Summary: First book I remember choosing at school library
Review: "Yellow Eyes" is the first book that I can remember picking out from my school library, back when I was in 2nd grade at Des Moines Christian School. I remember this distinctly--I had to give them my last name in the library and I did not know how to spell it! Like other reviewers here, I can remember feeling for this cougar as it made its way. It imparted in me a deep respect for nature. To this day, the cougar is my "favorite animal", no doubt largely due to the influence of this tale. I bought a copy for my own son to read.

Summary: Great for any age
Review: I can't have read this book fewer than a hundred times during my childhood, and I still dust it off every year at least. The storyline is great, but the authors descriptive language is what makes this book a classic. You see through yellow eyes into the wilderness he lives in.

Summary: A READ WHICH FORMED MY VIEWS ON WILDLIFE PRESERVATION
Review: I read this book when I was 10 (1961) and remember as if yesterday, the sensation generated in my gut, when the hunting dogs cornered Yellow Eyes, forcing him to make that spine severing leap which crippled the noble beast for the remainder of his life. I believe this single read provided me with the empathy I behold today, for wildlife and their never ending plight with encroching (so-called) civilization. I would highly recommend for any young reader. Just yesterday I was attempting to explain to a good friend and encountered a gaggle of goose bumps and that occasional welling eye. Montgomery instills compassion, respect, appreciation and love of life for all who read this beautifully written story. EN

Summary: Timeless Classic
Review: I read this book when I was a kid and remember it as one of my favorites. Recently I found it in a box of old books at my mother's house and brought it out to read to my kids. They where just as spell bound as I was. It is one of the most successful books at seeing life through the eyes of a wild animal without huminizing the animal. It does harken back to a time when the govermant paid people to kill animals rather then preserve them. That is a little confussing to kids but is a valuable history lesson.

Summary: an excellent page turner for kids...
Review: I read Yellow Eyes many years ago in grade school and it really moved me. Montgomery excels at creating empathy. You really do see through the yellow eyes.

Now that I'm a father, I wanted to read it to my sons, but couldn't find the book. Fortunately, Amazon found a copy for me and I'm currently reading it to my 8 year old at bedtime. This is what has compelled me to write this review. I try to read just one chapter per night, but each night he begs me to keep going! I'm ordering another copy just for him - so he'll be able to read it to his sons.

Incidentally, as I'm re-reading it for the first time in at least 30 years - I realize that it is every bit as good as I remembered it.

I very highly recommend this one.

Summary: Jerry Reviews Yellow Eyes
Review: I too agree with Stan from Lockport and the others who read Yellow Eyes as a kid and never forgot it. I experienced all of the elation, anger, awe, pain, fear, admiration, frustration and excitement when I read it. I remember the native American who used the ink to render Yellow Eye's poisoned meat inpalatable. He was the only friend Yellow Eyes had among the humans, and Yellow Eyes was able to sense this fact and could also sense this man's pure-heartedness and the goodness in his soul. I remember the leap from the tree, and the fight with the airdales (<-sp?)and the attack in the cave back entrance of the man who would kill him. Yellow Eyes chose not to kill that man. Yellow Eyes' life is an incredible journey from the grips of death to starvation to hunger to adulthood to dominance, becoming a legendary force of nature among the humans and animals in his domain.

This is a story that will enchant and delight children of all ages.

Summary: Great book for kids of all ages!
Review: This is a book that I heard about when I was young and never read until just recently. Yellow Eyes is a cougar, and has adventures growing up. I used it as summer reading for my children. We sat together and I read the book to them, chapter by chapter. We then discussed all that we read. Reading this book is truly a moving experience as Yellow Eyes faced many dangers and some unexpected twists and turns. The writing is superb and the story development is excellent. If you are a fan of Avi and Poppy and Rye or Ereth books, this is for you!
