Summary: A WONDERFUL READ
Review: As with all the Dear America books I've read, this story about an orphan girl in Whitechapel chosen to go aboard the Titanic as a companion to a rich American woman is a great read. It is very informative but very real. Margaret's life prior to the Titanic tragedy was already full of sorrow. Orphaned and left to live on the streets with her older brother, she contracts a severe cold and fearing for her life, he leaves her on the steps of an orphanage where she is promptly raised by nuns. Befriended by Sister Catherine, Margaret begins to get out of her shell and is even a little mischevious. She is also quite smart. She leaves it all behind, though, when she is chosen as a companion to a rich American woman who is going on the Titanic to New York City. This is good news for Margaret, as her brother has already been living stateside. She departs, has her requisite tearful goodbyes, and boards the ship. The rest of the diary is full of fascinating details about what it is like to have been aboard the luxury liner. Margaret also feels guilty about being in First Class with many a snob when steerage is where she feels she belongs.
I won't spoil it further by describing what happens that fateful night the ship sinks, but it is full of emotion and takes you aboard in a manner that even the movie, with its special effects, can hardly match.

Summary: Another Great Dear America Book
Review: Due to the extra popularity the Titanic recieved after the movie, this book was written, and it is very good. It's about a thirteen year old orphan named Margaret Ann Brady who is living in an orphanage run by nuns in Whitechapel, London. Sister Catherine, her favorite teacher, gives her a diary to keep track of everything. Wealthy old Mrs. Carstairs is going to America, where she is originally from, but her husband will have to stay in London for some business. He urges her to get a companion, and they end up getting Margaret. Once in America Margaret will live with her older brother William in Boston. Once on the ship she records everything she sees, and the famous people she meets like Colonel Astor and his dog Kitty, and Mrs. Molly Brown. She records first class from the view of someone who has always lived in lower class, so it is extra interesting to her. She writes very long entries, because the diary has the least amount of days than any of the others. But they go by quickly, and are very intriguing. Then of course, as we all know, the ship starts to sink, and Margaret writes it down with a way that really makes you hold your breath and feel for the people. I still think they should of paid more attention to the steerage people in some of the entries, but oh well. There were some things I didn't like in here, but mostly it was pretty good. She also falls in love with the young steward Robert, and she doesn't want to leave the ship until she finds him. Titanic fans will like this, but it's a book for anyone really.

Summary: Heart-rending!
Review: I picked this book up at the library, and since I had forgotten my library card, I hid it very carefully, and got it back later with my mom's card. I'm still not sure if that was such a good idea. I can't get over the book. It was so expertly written and so engrossing, I really couldn't 'put the book down'. I finished it in one day, but the story didn't stop going through and through in my mind.It was the first book I read where I actually cried (when she has to leave Robert, and he kisses her) . I know I sound like an embecile, going on and on. But..............Robert Died! And what makes it so hard to register is that this is a true story. Maybe not the actual person, but the main jist. Titanic was real! In the movie, it was only sad because Leonardo DiCaprio died, but in this book, you actually realize it's not just people falling off the Titanic's rear, when it's bobbing up and down- it's actually souls, people with humor , people with courage, people with feelings, people with love's , with family, people whose whole lives, histories, identities died just as they hit the water. The end. Their dead. Like they were never there before. I advise anyone and everyone to read this book. Everyone. Special comment on the author. She picked her profession when she picked up her pen.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: Margaret Ann Brady is a 13 year old girl living in an orphanage in England. Her brother William left her there when her parents died so she would be taken care of while he was in America. Margaret gets the opportunity of a lifetime when she is chosen to go on the great ship, the Titanic, with a rich American woman named Mrs. Carstairs. She will be a helper, and also a companion to Mrs. Carstairs, and she will finally be able to be with William again, and see America for the first time.

While on the Titanic Margaret meets a young boy, only a few years older than herself, named Robert. She becomes very fond of him, and they become great friends.

Trouble starts one night while sailing in the Titanic. Robert comes running down the hall of the ship and waking everyone up. Supposedly they have hit an iceberg. The woman and children are all put into small boats and taken away. Margaret makes sure that Mrs. Carstairs gets into a boat, but runs off to find Robert. Robert cannot leave the ship on one of the boats because he is a worker and he has to try and save others.

Margaret thinks that all of the boats are gone and that she will die on this boat, but she makes it onto the last boat, and...Well I won't tell you the rest, you'll have to find out for yourself.

This was an excellent book, and it was written incredibly well. I recommend this book to any historical fiction fans, or anyone interested in the Titanic.

Summary: Please mail this letter to my mother....
Review: Margaret Ann Brady is a working class girl who finds herself traveling in first class. My niece Samantha introduced me to this book and as she says: "This is a book anyone can enjoy, adults or children."

The diary starts on March 28, 1912 at the St. Abernathy's Orphanage for Girls in London, England. Margaret's writing is filled with a wonderful English flavor and is very descriptive. This is a secret look into her life as she prepares for her trip and sails away on the Titanic.

While on the Titanic, she has her own private writing desk, so she continues to write about her journey and about Robert, who it seems she came to care for. Perhaps the most poignant scene in this beautifully written diary is the scene in which Robert gives a letter to Margaret to mail to his mother.

When Margaret sees the Titanic she says it was bigger than seemed humanly possible and smelled of fresh paint. She didn't know what to expect, but the sight of the Titanic took her breath away. What seems like just a few pages later, Margaret spills hot chocolate as the ship leaves a smear of red paint at the base of the iceberg.

Through this book you can relive all the emotions Margaret felt as she entered the magical world of traveling on the Titanic. She even says she never wanted to leave and enjoyed reading books from the ship's library. Her story shows courage in contrast with despair. It shows the darkness of the night, tells of the sounds of people crying out for help and then of the rescue on the Carpathia. It is no wonder she never set foot on a another ship again.

This book also includes a time line from 1898 to July 1986. It has pictures of the Titanic and the iceberg.

If you enjoyed this book, look for: "A Journey to the New World," "The Winter of Red Snow," "A Picture of Freedom," "I Thought My Soul would Rise and Fly," "West to a Land Of Plenty."

Summary: A heartbreaking story of Margaret Ann Brady...~By Lisa~
Review: This novel is an exciting and heartbreaking story of a young girl at an orphanage. This story is about her way of meeting Mrs. Carstairs, a rich woman looking for a companion on the new and 'unsinkable' Great Titanic. On her excellent adventure, she becomes friends with her cabin boy, Robert. The most emotional and heartbreaking part of this signifigant novel is when The Titanic begins to sink, leaving Robert sucked down under the ocean's surface, lost forever...

I rate this book 5 stars! It is one of the best books I have ever read! I would deffinatily recommend this book to 10-14 year olds. When I bought this book I also bought "Across The Wide and Lonesome Praire" and "My Heart Is On The Ground", both books about young girls finding change in their lives. Once again I couldn't put it down! I loved it! :)
