Rating: Summary: Goldilocks Revised Review: After reading "Goldilocks and The Three Bears" by James Marshall many children may start listening to their mothers about taking shortcuts. Goldilocks is portrayed as a naughty neighbor when she takes a shortcut through the woods and rummages through a house eating porridge, breaking chairs, and falling asleep on a perfectly sized bed. What she did not realize was that three bears lived there. This would prove to be a rude awakening for her to possibly start listening to her mother. The brightly colored watercolor and ink illustrations are complimented by vivid lines, varied textures, and abstract shapes to portray the adventurous movement of the text. The balance of design shows a humorous side to a well known story through the text and variety of full page and bordered illustrations which received a Caldecott Honor in 1989. This book showcases the many emotions a child may have on an unsafe journey through the woods which Marshall paints vividly on both Goldilocks and the three bear's facial expressions. Marshall's modern tone throughout the book makes this version of the classic folktale seem socially relevant and up to date keeping the interest of the reader. This is a must have for every child and their classroom's book collection.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful art makes for bright adaptation of kids' classic. Review: Brett's recreation of this much adapted, favourite nineteenth century folk-based tale is luminescent. A faithfully reworked text is simple and clear, poetic and great for reading aloud to younger children. While toddlers should enjoy the text and exploits of the "little, small, wee bear", older children and adults will derive much pleasure from this work's seemingly endless visual splendour. The painted illustrations are sublime. Brilliant, clear, richly textured, and exquisitely patterned, this book should be acquired for its artistry alone. One yearn's to reach out and touch the embroidery of the characters' clothing, stroke the bears' bristling fur, feel the porcelain-smooth, bright and beautifully decorated porridge bowls, and rub the wood grain of the handsomely carved house posts and bed boards. Beyond their technical brilliance, each painting richly illustrates the corresponding text and enlivens its characters. In Brett's version Goldilocks is at once angelic and yet completely lacking self restraint, the violated bears are more bemused than belligerent, and baby bear is a curious, playful and frolicking tot. Delightful border art offers additional commentary and foreshadowing, as well as a charming, independent narrative about a family of gardening mice. A must.
Rating: Summary: A wonderfully illustrated version of a timeless classic. Review: I found this wonderful classic inspirational ! That Ms. Brett would go to such INCREDIBLE detail and fine art to tell the story. Even when my children were small - we would study every page EVERY time we read it and linger on the intricacy. Well done!
Rating: Summary: Discovery Review: I have recently been studing the condition Autism and when it came to reading appropriate stories to suit the needs of children with this condition, I had a brainwave and I think that Goldilocks was an autistic child, due to her unsuitable social graces by our standards. It may have been thought to protray Goldilocks as "naughty" for being out on her own and going into the bears house. I think that Goldilocks didn't know she was doing anything out of the way, as children do not tend to go to sleep in strange houses. This would typify the behaviour of some of the children with the condition Autism from my research. I would like to know more about the aurthor of this story and I wonder what his view would have been on my thinking. 3/11/2003 by Eilish O'Hanlon I would like to have this thought registered to the above date and see if any similar thoughts have been recorded on this subject.
Rating: Summary: Skip this one Review: I love Jan Brett's books, but this is not one of my favorites. The wording is tedious to read, and I found myself skipping sentences to avoid it. The illustrations are beautiful, but even my husband agrees...it's just not one of her better books.
Rating: Summary: A modern, humorous spin on a well-known tale of misbehavior Review: Putting a modern, humorous spin on a well-known tale of misbehavior, James Marshall brings new energy to the story of Goldilocks. Although devoid of the moral asides of the original tale, Marshall makes it clear to the audience that they should not follow Goldilock's example. He definitively explains, "Goldilocks was one of those naughty girls who do exactly as they please." Implicitly, his in-depth illustrations expand this characterization. With a smirk of mischief on her face, Goldilocks romps through the bears' house ill-mannerly licking a bowl and putting her feet on a chair. The detailed, colorful illustrations allow readers to step into the bears' home almost as intrusively as Goldilocks has. The reader can see that a postcard from Santa Cruz rests on the mantel and that Papa Bear wears bunny slippers, contributing to this modern version of the story. Upon returning to their invaded home, the bears each respond to Goldilocks' intrusion. "'Somebody has been sitting in my chair!' said Papa Bear. 'Somebody has been sitting in my chair!' said Mama Bear. 'Somebody has been sitting in my chair' said Baby Bear." This use of repetition, common to most versions of the tale, is appealing to listening ears and a welcome sight to struggling readers. In Marshall's adaptation, Baby Bear adds that his chair has been "broken to smithereens". This exemplifies the humorous touches that make the language vivid and fresh for readers (and listeners) of all ages.
Rating: Summary: Goldylocks and the Three Bears Review: The book Goldylocks and the Three Bears was a very good book. The book was about a family of three bears who decided to go on a picnic. There's first a big papa bear, then a medium mama bear, and then there is a little baby bear. Then Goldylocks comes trottying along and Stumbles upon the three bears's home. She sees that no one was in the house so she decides to go right ahead on in. Then she eats the bears food, breaks one of there chairs, and falls asleep in baby bears bed, and of course they catch her. I always loved reading this book for some reason, maybe because it takes place in the blackwoods of Germany. This book is a definate read for all children. No child should go with out three little bears, it's a classic!

Rating: Summary: Original story, well written, with beautiful illustrations. Review: This is the original story, well told. I rate it at 4, versus 5, stars, though, because of the illustrations. Although absolutely beautiful, from an artistic point of view, they are a little complicated, from a child's point of view. For instance, there is an illustration of Goldilocks sitting on Papa Bear's chair, but no illustration of Mama Bear's chair or Goldilocks trying it out. Same for the beds. The main illustrations are framed with smaller illustrations which seem to be referencing all that Goldilocks does, but I bought this book for my two year old (who LOVES it), and I think it would be clearer for him if it had more explicit illustrations.
