Summary: Everything on a Waffle
Review: -I read the book Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath. I give this book a 4 star rating.
-Everything on a Waffle is a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor book. This book earned a 4 star rating because I think it is unique. After each chapter you read there is a recipe. Some of the recipes are very inventive like how to make Pear Soup or Cherry Pie Pork Chops. Other recipes are plain for example how to make Perfectly Boiled Potatoes. The recipes have meaning to the main character, Primrose, because they were recipes from her mother who was lost at sea. A weird part of this story is at Miss Bowzer's restaurant called, The Girl on the Red Swing, where everything including lasagna comes on a waffle. (That's how the book got its name)
-The reason I didn't give this ALA Notable book a 5 star rating is because of the ending. The ending was boring. By this I mean, it ends how every fairy tell ends. There wasn't any twist or turns in the book. If you like those happy endings that aren't really realistic and you know what is going to happen, then this is the book to read. I personally like suspense in my books. This is why I gave Everything on a Waffle a 4 star rating.
-Other titles I would recommend is Go for the Goal by Mia Hamm, Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young Girl, and Another favorite of mine is A Circle of Time.

Summary: A good book on a waffle.
Review: A GOOD BOOK ON A WAFFLE.

Primrose Squarp is an amusing, funny eleven year-old girl who is very lost and unsure of her self after she becomes an orphan. Her parents are lost at sea and everyone thinks they are dead, but Primrose thinks they are still alive stranded or lost on an island somewhere. She waits on the dock every night for them to come back.
Since her parents are lost Primrose goes to live with her Uncle Jack who is in the Navy stationed in Coal Harbor, but he is not the best guardian for her, he is not around a lot so Primrose is often lonely.
Primrose loves the town restaurant, " The girl on the red swing." (That's where they sell everything on a waffle, fish on a waffle even waffles on waffles) She gets along very well with the owner Kate Bowzer, she teachers her how to cook and takes her in and makes her feel well again and befriends her. Although she does like Kate she doesn't care for Miss Honeycut her counselor, she is too caught up in her own world to care about anyone else but herself (which is odd to Primrose because at this time in her life she needs someone to talk to) and her babysitter Miss Perfidy also tends to get on Primrose's nerves.

Over all I enjoyed this book I think in a way it teaches you to be able to handle anything that comes at you and to be strong and patient. I also thought it was enjoyable how they had little recipes throughout the book. It made the book different and unique.

Summary: Parents Gone and Trouble Comes.....
Review: Everything on a Waffle is an interesting and engrossing realistic fiction book by Polly Horvath, the author of The Trolls. Primrose Squarp is the main character. She is a type of person that does not care what other people say; she will always believe what she believes. Coal Harbor, B.C. Canada is the setting of Everything on a Waffle. Don't be surprised about the cars in this book because it is modern times!
Awful things are about to happen to Primrose, will she manage? One stormy day Mr. Squarp and Mrs. Squarp are lost at sea in the thundering storm. An old lady called Ms. Perfidy's house turns into Primrose's new home. Ms. Perfidy is a stubborn selfish old lady charging $5 per hour day and night. Primrose's uncle, Uncle Jack, was willing to let her live with him for free. Primrose meets many unfortunate things but stays tough. If you want examples of the unfortunate things here are some of them; she loses all her sweaters, sets fire to a guinea pig called Herman, and loses a toe... The solution if her parents are alive, is what you need to find out yourself.
I am recommending this book to others because this book tells you what having no parents and being singled out feels like. It would be a good interesting book for realistic fiction fans. No matter what type of reader you are it would be exciting, guessing what is going to happen to Primrose next. At last I should tell you that if you like waffles, read Everything on a Waffle!

Summary: Funny and Emotional
Review: Everything on a Waffle, a Newbery Honor winning book, captures your attention as the main character Primrose Squarp captures your heart. The setting takes place in British Columbia with the plot of the story moving along at a good pace keeping the attention of the reader.
Mr. Squarp, Primrose's father is a fisherman and is out at sea when a typhoon occurs. Her mother, worried, decides to go out on the water to search for her husband. They both are missing! Primrose an eleven-year-old girl experiences hard times after both her parents are lost at sea. Throughout the story, she must live with several different people including an uncle. Primrose also becomes great friends with a restaurant owner who serves everything on a waffle.
Through good characterization, the author Polly Horvath allows the reader to understand the characters. The book demonstrates through these characters how everyone needs friends. Here a young girl and her adult friend show kindness, trust, and compassion for each other. Primrose also begins a relationship with an older couple that becomes her foster parents, once again demonstrating warmth and love between these characters. Not only do these adults influence Primrose's life, but she impacts their lives as well.
The readers will find themselves experiencing many emotions throughout this book. One will feel compassion for Primrose as she longs for her parents and her old life and then quickly burst out laughing at some of the comical situations in which Primrose finds herself. Situations such as almost baking the class pet and actually losing a couple of body parts! I enjoyed the character because she is likeable, vulnerable, comical, and has a good heart.
I think most children around grades 4, 5, and 6 will enjoy this book because of both the trials and comedy the characters experience. This book would be a good book to read aloud or together. It would be an asset when teaching children about friendship, grieving, determination and believing in something.

Summary: Everything Served on a WAFFLE?
Review: If you are looking for an interesting, funny, realistic fiction book, Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath is a PERFECT book for you!
The story takes place in modern times in Coal Harbor, British Columbia, Canada.
The main character is an eleven-year-old girl called Primrose Squarp. She is helpful, thoughtful, and persistent all the time, because she never gives up thinking that her parents aren't dead when her parents were lost at the sea.
One June day, Primrose's parents were lost at the sea because of the large storm. Everyday she went down to the docks to watch the boats come in. Primrose knew that her parents were alive and waiting for someone to rescue them on an island somewhere, even though everyone in her town thought that they were dead.
For a while Primrose lived with Miss Perfidy who smelled like a mothball, but Uncle Jack came to take care of Primrose. He was a gentle and cheery man and she enjoyed the life with him but some problems happen. After that she was sent to the foster parents, Evie and Bert. She met many warmhearted people but she experienced many troublesome events. She lost her baby toe by bumping into the truck and the tip of her ring finger by getting stuck in a net, and also lost all of her sweaters her mom knit. However, she always thought positively about everything. Primrose often went to her favorite restaurant, "The Girl on the Red Swing." It was Miss. Bowzer's, and there everything was served on a waffle! She was very friendly to Primrose and taught her some cooking. She always helped her and understood her.
One day Primrose went to that restaurant with Uncle Jack, Evie and Bert. While they were eating, they heard someone scream, "Fire!" Where? The townhouses Uncle Jack had sold were on fire. Everything was burning. Almost everyone was rescued but someone was in yet, so Uncle Jack went into the fire to help. One who helped out was Miss Honeycut. Uncle Jack had to stay in the hospital because of injured, though he was fine. Miss Perfidy died in a few days before he got out of the hospital, because she was very old and sick.
The week before Christmas, Uncle Jack got out of the hospital. Primrose and he took walks on the beach. At that time, what do you think happened? Unbelievable!
I would recommend this book, because in this book there were many events going on at a time and there were many big problems! I guess there was at least one bit of trouble in each chapter! I decided to stop reading at next chapter once but I couldn't, because there were many troubles going on! There were several kinds of characters. At some parts author talks about different kinds of characters together, so the story gets funnier and funnier! For the star rating, I would give five stars! Now, you want to read this book! Right? To find out what did happen at the end, read this book right now! I love this book, and so I think you will too!
