Summary: mstratman review
Review: This is a sweet story about real life situations. It includes a separated preacher and his daughter Opal. After moving to a new town, Winn-Dixie becomes part of the family. They meet lots of new frends with trials of their own. This book is delightful and compassionate. It is down to earth and easy to read. I would recommend it.

Summary: Just Because
Review: After a good friend continually told me to read this book (for over a year), I finally decided to get it and read it. As a huge fan of children's literature, I didn't really understand what could be so great about a story of a girl and her dog. And in and of itself, it isn't so great. So, why read it? Because there is a measure of greatness and wonder in this book.

The greatness of this book lies in its simplicity. Little India Opal Buloni and her preacher-dad have just moved to a small town called Naomi in Florida. When she takes in a stray dog, things start changing for the new girl in town. Beforehand she was shy and bored. Now, she is meeting people, making friends, and even making friends out of potential enemies. It's an enjoyable read that doesn't bore you with irrelevant details; and every chapter wastes no time in getting straight to the point. Even a slow reader like myself could finish it in one sitting.

Like I said: this book's greatness is found in its simplicity. There's no jaw-dropping plot twists or anything like that. It's just a sweet celebration of friendship.

P.S. Thanks, Julia.

Summary: The book is a winner
Review: Children in Texas love the book so much, they just voted it the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award for 2001-2002. All over Texas, elementary students read 20 books and vote on the one they like the best and this year Winn Dixie was it. It truly deserves the honor.

My favorite part of the story was when the animals were out of there cages. I also liked when Opal first met Winn-Dixie the dog smelled. And I felt sorry for Opal cause her mom dranked beer . I also liked the book cause Winn- Dixie ran back and fourth in the room.

Summary: great read aloud
Review: A gentle story of a lonely girl, India Opal Buloni and her father, a preoccupied Southern Baptist preacher, both of whom are still aching from the abandonment of their wife and mother, a woman suffering from alcoholism, compounded by her hatred of being a preacher's wife, as it made her feel "like a bug under a microscope." Enter Winn-Dixie, a bedraggled mutt India Opal rescues from the Winn-Dixie grocery store, thus his name, as it was the first name India Opal could think of when trying to convince the store manager he indeed belonged to her. Despite Winn-Dixie's homely appearance, he has the charm, not to mention the ability to smile, only a dog can have and he, along with a jar of pickles and Littmus Lozenges, is the catalyst for helping an eclectic group of people find friendship in a small southern town.

My only complaint is a small one. While I understand the story is driven by dialect, I do wish authors would make every attempt to use proper grammar whenever possible. I don't think using "good" and "well" correctly would have detracted from the story.

That aside, this book is a must read for anyone longing for a story full of charm and hope with some good life lessons learned along the way.

Review: What a wonderful book! I must confess that I'm a dog lover and the author's descriptions of Winn Dixie are perfect. At times, I felt as though I was inside the story. I read the book to my students, four different classes, and they all loved it. Bravo!
