Rating: Summary: Best hair book ever!!!! Review: I bought this book to find a style I could wear my hair up while growing it out. This book is full of stylish, elegant, modern, romantic, beautiful easy easy easy to do hair do's. I bought other books on braids but this book covers every 'do' I could possibly want to do. I am amazed at how easy almost all of these styles are to execute..... they look so complicated when done, but are soooo easy to do. I was skeptical that I would use/like the scrunchies when I ordered, but they are actually very nice and I immediately used one to try one of the styles called the Gibson Tuck and it works perfectly (page 23).
Rating: Summary: Good Book for Teens and Older Review: I enjoyed learning to do the styles in this book, and the simple, straightforward instructions help anyone trying to learn a new style. I also like the organization of the book- how it starts out with basic styles, and then moves on to harder ones. Some of the styles might be too difficult for younger kids, but most of them are relatively easy for the older set to learn. (Note: If you have younger kids that are interested in this book, I would recommend "Braids and Bows", also by Anne Akers Johnson, because it has styles that are a bit easier to do.)
Rating: Summary: Great guide for they styling challenged Review: I just got this book for my birthday (after I put it on my Amazon Wish List). I paged through it and am impressed both with the fantastic, illustrated, step-by-step instructions and wonderful variety of styles. They are all ones I could see wearing, none too juvenile or funky. Most will be great for work and a couple will look stunning for a special occasion. The illustrations helped me finally visualize the motions needed to do a french braid (which baffled me my whole life).
The book includes three very high-quality scrunchies (one made of beads on elastric cord) and a nice box for whatnots. Unfortunately, they come attached to the bottom of the book which gives the book an awkward shape. My husband and I are going to try to fix it with a dremel.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book on braiding and hair styling! Review: I never was able to French-braid my hair and had despaired of ever being able to learn until I got this book. It gives clear, concise, step-by-step instructions not only on how to make the braid (and many other styles) but where exactly to place your hands while doing it. The more complicated styles have two sets of instructions: a short one for those who are more experienced at hairstyling, and another that breaks it down into easy steps that even a klutz (like me) can follow. It also provides numerous hints and tips on general hairstyling, and tells what types of hair work best with each style. Since I got this book, I've been trying a new style from it every day, and have gotten many compliments from co-workers. There are special-occasion styles as well as everyday ones. The book is geared towards adults, unlike many of the other similar ones I've seen which are aimed more at little girls. Take it from a klutz -- if you've been trying unsuccessfully to learn to French-braid or trying to find a new look, this book is a must-have!
Rating: Summary: This book is well written yet entertaining to look through. Review: I ordered this book for a friend of mine who has lots of beautiful hair. Upon looking through it I knew that it was the right book for her. It has great pictures of the hairstyles presented and also gives detailed step-by-step instructions (with illustrations) on how to implement them. It is wire bound so it will stay open to any page without the assitance of paper weights or hands while styling. The styles presented are classy as well as sexy and can be used on many different types of hair. The book contains about 19 different twists and rolls and 12 different braids. Overall the book is an excellent presentation of what I was looking for and is easily understood. The only drawback may be that the quantity of braids and styles is limited. Possibly, the most defining factor for me is that I would buy it again for another friend.
Rating: Summary: A very nice book Review: I really like this book! I had never seen a good book about hair styles before I found this on Amazon. It has a lots of nice hair styles and I've finally learned how to do a french braid on myself, and lots of other nice styles. My younger sisters borrowed this from me, and also found some good ideas for their hair. A nice gift for yourself or a friend! Nice illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions, I've never seen so good step-by-step instructions for making nice braids and styles. The only complaint I have is that the book is made to hold a box on the bottom - that doesn't even stick! and that makes it impossible to put in the book shelf, so the first thing I did was to cut it of with a pair of scissors. It would have been nice with a few more hair styles, you just want more and more...
Rating: Summary: Everyone I know who has this book Loves it Review: I've had this book since about June 2000. I learned to braid with it.
First the book has a spiral binding. This means the book will lay flat so you don't have to hold it open. That means you have both hands to work on your hair.
Second: everyone I know who has used this book to learn found it helpful. It's excellent for beginners. Now there aren't a lot of the harder styles in the book so if you already know a lot of styles you might not need this book.
Third: the book has not only about 15 braids but also about 15 other styles.
Fourth: even though the book uses illustrations, they are done so well that they look lifelike.
Fifth: they do show pictures of the styles on real people and they are beautiful.
I'd just like to sum up by saying that this book was made the way this kind of book should be. They put some thinking into it and made it user friendly. Then they included some scrunchies and a storage box. That's kinda like getting batteries included.
I'll close with a tip, if you are going to buy this from a store please be sure to look in the children's section if you can't find it elsewhere. Most Klutz books are for kids so they tend to put this with them. I found mine in the children's section. Thank you for your time and I hope this helps.
Rating: Summary: Best Book of Braids and Updos! Review: Part of the Klutz series of books and originally intended for older children and young teens, Hair has gained a following among long-haired women of all ages because it is simply the best book out there for attractive long hair styles. When I grew my hair out after many years of wearing it short, I went looking for a nice book of hairstyles for long hair. I looked everywhere I could think of with little success -until I found Hair in a bookstore's children's section. Don't be put off by the Klutz label or the fact that there is a box of ugly hair accessories physically attached to this book. It provides excellent illustrations and easy-to-understand directions for 32 hairstyles, by my count. The styles are for medium length to long hair. Some styles would be better suited for thinner hair and some for thick. The illustrations and directions are given for doing the hairstyles on yourself, not on someone else. If you are doing someone else's hair, some adjustment can be made. Covered in the book are various types of twists and rolls, tucks and buns, braids, French braids, inverse French braids (cornrows), herringbones, and ropes. There are casual styles, styles suited to work, and many that could be quite formal. Page layouts are attractive and well-designed. The book is spiral-bound so it will lie flat while you are fiddling with your hair. Highly recommended for long-haired girls and women, ages about 10 and up. Makes a great gift! There is a cardboard protrusion on the bottom of this book to which the box of accessories is adhered. This prevents the book from being stood up on a book shelf. You can cut it off with a razor blade and a ruler. Then your book will sit perfectly on your shelf.
Rating: Summary: not good for younger gals Review: The hairstyles portrayed in this book have a mature look, and aren't very urban (hence, the scrunchies). In my opinion, not ideal for younger women looking for more simple, updated looks.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: This book is filled with tons of beautiful, easy-to-do hairstyles. Even if you've never done a basic braid in your life, the step-by-step instructions and clear drawings will show you how to do a wide variety of styles, from the simple basic braid up to the mega-challenging French rope. The book features about 50 cool styles, for all lengths and types of hair, and all occasions, from casual to formal. The book is geared toward teens and young adults, but even people older or younger will probably enjoy trying out the styles in this book. As an added bonus, the book comes with 3 beautiful scrunchies, and is spiral-bound so you can lay it flat while doing the styles in this book. The instructions are so detailed that complicated styles like the herringbone, french braids, and the french rope feature seperate pages showing you even how to position your hands while doing the style! This book is the perfect guide for anyone who enjoys trying out new styles on their hair, even if they're not hairstyling experts. Highly recommended! (For a book with styles for younger children, I would recommend reading "Braids and Bows", also written by Anne Akers Johnson)
