I was captivated, entranced. I absolutely obsessed until my parents presented me with my own copy. The art is breathtaking, the storyline simple and meandering, but-told through the notes and sketches of a man's journal found in a dusty old library-fully believable.

Over seven years later, I still find myself returning to the wonderful pages of this book, over and over again. It sits on my bookshelf in all of its multicolored glory, begging me to take it out every so often and lose myself in the world it creates once again.DINOTOPIA tells the story of Arthur Denison and his son Will, both shipwrecked upon an island from which there is no escape, in the form of a diary, found in scholarly research years later. A delight to any child who once dreamed of dinosaurs, you follow the pair as they acclimate themselves to a world where dinosaurs and humans coexist and are both the better for it. Every new invention that is discovered is a delight and you find yourself drawn into their story even more than you might expect - I have, on several occasions, found myself singing the Dinotopia anthem included about halfway through the book. Even more so than the story though, every child will delight in the vivid pictures that accompany it. Full color illustration with as much detail as these are rare and always worth the time to savor. To any child who ever envisioned what dinosaurs looked like, his book is an eyeopener. Brilliantly colored drawings match just what the little models we used to play with showed. The care and detail in every drawing makes turning the pages a delight. At sixteen, I love this book just as much as I did at nine. Its hopeful message and visual beauty were so enthralling that I was disappointed when I realized that the island couldn't exist because a satellite would have found it by now. DINOTOPIA is definitely a favorite of mine and always will be. I look forward to my chance to read this to my children. I am sure they will find it just as wonderful as I do today.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: An excellent book for reading to children. Review: My six yr old son loves dinosaurs, and this book is a beautiful work that actually has brought tears of joy to his eyes. It's both an incredibly imaginative fantasy, and a marvelous jumping-off point for discussion of history, culture, and science. I would suggest this book as the basis for Child-Centered Learning in elementary schools, as well. I was prepared to be adultly skeptical when I picked it up, but it has won me over.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Dinotopia is Utopia Review: Suspend your beliefs, accept the mind-boggling premise & let your eyes convince your mind as you drool over James Gurney's exquisite pictures. This is for reading in company, for snuggling around a pool of light when all the day's chores are done, your home is warm, your critters fed & you all want to go on an adventure of the mind. It is a fantastically illustrated & evocatively written account of a father & son's adventures & discoveries on a lost island. It is a wonder-filled, well-wrought adventure following in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson, Jules Verne & Jane Yolen...

Review: The journal type entries in this book make it ideal for classroom study. The vocabulary is challengenging and the social aspects of the book are thought provoking. Students do not get bored even if they need to read it over and over. More advanced students find much to analyze while less advanced students are interested and learning. So why can't I find any paperbacks in print for my Middle School students?
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Oh, wow!!! Review: This book is absolutely fantastic. I wish there were more books like this: quality books with both beautiful drawings and a beautiful storyline. This book is absolutely worth every penny, and then some. James Gurney is really onto something big here. I have had this book for 5 years about, and still read it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A True Classic! Review: This book is based on a fictional diary found by James Gurney, which tells the story of Arthur Denison and his son William Denison, shipwrecked during one of their voyages and saved by dolphins only to find themselves on an incredible island, unknown to the world, and habituated by dinosaurs.
The incredible thing is that the dinosaurs in this island live side by side with humans. Arthur and his son soon find out that the people in Dinotopia are very friendly as are the dinosaurs. Arthur and his son travel trough the island discovering and learning about the island and about a civilization where there is virtually no violence or war or prejudice of any kind. This island is a true Utopia.
The way the story is written you can't help it but fall in love with this place. The illustrations are so beautiful you feel like Dinotopia could exist. The story is very touching. This book is one of those books that really make your imagination come to life. The whole journey trough the island is incredible. Although this is a children's book, this book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
