Summary: Where the Lilies Bloom
Review: I read this book the first time when I was a child. I remember seeing the movie and being fascinated by the life of the mountain people - so far removed from my suburban life. The struggles, bravery and ingenuity of the Luther kids is amazing and touching. I think this book is geared to young teens, but I don't think it can be appreciated by most of that age. It is so sad to read the many reviews from the 12 and 13 year old kids here who "hate it" and who suggest books of the likes of Harry Potter instead. Perhaps once they have expanded their intellect somewhat they might be able to appreciate and understand it's beauty and brilliance.

Summary: Pretty interesting but sort of boring.*by Katie in 8th grade
Review: I read Where the Lilies Bloom for a book report at school. At first the book was pretty interesting, but towards the end it started to get slow and I had a pretty hard time trying to finsih it. However, I think it would be an interesting book to read if you want to read about people living in the mountains. It also gives some good facts about the plant life in the Smokey Mt. But, I think if you want to read adventure books or fantasies, this would probably not be the perfect choice to read.

Summary: Boring, Stupid & Slow!
Review: I thought Where The Lilies Bloom was one of the worst books I have ever read. I am 13 and in 8th grade and I had to read this book for summer reading. I thought it was boring, stupid and very slow. I would definately NOT recommend this book to anyone! The whole book is about how Mary Call lies about her dead father. It was AWFUL!

So now, Mary call has a huge burdone to carry out... and enough probles she can handle, esspecially when her father makes her promise to him to keep kiser peas, who wants to marry Devola, away. If you ever get bored or need a book to read, you should get this one.

Summary: This Book Was Fairly Good.
Review: Readers who will like this book will tend to be above average in intellect, ability to empathise and moral reasoning ability. It presents an alien culture diametrically opposed to our present morally impoverished, materially cluttered one then proceeds to endow its characters and superficially simple plot with incredibly complex ambiguities and endless reflections of the mind of its reader. Its pastoral setting positively seethes with psychic tension, laughably inaccessible to the reader who might be suboptimal in any of the three key attributes listed above.

This book is as close as Western literature gets to a Zen koen. It asks questions about the reader which take years, maybe decades to answer.

While its target is the early teen academic market it is clearly wasted on the average student. Thank God that some schools still formulate a goal of challenging the best of our future minds! Someone still has to learn how to read real literature lest we end this next century watching Bradbury's firemen on the boob tube.

Summary: A touching and dramatic story about a family's trials.
Review: There are many books that describe hard, mountain life in the Appalachain region, but above all,Where The Lilies Bloom, is a definate favorite of mine! The reason why I like this book is because it's so down-to-earth and realistic. To me, I think everyone should read this book because it shows real family strength during many situations which seemed inescapable. Some things about the book that I liked were the way Mary Call showed strength, bravery, and dedication in keeping the promises she made to her "papa", Roy Luther Call, and the authors' description of life in the Appalachain region. I like those features because throughout the whole book, those two remained constant. Even though Roy Luther's death brought on a variety of problems, Mary Call bore them all without showing signs of fatigue or despair. She always tried to think each situation through and keep it all under wraps. When a situation was formed. I liked the authors' description because they were so vivid and life-like, it seemed to me like I was eavesdropping on the Luther family problems the whole time I was reading about them. However good I thought the book was in general, there were a few parts I didn't like as much as others. For example, I think that at the part where the roof caved in, the fox should not have been there. I feel as if the fox drew too much attention to itself, and not the problem at hand. If the fox had not been added, I think the part would have went smoother. As a whole, I think the book, Where The Lilies Bloom, os a classic that should and probably will be handed down through the generations! I give it two thumbs way, way up!

Summary: Lu He P.3
Review: This book is about a girl named Mary call and her papa died. She promised him that she will take care of Devola, Romey, and Ima Dean. She also promised that they will not trust anyone and not to let Devola marry Kiser. They got weeds and other plants to Mr.Connell(a store keeper), so they could make money. They kept a secrete that their papa died. They told everyone that their papa is not home or he is sleeping. Later on, Mery Call realized that people o change and Devola really love Kiser and Kiser feel the same way, so they got married. Kiser gave Mary Call his car to drive with for awhile, a pig, and a radio. He took care of the family.

I don't really like this book because it was boring. Also because this is like a typical story. I am more iterested in fantasy, and wierd books but not scary books. I kid of like this book too because I like the way how Mary Call took care of the family on her own. She was only fourteen and she has to take care of 3 children.

The reason that I chose this book is because of its cover. The first reason because the cover is new. I enjoy books that have new covers. The second reason is because the picture on the cover was interesting. It was a picture of a girl holding a baskets of plants and behind her were mountains. The background scene was colorful and pretty.

Summary: Where the Lilies Bloom
Review: Where the Lilies Bloom is an excellent book. Our school used it as a book of the month when we studied the character trait of responsibility. It is about a young girl with total responsibility for her family after her father has died. She must also keep the secret of her father's death from all of the neighbors. Mary Call accepts this responsibility and goes on to try and take of here siblings by any means she can. She gathers roots and leaves to provide an income for her family. She keeps her head up and believes she should ask no one for assistance. Our students enjoyed it and I hope you will find it to be a good book also.

Summary: Pretty interesting but sort of boring.*by Katie in 8th grade
Review: Where the Lilies Bloom was a story set in a rural mountain community. Two stars are left out of my rating because I felt it was very shallow at times. Some things struck me as unrealistic. For an example, in the beginning of the book, the protagonist's sister, Devola, was portrayed as a girl with nothing to her. The protagonist, Mary Call, was four years younger than Devola, but Devola was irresponsible and had her head in the clouds. However, at the end of the book, Devola suddenly underwent an immense change, took charge, and became clearheaded.

Despite the book's shortcomings, three stars are merited because I really admired Mary Call's determination and spirit and the way she never gave up. She was not afraid to stand up for herself or for her family. If I had read this book two years ago, I think I would have liked it much more.
