Summary: Freight Train
Review: A Caldecott Honor Book, Freight Train/Tren De Carga is a bilingual English/Spanish picture book written by Donald Cres and enhanced with his starkly minimalist yet impressive color illustrations. Very simple phrases showing the inevitable journey of a freight train make Freight Train/Tren De Carga a very highly recommended "read-aloud story" to share with the very young just beginning to grasp their first words in both languages.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Freight Train is a wonderful book to teach children colors.
Review: Freight Train teaches children about colors and the names of train cars. The book also has a distinct beginning, middle and end which helps the children to identify story parts. The pictures of the train moving look realistic, which makes the Caldecott Honor award well deserved.

Summary: an absolute favorite
Review: I bought this book on a lark (based on a list published on this site and since my Grandpa was a train lover, I thought I'd give it a try.) What a stroke of luck. My 15 month old son has had this book read to him since he was 6 weeks old and he just loves it. It mesmerized him as much today as it did when he first read it. He is choosing the books we read to him now and this one is never refused. He now even says "gone" when the last page is turned. I'd say out of his lexicon of 20 or so words that he is using with confidence, "go", "gone", and "train" are a direct result of this book.

The illustrations are simple but enticing and the board book is very sturdy (but unfortunately not drool-proof, I am ordering another copy today because the first has become a casualty of the drooling caused by my son's teething.) Like many board books, this is just the right size for little hands to manipulate readily. I plan to put up a year one list and you can bet this book will easily be at the top.

Summary: Quick fun paced book
Review: I got this book for my 3 year old and probably should have gotten it sooner for more use. He does enjoy it. The train seems to rush by, the pictures are very simple (not cluttered) and give the impression of movement. He enjoys telling me the colors and the types of cars there are. I can't get away with just telling it once. For my son who loves trains, this is a fun book for us. I would get it again.

Summary: Choo Choo Boogaloo. A classic for your bookshelf!
Review: My son's first word was "car". The word "train" was not far behind. He loves this book. He has learned the types of train cars and colors from reading this simple and elegant book (board book version). It is a must have for all children who love trains. Mr. Crew's book truck is terrific but nowhere near as colorful and as filled with speed as this book. Highly recommended!

Summary: A great starter book
Review: My three year old nephew loves "Freight Train"--it's simple enough that he can "read" it--he's learned the names of the different cars and it reinforces color recognition. The illustrations are big and bold and colorful. A winner!

Summary: A must-have for little train lovers
Review: Simple text describes 4 different types of freight cars, the caboose, the tender and the steam engine. The six basic colors plus black are used for each car and therefore this is an ideal way to teach colors to the little train-lover. Very fast read and my son pleads me to read it again. I don't mind, as this is not aggravating in any way (as some of the board books are). Sturdy board book construction. Great book!

Summary: Simple book for young train lovers
Review: This book is a fun look at a freight train as it passes by. The book points out each of the elements of the train, naming the cars and the tender. Then it mentions some of the things that the train passes, and whoosh, before you know it, it is gone. It contains lots of good train vocabulary and pictures, but no plot to speak of. It is a short book, with only about 100 words- -good for kids with short attention spans.

Summary: PERFECT
Review: This book is the greatest children's book ever created - it was always my favourite. Simple and elegant images tell the story of the freight train. Highly recommended!

Summary: Sure to be a favorite!
Review: This has been my son's (23 months old) FAVORITE book for 6+months! He loves it. We read it every night & several times throughout the day. He "reads" it by himself quite often too. We travel frequently and this is the one book that must always go with us.

The illustrations are wonderful. I highly recommend this book. It is now my favorite gift to give.
