Summary: an exuberant story of a girl and her dog
Review: "Because of Winn Dixie", by Kate Dicamillo, was an excellent fictitious, story, with a present time period, about a girl named India Opal Buloni and her dog, Winn Dixie. During India Opal Buloni's first summer in her new town, she adopts a strange sweet, stray dog, called Winn-Dixie, named after the southern grocery store where he is found. India Opal, or Opal for short, is a preacher's daughter. Opal's life severely changes when her father receives a new job, and she has to move to a trailer park in a new town. She struggles with the sadness and curiosity about her alcohol-abusing mother, who she has not seen since she was three years old, when she deserts their family. Winn-Dixie is, a magnificent stray who, among other talents, can grin with a full mouth of teeth. Opal and Winn Dixie establish an outstanding friendship over the summer. Winn Dixie is responsible for the relationship Opal establishes with her father, which has never existed before. Opal learns that friends are kept forever. From reading this story one should learn never to complain. Opal never complains, and she has it pretty hard. This story acknowledges and expresses, friendship, love, forgiveness, tolerance, longing and new beginnings. This book is highly recommended to children 8-15.

Summary: A short story but an amazing one!
Review: The fictional novel, " Because of Winn-Dixie", by Kate DiCamillo is a simple but interesting novel. This book explores the life of a girl named India Opal Buloni. She moved to Naomi, Florida with her father who is a Preacher. They moved after her mother left them both when she was three. When India and her father arrived to Naomi, her father got a job at the Open Arms Baptist Church of Naomi. On a hot summer day the preacher sent India to a local Winn-Dixie to get a couple of necessities and that is where she found her dog, her first best friend. She named the dog Winn-Dixie. From the library to her church, India and Winn-Dixie went everywhere together. In fact, they were inseparable. Initially India didn't have any friends but this proved to be a life-changing summer. Moving to a new place and trying to fit in is hard, but as the summer progressed, she made many different friends. The friends she made included Mrs. Franny Block, a middle-aged woman who owned the Herman W. Block Memorial Library and Amanda Wilkinson, a girl who India would be going to school with in August. Also, she befriended Otis who worked at Gertrude's Pet Shop, Gloria Dump, an elder who lived in Naomi, Sweetie Pie Thomas, a girl who was a couple years younger than India and the two trouble twins, Dunlap and Stevie Dewberry. India made all these friends over the summer all because of Winn-Dixie. DiCamillo wrote this book not just to tell a wonderful story, but to share with the reader that acceptance could brighten anyone's day. I think that anyone who reads this book would learn that everyone needs a friend human and animal alike. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a touching story that has a heartfelt message. It is a quick read so if you need a short story this one will hit the spot. If you pick this book to read, it will be the highlight of your day!

Summary: Winn-Dixie, a winner!
Review: When Opal claims ownership of the mangy dog who has created chaos of the produce department of the local Winn-Dixie grocery store, her life is about to take a turn for the better. Opal's newly-adopted canine, who smiles showing all his teeth until he sneezes, becomes the catalyst for her to meet and befriend a cast of new friends in Naomi, Florida. Perhaps the most unforgettable of all the characters is Winn-Dixie himself. Fortunately, this is one dog story in which the dog doesn't suffer a tragic fate.

Summary: Newbery winning material!
Review: Wow! What a seemingly simple yet powerful story of acceptance, love, family, friends, and a myriad of other aspects of life that Dicamillo manages to capture in her wonderful book. IF ever a book deserved a Newbery, this is one, because of all it says beyond its plot of Opal and Winn Dixie. I am a children's librarian, and I have been HIGHLY recommending this book to children and adults, and want more copies for my library system! It's touching without being sappy and it did make me cry and laugh, which I find rare in modern children's literature. Check it out from your library and/or buy your own copy!

Summary: SUNDAY AFTERNOON MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB
Review: This month we read "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo. This book is about a girl named India Opal Balone who lives in a trailer park with her dad in Naomi, Florida. Her father is the preacher at the Open Arms Baptist Church of Naomi. Winn-Dixie is a stray that Opal found in the Winn-Dixie grocery store. Opal's mother left her when she was three and she always wanted to see her. This book is wonderful, but I'd only give it four stars because it wasn't long enough! BY ELIZABETH G. AND MOM

Summary: SUNDAY AFTERNOON MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB'S TOP 10
Review: I thought it was a really good book. It was exciting from beginning to end. It was so good I pretty much couldn't put it down.

Because of Winn-Dixie I learned that not all children's books have to have a Walt Disney happy ending. Opal learned to face her saddness and disappointment ... because of the love she felt for the Preacher and Winn-Dixie. This is a great book for 5th graders grappling with loss.

Summary: irresistable, heartwarming book
Review: "Because of Winn-Dixie" is the kind of book you recommend to all your friends because you want everyone to experience the story, the characters and the feelings they evoke. Through her found mutt, the main character gets to know the new town to which she has moved, greets people she probably would not have gotten to know and learns more about her absent mother from her emotionally distant father. That dog is a miracle worker. Each person I have recommended this book to has thanked me and gushed about it. Take the time to add it to your list...any age would enjoy it.

Summary: A "Warming of the Heart" Reading Experience
Review: This book is a must read! I agree with the reviews already posted and want to address other points. Opal learns in her experiences that many people have sorrow in their lives. This awareness comes to her as she learns to understand and help others who need her. She also learns that sorrow shows itself in many different forms or "flavors." Read the book . . . the candy theme woven throughout the story is fantastic!

Summary: Because of Winn-Dixie
Review: This is a wonderful story of a young girl and her dog. The friends she makes because of the dog are diverse, well-developed characters. The rich descriptive language transports the reader to a small town in Florida. As a 4th grade teacher, this will be the first book I read aloud to my class when we return to school.
