Summary: But Not the Hippopotamus
Review: This book is great! My son is 8 months old and if I sit it in front of him it will keep his attention for quite a while. The illustrations are great and it is a lot of fun for even a parent to read to the child!

Summary: Great little kids book!
Review: This book was great! I have a 6 month old who I have started
to read to and he loves the bright colors! The sing songy lyrics make this book one of his favorites! He loves the hard
pages to chew on as well!

Summary: But not the hippopotamus....
Review: This is a great little book to read to the little people. The illustrations are humorous, and the rhythm and banter of this book is great. All of the Boynton board books are worth having, but this one is a particular gem.

If your child is to the age that they like the notion of call and response songs and books, they will LOVE this book. As you will see, everyone in this book is living it up, and we see them all doing fun things. But at the end of every little scenario you get, "But not the hippopotamus"

(It is amazing how quickly a child can learn to say hippopotamus, or what variations on that word a child will create!) But, don't fret for our poor hippo, he does get a happy ending, but....

READ THE BOOK! I won't give the spoiler.

Summary: Approved for children ages 3 - 74
Review: This is not only a favorite of my 3 year old niece, but also of myself (26), my mom (52), and my grandma (74). It is so much fun to watch my niece's excitement as we read this story and she directs us all to shake our fingers and say in unison, "But NOT the hippopotamus!" It was one of the first books she ever picked to have read to her, and it remains a must-read today. I just ordered a new copy for her Christmas stocking as her original has been taped and re-taped numerous times. Highly recommended for everyone :)

Summary: Excellent pick for baby; great gift idea
Review: This is one of my favorite books to read to my son now 11 months. The ryming flow of the story gives this book it's good rythm. The author does a good job of keeping the story simple with a nice ryming flow that is not over done. It holds the adults attention as well as the childs. There are just enough words per page as my son looks at the pictures and turns the pages while I am reading to him.

I have the board book and highly recommend this type of book. It encouranges interaction from the child allowing them to turn the pages and look at the pictures without tearing the pages. I have found that my son is quite interested most of Boynton's books. I have read to him from a very early age and he will often pick up her books and page through them and bring them over to me to read them to him.

Boynton's books were recommended to me at a hospital sponsored child education class and I highly recommend them to you. They make great gifts.

Summary: Fantastic Book!
Review: This is one of the best chidren's books I have ever read to my sons. I enjoy reading it as much as they enjoy listening and looking at the pictures.

The person who gave this book such a low rating obviously did not pay much attention to the story. It is a terrific story about having the courage to avoid getting discouraged, and being very happy with the outcome.

Summary: Introducing: The Amhoho!!
Review: This is probably my favorite baby-age book of all time. Like the other Boynton books, it is easy to handle (the board pages are quite tough), very brightly illustrated with the most delightful drawings (imagine a hippopotamus hiding behind a tree!), and features a simple but wonderful story.

It seems that all the animals have wonderful things to do, and they scamper off to do them on every page...But Not the Hippopotamus!!! (a phrase repeated at the end of each page, to young children's delight). But then, something wonderful happens. The happy hippo is invited to join the others! And off he runs, full of joy.

But Not the Armadillo! And the very last page, the most nonsensical nonsequitor of all, is a lonely looking armadillo standing all alone. And hence the "amhoho." When my daughter was just over a year old, she began to talk about the "amhoho." When given her first push-toy, a brightly colored bumble bee, she squealed, "It's the amhoho!"

I don't know how long it took us to figure out that the "amhoho" was the armadillo on the last page of this book. My suggestion is: put a little amhoho into your lives with this fabulous book, the best of everything Boynton has done.

Summary: One of our family favorites
Review: This was one of the first books we read to our son, and we enjoyed it night after night! We'll be putting this board book in his "memory box". The rhyming and pace are a lot of fun. If your baby likes this, he/she will also love Boynton's Hippos Go Berzerk -- even sillier and a great way to learn numbers and counting!

Summary: Wonderful Book
Review: This was the first book I had bought for my son (my wife had stocked up before he was born) and it was based upon reviews and some good things I had heard about the author. Well, after two weeks with the book, it is now my favorite bedtime book and more importantly, it holds my 4 month old's attention.

I am so pleased with this book that I just ordered 3 other of Ms. Boynton's books, which I am happily awaiting.

All in all, I advise anyone looking for a humorous, entertaining, child friendly book to order this one.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Hippopotamus for all ages!
Review: This wonderful story book has colorful pictures, exciting rhymes, and sturdy pages for the very young child. In addition, it has a deeper theme for slightly older children. Adults reading to the child can use the situation of the hippopotamus to aply to socialization issues a child may be facing. Sandra Boynton's characters are charming, and her humor transcends the generations.
