Rating: Summary: I love this book Review: I don't normally read children's books, but this one is wonderful! The story and writing are very moving, the illustrations are beautiful. And the message!!!!! The message is wonderful, about dropping the walls that separate us from the natural world, inviting nature into our lives. I cannot recommend this book too highly.
Rating: Summary: Gets a child to think about basic needs of live creatures! Review: I love how the mother and child in this story interact. When the child wants to keep the salamander he found, the mother (instead of saying "no" or lecturing him about why we don't take creatures out of their natural habitat) asks him questions that require the child to think about what the salamander needs to sleep, eat, play and more. Step by step the boy imagines how he could meet the salamander's needs, yet still keep it in his room, which is now quickly turning into a woodland paradise for his new friend. This is a wonderful story for all children - especially for the ones who desire to bring home live "treasures" from nature to keep in their room!

Rating: Summary: Hopefully it'll get me into college... Review: I love this book! It is currently the subject of one of my college application essays. This book is not only about the needs of animals and bringing all of us closer to nature; it's about existentialism and not letting arbitrary rules of society dominate your life. It's not strange that Brian wants to tear off the roof: it's the most natural thing in the world! If you want your kids to grow up to be free thinkers, read this book to them over and over. I'm sure it will become their favorite, just as it is mine.
Rating: Summary: A Salamanders Home Review: In this amazing book for children a young boy named Brian is exploring in a forest and finds a little salamander and takes it home. His mother is worried and keeps asking him how he is going to take care of this extraordinary creature. Well his mother comes up with more and more questions, while Brian keeps coming up with more and more answers. As the story progresses Brian's bedroom begins to change, and the more questions he answers, the more his bedroom changes. Near the end you begin to see what his bedroom is changing into. At the end of the story his bedroom is filled with a multitude of animals and his room is now a forest but he and his salamander friend are happy and tired and they fall asleep. This interesting book was written by: Anne Mazer and illustrated by Steve Johnson.
Rating: Summary: You Just Can't Take It Home With You Review: The Salamander Room takes an empathetic approach to every child's desire -- and every wild animal's fear! While Brian's mother provides a creative (and imaginary) response to the age-old question, "Mommy, can I take it home?!", the real answer becomes clear by the end of this delightful story. Mazer's text and Johnson's beautiful illustrations transform Brian's room into a forest, with all of the needs of a salamader's world. Brian learns (along with the reader) that the salamander is, indeed, already home
Rating: Summary: Well Worth the Buy Review: This beautifully illustrated book brings to pictures how a small child's mind works. 'Of course a salamander will be comfortable in my room, I'll just... ' This book is a very enjoyable read with any young child (I'd say up to 8 or so easily). The illustrations remind me of a dream--or being a child and figuring out the logistics of a similar situation. If you have a little herpetologist in your life, this book is a winner. If you have no idea that a herpetologist is one who studies reptiles and amphibians, no matter. It is still a beautiful children's book about what unlimited imagination can do.
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: This gentle story about a boy's desire to make his room a good home for a salamander is one of our family's favorites. The boy's imagination runs wild as he creates the perfect environment for the salamander - and for himself, as well. This book makes a great bedtime story for parents and children alike.
