Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Young Immigrants Featured Review Review: Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan won the 2002 ALA Pura Belpre Award, and rightfully so. The book serves as an excellent tool for teaching about California history, the Great Depression, Mexican immigration, forced repatriation, and labor camps. Esperanza's transformation from a protected rich girl to an independent young woman is believable and engaging. Young readers will enjoy reading (or hearing their teacher read) about Esperanza's budding romance with Miguel, her struggles to care for two babies (including hand-washing cloth diapers!), and her decision to "rise" above natural feelings of jealousy and revenge to rescue another girl. The author's biographical notes at the end of the novel reveal how the "American Dream" came true for her family.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A Historical Story from Riches to Rags Review: Esperanza Rising is a beautifully told story of a 13 year old girl living a storybook life on Rancho del las Rosas with her father, mother and grandmother. Her life consists of private school, parties and the luxuries of Mexico's upper class. However, this all comes to a tragic end when her father is murdered. Her tyrannical uncle now owns the family land and he wants to marry Esperanza's mother and send Esperanza to boarding school. To escape the marriage, Esperanza and her mother emigrate to California with a family of their former ranch workers. Esperanza must live in the labor camp sharing one small house with two other families. Esperanza also must learn how to help out and do household chores. She doesn't even know how to hold a broom! When her mother becomes ill and must be hospitalized for months, Esperanza learns how to work in the fields to pay her mother's hospital bills. This is a story about the strength of family, growing up, the harsh realities of prejudice and hope. The roots for Pam Munoz Ryan's story begin with her own grandmother who told of her experiences emigrating to the US from Mexico and working in farm labor camps. This story illustrates the difficulties of life for farm laborers in the 1930s and is a good link to children's study of California history.

Esperanza, Ramona(mamma), and Sito Orgeto(papa) are the owners of El Rancho de la Rosas and thier servant boy is Miguel, but he is more than a servant, he is a friend. The Ranch is in Mexico where a terrible tragety happened forcing Esperanza, Mamma, and all the servants to move to the US to work without papa. This is a heartbreaking story it happened during the 1900s. One day Esperanza waited and waited to see her dad but soon came Tio Luis came with the news and Sixto Orget's belt buckle. Not so long after Tio Luis asked mama to marry, but she said no. Then when he asked her to reconsider, she said yes with a trick up her sleve to sneak out of Mexico to the US. Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A Pleasant Surprise Review: First of all, I would like to say that to read this book would not be my first choice. In fact, a book called Esperanza Rising with a picture of a girl floating in the air is probably not any middle-schooler's first choice of a book. But, fortunatly, I have a really cool reading teacher that knows that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Esperanza Rising is a story about an 12-year-old girl who lives in Mexico. She is fairly rich, and she lives on a big ranch with her parents. Then, her perfect life falls apart. Her father dies, her powerful uncle threatens her, and her house is burned down. Esperanza is forced to flee to the United States with her mother in poverty to work in a labor camp. It is the very life she has never known. This book tells Esperanza's story (A true one!) and how she must adjust to her new life. It is no wonder that in Spanish, Esperanza means, "Hope".

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Riches to Poverty Review: I read the Pura Belpré Award winning book Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. I give it four stars for its sensational plot and amazing characters. This story hooks you from the very beginning. It's about a teenage girl who grew up on El Rancho de las Rosas, Aguascalientes, Mexico. She has a glorious life with expensive dresses, parties, and a loving Papa, Mama, and Abuelita. Her life suddenly turns upside down when her Papa is killed by a band of angry bandits on his way back from working in the fields. Esperanza, Mama, and the servant family escape from her angry uncles to a work camp in America. Esperanza must learn little tasks, such as sweeping or washing laundry, which she had never been faced with before. Mama's sudden illness of Valley Fever inspires Esperanza and gives her strength to bring her back to good health. This story is based on the author's grandmother's real life experiences. You become close to the characters and can easily relate to their emotions. It's easy and enjoyable reading that also educates you on a true Mexican's life in an American work camp. It also informs you of striking within the camps; a feared and regular occurrence. Esperanza Rising gives you a foreign view of the important things in life. The story's beautiful ending and persevering characters is why I gave this book four stars. It gives you hope to never be afraid to start over. Along with this book, I would also recommend The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. I am an 8th grader who loves to read.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Esperanza Rising, got my Esperanza Rising Review: Imagine a wealthy family living in Aguascalientes, Mexico on El Rancho De Las Rosas, a large farm with a vineyard. In this family, there is a loving mother, a kind and generous father, a wise grandmother, and a young daughter. They live contentedly in a mansion and have many servants to do their bidding. The daughters name is Esperanza, and while she is waiting with excitement for her birthday, (coming the day after) her father is murdered by bandits. Esperanza's happy world suddenly crashes down upon her in a sea of grief and despair. Esperanza and what's left of her family make the long journey to America in hopes of creating a new life. They soon learn that America is not an easy place to make a living, and they have to work hard to support themselves. Things start to look up for Esperanza, until chaos enters her world again as her mother falls ill. Esperanza must work the hardest she ever has to single-handedly support her family, and must keep her hopes for a better life. In Spanish, Esperanza means hope, and her hope is certainly rising.
Set during World War 2, this historical fiction novel is one you just can't put down. I really enjoyed this book because while it was educational, it was a great story enriched with fabulous characters who you felt you really knew, fabulous settings, and Spanish phrases that helped to set the mood of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a captivating story that you won't want to put down, especially young girls and boys who need to learn how good their life is. This book won the Jane Adams Children's Award, and I certainly understand why. This book is very uplifting, saying: Aquel que hoy se cae, se levantara manana. He who falls today may rise tomorrow, and gives Esperanza to all.
