Summary: hauntingly compelling
Review: I have a relative who lives very near the places described in the book, and she decided to give our family a copy after a walk round there in 1988, when I was little. I didn't read it until years later, but I was gripped. The story, the descriptions, the way it is written - everything! - is so deeply exciting and involving. I would recommend this book to anyone, but beware! The descriptions of the journey through the mines are not for the faint-hearted! Enjoy!

Summary: Fantastic
Review: I loved this book.I was looking for a book similar to Harry Potter-after reading all of them in a month-and then I found this, a fantastic book. Both with magic and sorcery I found that I could not put it down.It gets more exiting at the end but I think you will enjoy it all.If you've read Harry Potter you should read this, its a bit more of a challenge but great. When I finished it I moved on to The Moon of Gomrath, another Tale of Alderly and that is brilliant so Far.

Summary: My favorite book.
Review: I read the swedish translation "Den magiska stenen" of this book as a child and it was my favorite book for a very long time. It has the qualities and uncertainties of an intriguing, exiting and nuanced myth and still it is placed in a partially modern setting. It includes mythic characters - or maybe the opposite - it includes modern children in a mythic setting without letting go of a good sense of balance. I'll reccomend it to everyone, especially those who feel that Tolkien is slightly over the hill with heroes and legends and that CS Lewis got stuck between the coats and never really got out.

Summary: Memories from Childhood
Review: I read this book 29 years ago at a time when reading was a chore. I had forgotten the story, but remembered the book was something very special. I've been searching for it maybe 10 years now, so was thrilled that it came back into print! I bought it for my neice, but HAD to read it when it arrived and now I know why I remembered it all this time.. what a fantastic tale!

Summary: Legend, myth, and magic, this book's got it!
Review: I read this book while I was visitng my cousin in Hong Kong. She was reading it for school, but I could not put it down! I've been looking for books by Alan Garner ever since. I love the allusion to myths and legends. The book weaves a complicated web that leaves you satisfied in the end, but expecting a sequel too!

Summary: Excellent Childrens Book
Review: I remember reading this book as a child and loving it. I lived not far from Alderly Edge so was intrigued that these magical characters might exist. I still have this book on my bookshelf and Alan Garner's other novels and as an adult, still find them a wonderful read. Highly recommended.

Summary: This book is still amazing to me 20 years later.
Review: I totally agree with everyone else's reviews, and thought I was the only one to have discovered the magic of this book - I'm glad I was wrong. I'm a huge Alan Garner fan and this book was a study read at school 20 years ago. Usually I greatly dislike books I'm 'forced' to read, but this one is so magical, fantastical and memorable that I make a point to read it every year...and every year it gets better. I shall definitely be passing this onto my children!

Summary: Wonderful children's story
Review: I was given this book by my fifth grade teacher in the early 70's, and I have always been grateful to her for sharing it with me. I have also read the sequel, "The Moon Of Gomrath", and it is just as good. It's hard to say why this of many, many books I read as a young person was so special, except maybe in it's immediacy and the fact that many of the elements of the story are drawn from ancient myth. It felt very real to me, and in a way it still does. I intend to give it to my niece and nephew on their 10th birthdays (they are twins).

Summary: Bloody Marvelous Read
Review: I was raised about 6 miles from Alderly Edge and the author really brings it to life. The feel of the area is so perfect that even now after 18 years (when I first read the book) I am transported back to many a Halloween spent exploring, terrified but having a great time.In case anyone is interested there really is a wizards well. I am very greatfull to the person who decided to reprint "The Weirdstone" as my copy is very dog-eared and I hope Mr Garners other books will be released very soon.

Summary: A childhood favorite that I still reread 20 years later!
Review: If you are looking for a book that will introduce kids to the world of the fantastic, this is the one to pick! I am glad to see it back in print--my old copy is falling to pieces. This book is a must-read for any Fantasy fan of any age, don't let the label "juvenile" fool you! It is far better written than many so-called "adult" fantasy novels.
