Summary: Great Projects & Easy to Follow
Review: I bought this book to teach myself how to knit. After a couple practice squares, I've spent the past couple months working on my first patchwork afghan.

This book is very easy to follow. As someone in there mid 20s, I felt bad that I did not have someone in my life growing up that knew how to knit. Many children's books on the market are great because they are easy to read and they have colorful pictures. When I read so many good reviews about this book, I knew I should giving knitting a try!

Although I felt silly buying a book for kids, I have to admit that this is one of the best instruction books I own. I highly recommend it for anyone learning how to knit on their own!

Summary: Great for grownups, too!
Review: I fall into the category of kids of "all ages." I'm an adult who wanted to take up knitting as a hobby, with hopes of making a few holiday presents along the way, too. This book taught me the basics and gave me some great ideas for projects. I was able to take the ideas given here and go off on my own... as well as read more advanced knitting patterns. This is a great starter book for anyone who wants to learn to knit!

Summary: Not only is this book good, it's not just for kids!
Review: I purchased this book for my 7 year old son because he wanted to learn to knit with "two needles". He is an accomplished finger knitter! The "two needle" technique proved too difficult for him at this time, but having always wanted to learn knitting myself, I decided to give it a whirl. Finally someone has written a book on how to knit that even I can follow. The projects in the book make great gifts, especially if you have appeciative kids or young friends. When I progressed to making a sample of various stitches I did need the hands on advise of an experienced knitter to guide me through the instructions but more to boost my confidence that I wasn't missing something. The instructions and illustrations throughout the book are very readable and a lot of fun. The book also concludes with a great, comprehensive glossary of common abbreviations used in commercial knitting instructions.

Summary: This is a great gift book for kids AND adults!
Review: I've been knitting for 40+ years and I bought this book for my personal collection. It has very clear directions, colorful photos and illustrations, and is ideal for teaching children AND adults to knit. The projects are fun and interesting to make. I had only one small problem with one of the methods the author used but, overall, I think this a great book. Put this book in a package with some needles and yarn and you've got a great gift for any kid on your list. But be sure the recipient has someone to help him/her if they have questions. Oh yes, I like the fact that they show BOYS knitting!! Good for them!

Summary: Decent for adults but terrible for children
Review: Okay, maybe terrible is too harsh a word to use. Despite having tons of pictures of little kids knitting here and there, I don't think actual children could do many of the projects without adult guidance. That said, here is the rundown on the good points and bad points. Being an optimist, I'll start with the good points:

1. The projects, though some of them are difficult, are also dang cute.
2. The illustrations are very colorful and big.

The bad points:
1. This is a book for kids, yet the patterns call for yarns that are more expensive and require hand washing! There isn't a section on how to find substitute yarns either.
2. One pattern that is especially adorable is the small backpack. The directions call for using circular needles so one would assume that you are knitting in the round. But that is not so! You're supposed to knit it flat, but no where in the directions does it specify that.

Now, I am not a child so I guess it is overly presumptous of me to claim this book is terrible for children. I am, however, a teacher who works with fourth graders. Also, I am a knitter who, for some odd reason, likes to knit lots of hats and mittens. (I'm not a sweater buff) I figured if I had a hard time deciphering some of the directions, than a child would also have a difficult time.

Though I tell you, some of the patterns are dang cute.

Summary: a good book
Review: This book is adorable and well done- great knitting projects as well as projects knitting related (making your own knitting bag and knitting needles)
However, this books should be used with an adult who knits-the instructions are too complex and not in detail enough for many children to learn to knit just by reading it. Giving this book to a friends child (age 7) only frustrated her, especially when the illustrations show children that appear to be 4 or 5 knitting their own sweaters. I felt awful, of course, becasue the book worked out so well when I taught my own 8 year old to knit.
If you are going to give this book to a child, give them a few knitting lessons first. If your own child wants to knit and you do not, find someone who can show them-it will be the least stressful way for them to learn. This book is excellent for children and adults who know how to knit and want some fun, funky projects to make, but don't use it as an end all resource.

Summary: Best Instruction Book I've ever read
Review: This is a beautifully illustrated instruction book for beginners of all ages. The author wrote a simple poem for kids to say as they learn to knit. The poem was a real hit with my 8 year old who learned easily because of the poem.

The best part of this text are the pictures of children of both genders having fun with knitting projects. For anyone with young ones learning the craft of knitting, the instructions for all the projects are simple, creative, and easy to follow. This is one of those "must have" books if you are interested in teaching someone to knit because they fidget or just want to be creative.

Summary: Not Just For Kids...
Review: This is the book my 8-year-old daughter and I used together to learn how to knit. As the subtitle says, it's a book for kids "of all ages".

When you read through this book you will not only learn how to knit, but you will have a deeper appreciation of needlework in general. The author covers what basic supplies you need to get started, how to make your own knitting needles (yes! And it is a lot easier than you may think), how to decorate your needles, why you should start using two different color needles, what to do when you don't have any needles (you can still knit with your fingers, the book shows you how!), how to make "kool-aid" yarn in super-fun colors, and where yarn comes from. The instructions were much simpler to understand than those in the traditional "adult books" and after finishing a few of the basic projects, I actually felt inspired to learn more, as did my daughter.

If you are looking for a terrific alternative to TV and video games then definitely buy this book. There are plenty of photographs of girls AND boys from all different races and creeds who seem to be enjoying their time spent knitting, and the pages are splashed with fun colors and typeface.

5 Stars. This is the very best beginners book on the market!

Summary: This book is amazing!
Review: This really is an excellent, unintimidating, extremely well-produced book written by a true expert in the craft. I absolutely ADORED the projects, of which I can name a few: little animal puppets that can double as washcloths, knitted caterpillars, dishclothes, sampler scarves, eyeglass cases, and backpacks. I felt that the projects were very well designed.

My knitting teacher lent me her copy to see if I would like it. I just picked a project I liked (an owl puppet). I didn't really know what else was out there since I was a new knitter, but when comparing it with other sources I have seen since, I'm glad I started with this book. It made knitting seem really fun to me and not deadly serious and strict.
