Rating: Summary: A fun story. Review: 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving is a fun story told in a style similar to 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. However, in this story eight children on a school field trip rescue the turkeys Ollie, Stanley, Larry, Moe, Wally, Beaver, Shemp and Groucho from Farmer Mack Nuggett just before they were "...chopped up and roasted for Thanksgiving feasts." Filled with bright, humourous illustrations, this book not only holds a child's attention, it also delivers a wise and caring message. –Reviewed by Glenn Perrett (...)
Rating: Summary: Yeah! A thanksgiving book that doesn't involve killing Review: A holiday that has become focused on the full body and skeleton of a butchered bird is actually quite gruesome when one begins to look at it from the outside, especially as a vegetarian. It's nice to have a book that gives kids an alternative, shows them being proactive, independent problem solvers and guided by empathy and love. An environmentally friendly, great book for all and a very welcome one for vegetarian/vegan families.
Rating: Summary: "Thanksgiving" NOT "Turkey Day" Review: As vegetarians of a 4 year old, we have been looking for books and videos/dvd's on thanksgiving that put' much less focus on eating turkey. We have tried to raise our child as a thoughtful vegetarian. Meaning, we realize we are still very much in the minority and most everyone he knows eats meat. I don't want to program him in such as way where he his openly criticizing people eating meat. This entertaining book also creates thoughtful discussion of why we choose not to eat meat but also realizing most others do. Parts of the book may be a bit inappropriate for younger children as there is a farmer wielding an ax. BUT overall it's a good book with great illustrations.
Rating: Summary: A Hiliarious Night Before Thanksgiving Review: Dav Pilkey's 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving is a wonderfully folksy way to celebrate Thanksgiving. Following in the style of the famous Christmas poem, this book takes us through a class' trip to a turkey farm on the titled night. The poem is updated and tweeked a bit to bring a smile to both adults and children. The pictures add to the festivity and incorporate a little "Starry Night." Get ready for a fun read!
Rating: Summary: Fiction is great fun - enjoy it! Review: I have read many of these reviews and this time I felt the need to respond to some of the negative ones. Dav Pilkey is a very talented author who has a great sense of what kids find funny. I have read this book every year for 7 years to my Kindergarten classes and they absolutely love it. The story begins with the children riding on a bus headed to Mac Nugget's farm. At one point in the story, the children stuff the turkeys under their shirts so they can sneak them home. The kids in my class laugh and laugh at this! NONE of them have EVER had a problem eating turkey meat on Thanksgiving after listening to this story. Have no fears! Kid's know that this is just silly and that the turkeys in this story are cute and have personalities - unlike Thanksgiving dinner turkeys! Children do not look at a cooked turkey and associate that with the cute characters in this story. Don't pay any attention to reviews saying that it took 2 years to get their child to eat turkey meat after they read this book in school. That is ridiculous! As a teacher, I am appalled that people create drama out of nothing. Read this book and laugh at the cute illustrations. Think about how nice it would be if we could have such a cute, colorful turkey to hug and invite over for dinner just like you would a friend. It's called fiction, people! Enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: A Family Tradition Review: I purchased this book many years ago at a school book fair when my kids were very young. They are grown now and to this day we read this book every year before the Thanksgiving Dinner. It is an entertaining and funny book that sets a mood of happiness at Thanksgiving. This is a book that will bring a smile to your face and a chuckle in your heart.
Rating: Summary: Clever and Sweet Review: I read this book each year to my preschool class and they have all enjoyed it. It usually takes more than one reading for them to catch on to what has actually happened. Once they discover the surprise ending, they repeatedly ask for this story.
Rating: Summary: The True Meaning of Thanksgiving Review: I saw this book at my dry cleaners, of all places, and loved it. The lesson that the kids in the story learn - that turkeys are deserving of kindness - is one that we adults can learn also. Having met a few rescued turkeys, I can report that, just as in the book, turkeys have distinct and expressive personalities, and are quite demonstrative at expressing emotions such as delight and consternation. In a non-threatening way, Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving teaches us that the true spirit of Thanksgiving is giving others, including turkeys, something to be thankful for.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Introduction To Theft, Veganism, Eco-Terrorism... Review: If you'd like to introduce a young child to concepts like smug urban elitist disrespect for farmers, theft of property justified by trendy causes, vegetarianism/veganism, and related rationalizations that will give the child an ethical foundation for eco-terrorism e.g. the Earth Liberation Front -- all based on the premise that turkeys are warm, friendly, fuzzy creatures that would make good pets in apartments -- this book would be ideal, especially if your want your child taught by an aging hippie wearing peace-sign earrings.Sorry to be such a curmudgeon, but after being forced to spend half an hour deprogramming my daughter after she brought this book home from the library, I had to warn other parents. If you believe "no child left behind" should be recast as "every child behind the left", it's your choice, and this book will help your cause. If not, this book is a good example of why you should be careful about what your child is reading, even in first grade.
Rating: Summary: heartwarming for the whole family Review: this is a favorite of my family since my children were small. I purchase it as a thanksgiving gift for others. I could read it a million times and never get tired of it. It is an adorable book. It should be a tradition like "The night before Christmas". If you have yourng children, this is a must to read to their class at school!
