Rating: Summary: Simple story, revolutionary subject Review: This is the very simple story of a prince looking for a mate. Instead of a princess, he finds that his true love is another prince. It's as straightforward as that. The text is sweet, playful, and certainly age-appropriate. The illustrations are charming and reflect the flights of fancies of the young Dutch women who created them. There is nothing political about this book; there is no agenda. It is not didactic. Like other revolutionary works of art, it states with clarity, without pretention or any hint of self-consciousness, a perspective that places tradition on its head. The hatred and anger this little book inspires among some is certainly not a product of the book itself, but perhaps only reflects what is already in these readers' hearts. [...]If so, it may reanimate the debate about what they are protecting the children of this school against: a simple story that takes into consideration the not-so-simple ways of the human experience.
