Summary: You need this book.
Review: If your child isn't reading on grade level in third grade or older, you need this book. If your child is beyond the picture book age, you need this even more. Hey, it is even great for children or adults learning English as a second language.

Why is it great for older kids and adults? It has fables and other stories which appeal to all ages. Fables were first told to adults centuries ago. Now we think of them as picture books but we need to remember their lessons all of our lives like "united we stand" and other expressions that are part of our language. Also, it is great for older kids and adults because there are no pictures so they don't feel like the book is for little kids. The ages of the characters aren't told. Most of the characters are animals.

What a clever idea to use fables. So often, short stories for kids are kind of pointless. They are barely worth reading, but fables have values which have lasted for centuries! These short stories are well worth reading over and over again.

This is titled "book 3" like for third grade but most teachers teach these words in first grade. I guess they mean that in third grade they should recognize the third grade words and earlier ones instantly, but they should know pre-primer through third grade by the time they finish first grade. That is, if they are going to read well.

Dolch words are words that must be recognized so that kids can become good readers. These words are found in almost every single book but some of them can't be sounded out like "is" sounds like "iz."

"Threw" sounds like "blue." Then you have "on" and "own" and so forth.

Like I said, if I were learning English for the first time, I would want this book and the other two books in this series (books 1 and 2).

This has short delightful stories and fables using the words. It has all of the pre-primer through third grade words without using any words on more complicated levels.

It even has some word searches. The searches only use words which are right side up and they are NOT backward. We don't want kids to read backward so why encourage them to do it in word searches? I'm glad this writer thought of that.

Summary: A Great Book for Beginning Readers
Review: My granddaughter is a beginning reader. I found this book to be a wonderful way for her to learn new words gradually. Once a new word was introduced, it is used throughout the book in other stories. It reminded me of the old Sally, Dick and Jane books that I read in first grade. My granddaughter's favorite story was the one entitled "Under the Can." She squealed with delight when she discovered what was "under the can." The "word find" exercises in the book were fun for my granddaughter also. They were a good way for her to practice finding and reading the new words she had learned in the book.

Summary: Excellent Teaching Tool
Review: This Dolch Work Book #3 includes fascinating stories, poems, fables, and word searches that are based on the Dolch Word List, the most commonly used words for beginning readers. Lesson plans and worksheets are offered on the Learning Abilities web site in conjunction with the book. This Dolch Book, which is the third in a series, is an excellent teaching tool for all children who are learning to read, but in particular, for learning disabled children. In her book Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure, educational expert, Addie Cusimano, devotes an entire chapter on the Right Reading Approach. In it she discusses the importance of using a beginning reader that is based on the Dolch sight list.
