review: I work with teenagers and have found the most exciting "things" to focus their attention: Junie B. Jones books. The youth absolutely love reading about Junie B.'s adventures. They have even picked up some Junie B. lingo. I am completely enthralled by Barbara Parks and this kindergartener...and book number 14 continues to captivate readers, young and old a like. All Junie B. fans will literally scream when they discover the true identity of her secret Valentine.

Review: My little brother is a Junie B. Jones fanatic! My mother doesn't like to buy me books or take me to the library because the books I read 'mess up' my mind. So I decided to snatch some of my brother's books. This book was so cute. It reminded me of myself when I was Junie B's age. Junie B. gets a Valentine, the biggest and fanciest of all in her class, but it was signed anonymously. When I found out at the end who it was, I was in a fit of giggles and couldn't believe it. This book is a must-read for Junie B. Jones fans although I think some parents wouldn't like it...
