Summary: A Lesson Sometimes Missed
Review: As a middle school social studies teacher, I was given the challenge to teach a lesson using a picture book. During my search for the perfect history related picture book, I came across this book instead. The lesson I found in it was one perfect for the first day of class. While the synopsis tells the story of a boy who does not want to get up, I feel it is the last two pages that are most important. In these pages, since the boy will not get out of bed, the mother gives his breakfast to someone else. The lesson I pass on to my students is that I will do everything in my power to help them learn. I will bring in marching bands if that will help, but I can not force them. They must get up and reach for what they want (ie do homework and study) or someone else will get the reward (an A). Please buy this book for your children (young and old) with the lesson that they have the option of being lazy, but they just might miss out on something they want or need.

Summary: Bed First!
Review: Do you know any children who like to get up early to go to school? Well, we haven't had one yet in our family. So each morning is quite a challenge.

I Am Not Going to Get Up Today! is comic relief for those moments.

Let me explain. The book begins with this refrain by a small boy with a dog lying under his bed.

"Please let me be,

Please go away,

I am not going to get up today!"

In the course of the story, the boy resists the alarm, peeping birds, other kids getting up, his mother bringing in an egg for breakfast, noise of siblings, tickling his feet, shaking his bed, pouring cold water on his head, talking by the neighbors, noise by neighbors, sweets, dogs, roosters, goats, geese, the police, publicity in the newspaper, the Marines, and a television crew.

He still wants to "lie here woozy-snoozing."

In the end, his mother brings in a policeman and says:

"I guess he really means it.

So you can have the egg."

Have you ever been that tired? I hope not.

The book is designed to get lots of great laughs from your child and sympathetic smiles from you as you read the book together.

How can it help in the morning? You can do a play based on the book. You can walk in grandly with an egg cup on a tray, and ask whether you should give the egg to the policeman. You can get a tape of a marching band to play. In any event, your fun with this story will turn snoozy mornings into laugh-filled events. And laughter is an excellent antidote to lethargy.

I also suggest that you ask your child what the mother should have done. This will be all the clue you need to find out how your child would most like to be awakened.

Time to rise and shine!

Summary: OK, Now you are about to hear a confession . . .
Review: I am a confirmed Dr Seuss hater. My tongue gets twisted, the words cannot come, his rhymes are annoying, I don't think they're fun. OOOPS! Seriously, as one who actually dreaded having my toddlers drag their favorite Dr Seuss tomes behind them, and promising a book burning if I had to read GREEN EGGS AND HAM one more time, I have to admit . . . I LOVED THIS BOOK. How many of us cannot identify with the main cahracter who simply is NOT going to get up today? The rhymes may be a bit much (remember I am not a huge Dr Seuss fan) but rather than imaginary worlds filled with strange looking thingies, this is a REAL little boy who is just too warm and toasty to get up! And so, his family, friends and entire TOWN endeavor to get him out of bed. There is a fun repetitiveness, which encourages the kiddies to sing-song along with the chorus "I AM NOT GOING TO GET UP TODAY," and a playfulness in the illustrations that suggests that they are geared for the grown ups to be entertained by. And finally, when the Mom at the end announces, "HE'S NOT GOING TO GET UP," we feel that we are entitled to share in his victory. Not even the UNITED STATES MARINES could get him out of bed!

A fun book to read again and again!

Summary: I am not going to get up today
Review: I am not going to get up today is an exciting, silly story. It is about a boy who doesn't want to get up for school, and he swears that nothing in your wildest imagination will get him up. Seuss, the author, has some crazy ideas as to what would normally wake people up, but in this case, nothing will make this imaginative child get out of bed.

Summary: Dr. Seuss hits rock bottom
Review: My wife and I finally stored this book away, because there is nothing redeeming about the message, and it's not particularly creative in any respect either. The book dwells on a boy's obstinance/refusal to get out of bed for an entire day...what a wonderful thought to put in the head of our children. The kid refuses entreaties from his mother and even the police to get out of bed and go to school, and in the end, they just let the kid stay in bed and sleep. So...the message for my 2 year old is: defy your parents long enough, engage in anti-social behavior, and they will give in and let you have your way. I still have to wonder whether Dr. Seuss actually wrote this one. It's just horrid, and the rhymes are like a 6th grader's first attempt at poetry. Blech!

Summary: I am not going to get up today
Review: There's got to be a starting point to reading with your child and this should be the place. All my kids loved this book, it has humor they instantly identify with and are always entertained by. They never get bored with this one.

Summary: Sleepy Head Central
Review: This book is great. I have a child who hates mornings; this quickly became a favorite. We can all relate to how this cild feels about mornings at one time or another. I found it helpful in getting my child up in the mornings, he would say one verse, and then I'd say the next; and so on. Soon he'd be wide awake and giggling; it sure beat nagging.

Summary: Book Review
Review: This book uses very good discriptions, it also rymes and the illistrations go along with the the words good. It makes you keep reading and reading because the words are discriptive. I would suggest this book to all kids.
