Summary: Great rhyme, great sentiment, cute illustrations
Review: We like to read this book quite a bit. I've got it memorized (but that's not all that hard). The illustrations are the fat, sweet frogs, hippos, cats, etc. you know from Boynton's other books. This storyline encourages kids to join in and have fun rather than sitting out and feeling sad about it. I don't feel like it encourages this at the risk of damaging sensitive quiet types. Rather, I think it helps kids who look on and wish they could join in but just don't.
The rhyme is great and easy on your sanity. The kids like the pictures (moose and goose at a restaurant?). The book's fun, interesting, readable (even repeatedly), and carries a good message for kids.

Summary: a family favorite
Review: We love this book so much we have 3 copies, 1 for each child! I know the book by heart, and my 5- and 2-year-old are close. We prompt our girls to finish the lines as we read along. They can even "read" the book to each other.

This book is filled with wonderful rhymes, and a silly story kids love. It also provides parents with an opportunity to teach kids an important lesson: be nice and include others when you play.

Summary: Makes My Baby Smile Every Time
Review: We own a few Sandra Boynton books, and this one is, by far, both my baby's and my favorite. My daughter is four months old, and her face lights up when I read "But Not the Hippotamus" to her. I think she enjoys it because of a combination of the pleasing rhythm and the repetition since I read or recite it to her multiple times every day. I've read this book so many times, I now have it memorized but still find it thoroughly amusing. The characters are participating in such delightful activities, and the illustrations are perfect. I plan to buy this book as a gift every time friends or family members have a new baby.

Summary: One of my Daughter's favorites
Review: What a great book! Not only does my 7 month old love this one but I also find it fun to read. The pages are easy for her to help turn and the story is just zany enough to keep us coming back again and again. I would definately recommend this book.

Summary: A great little story!
Review: What a wonderful story! I never thought that my almost 2-year old would say "hippopotomus" and "armadillo" but he does! And when the hippo joins in, he puts his arms in the air and yells "But YES, the hippopotomus," then saddens slightly as we finish with, "But not the armadillo." It's definetely a five-star book.

Summary: Very much up to the Boynton standard!!!
Review: When a hog and a frog do a dance in a bog the hippo *chooses* not to go. And the cat and two rats trying on hats would most likely love to have the hippo along! Sorry, but I just don't see any 'tacit encouragement of leaving someone out' as one reviewer claims. The hippo is just a little shy. And in the end when the hippo decides to....oh, I shouldn't spoil it. Also love the way Boynton sets up for the 'But not the armadillo' sequil!

Summary: Boyton - best boardbooks
Review: You can't go wrong with any of her books. The illustrations are colourful and charming. The short lines have an easy rhythm, making them a fun start to reading. This one even throws in a little message on being a good friend.
