Summary: Grandfather's Journey is exquisite!
Review: Grandfather's Journey was my introduction to one of my very favorite authors and illustrators, Allen Say. This magnificently written & beautifully painted book is a masterpiece and a wonderful tribute to Allen's grandfather and progenitors. That anyone would rate this anything but a 5 prompted me to write this review. As a schoolteacher on a very limited budget, I only buy hardback books that I consider exquisite. This was a definite MUST HAVE after I read and re-read it. As a family member, it gives me ideas on how to write my family history. As a school teacher, it provides the perfect example for my students of how they, too, might capture their family's heritage. Definitely a 5!!

Summary: One of the Best Children¿s Book Ever
Review: Grandfathers Journey is an awesome kids book. I gave it four stars because it was very good and unlike most children's books it was not very predictable. The book had extremely good pictures in it. It was a very god choice for a Caldecott award. The book was good for people from ages 3 - 83. Even the little history in it was accurate. All in all, the book was surprisingly good.

Summary: Wonderful story and stunning illustrations
Review: I bought a copy of this book for all of my nephews and nieces (6 copies total!). It is truly wonderful---one of the best picturebooks I have ever seen.
The watercolor/illustrations have a dreamy quality to them and they make you want to get in a car and drive across the US to meet the people Grandfather meets and to see the cities, deserts and landscapes he sees.
The story is also deeply moving. Say does an incredible job illustrating the ways in which people who move from one country (or even one region of a country) to another feel both a love for their new home as well as a longing for their old. Having lived abroad and felt that pull, I have often found myself in tears as I read the book.
For my nieces and nephews it was a wonderful way to introduce them to the experiences of their immigrant great-grandfather and great-grandmother. I can't recommend this highly enough!

Review: I had to do a report for one of my teaching classings on a Cadlecott or Newberry book. I chose a Cadlecott and after reading several books, I picked this one because it was a very moving story about how one's generations experiences affect the rest of the family. And how sharing stories with members of your family can make a profound difference in someone else's life.

Review: I have met Allen Say and he told us the story of under the cherry tree and told it well. Though I liked it Grandfather's Journey and Emma's rug are my top two favorites.

Summary: Beautiful pictures and storyline, but not a repeat storybook
Review: I judge a child's storybook by how often my son grabs it off the book shelf at storytime. However, this story is never chosen by my son and is only read at storytime when I chose it. Grandfathers Journey has beautiful pictures and a storyline that will hit the heart of any adult who has moved from one area to another

Review: I like this book because it has very interesting pictures. The characters are the grandfather, his wife, their daughter, her husband, and their son. They're all important to the grandfather.
The setting was interesting because the grandfather moved a lot. He was in Japan. Then went to America and moved to California and back to Japan to get his wife.
He always wants to be in another place at the same time. The grandfather wanted to go back to Japan but the war started.
