Rating: Summary: Dreaming about this book........... Review: I read this book so many times when I was child that it managed to burrow itself into my consciousness and left many images burned into my head: the lovely union between the earth and the sky, Haphaestus hammering out a link of precious metals, Persephone in the dark undertow of the underworld, Leda's beautiful face asleep as two eggs crack open to reveal her children, and other memorable pictures. Even though in the ensuing years I have forgotten about the book, I managed to carry them and periodically they would swim back into view if some memory triggered them. I bought the book in a fit of nostalgia when I stumbled upon this web page. I am so glad I bought it and am enjoying the book yet again. There is a shock of recognition - the strange sense that yes I have not thought of or looked at the book in ages and yet they were always there. The stories are generous and magnificent and instantly readable. Yes, it's not Ovid, but then again it's a children's book. But what a book! The drawings are glorious and full of my shimmering childhood memories: relentlessly checking out that one copy at the library and marveling at the stories and images. I heartily recommend parents everywhere to buy this book for their child. It's such a great impetus to a life long path of learning and reading. So put away those playstations and the tv, if you please. Much joy will be found in these pages. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: my first mythology book Review: I found this book in the library when I was 8 and fell in love with the beautiful art work, the wonderful retelling of the stories and the overall way the book is designed. I checked it out of the library so often that the school librarian eventually gave it to me. I still have a beat up copy with various stains and splotches. This is one of those few books that can be enjoyed by both chidren and adults.
Rating: Summary: Fun way to introduce your children to mythology. Review: This is one of the first books of Greek mythology I read. Reading other reviews I do have to agree that some material was poorly researched...or maybe it wasn't. I think some of the tales might have been changed to grab the attention of the focus audience which is children. The pictures are ever present through the pages, while not cutting corners on words or information. Some pictures even assist in understanding the tales. One picture in particular shows the geneology of the gods in a sort of tree like design. Fun book. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: rebuttal on Andromeda Review: This book is an excellent primer on mythology for any child and is a perfect book to teach kids how to read and get excited by folk tales. However, the interpretation of Andromeda as Caucasian or Ethopian ought to moot, after all, she, and the stories, are GREEK.
Rating: Summary: Great drawings bad research Review: The drawings are superb. The stories are accurate, but the depiction of Andromeda was horrible. Andromeda was an Ethiopian woman, not a caucasian woman. It was a bad representation on their part.
Rating: Summary: The best introduction to the Greek myths ever written Review: I first read this book as a child---it was a favorite of my older siblings who recommended it. All four of us have bought copies as adults and we all keep these cherished copies nearby---so we can consult it often! The book is a fantastic introduction to the Greek myths. The Daulaires write extremely well and they tell the stories in a simple and direct way. And...they tell almost ALL the stories. It's amazing! This book---which I read when I was abt 8---laid the perfect foundation for high school and college Latin as well as for my graduate classes (no joke! I was the only one in my graduate seminars who knew who Asclepius was, who knew the ins and outs of the Trojan wars etc.---all because of this book!). The illustrations in the text are as fantastic as the writing (a rarity!). As a child, I loved the image of Aphrodite rising from the sea (and when I later discovered Botticelli's Venus, I thought "hmm...Botticelli must have been influenced by the Daulaires!"). Seriously, the illustrations are wonderful--my personal favorite---and the one which always comes to mind when someone mentions spring---is the one of Persephone being seized by Hades. It was frightening as a child and in the gloom of winter, I still find it disturbing to visualize it! If you know of an 8 or 9 year old, buy this book immediately (whether it's their birthday or not!). And if you don't know of any 8 or 9 year olds, buy the book for yourself. You will not regret it---it is much better, more accessible and more of a pleasure to read than Edith Hamilton, Robert Graves etc.
Rating: Summary: Best mythology book ever! Review: I have owned and given no less than 12 copies of this book. It clearly and quickly, but in very good detail, outlines the important figures in Greek and Roman mythology and makes them real and vibrant for children. My parents owned many children mythology books, but this was the best. The pictures are vibrant and the text is wonderful. It is, hands down, my most beloved childhood book and now that I have a child of my own, I look forward to the day when he and I can sit down and read these stories together.
Rating: Summary: Great book for art teachers! Review: When my middle school art students were studying the art of Ancient Greece, this book was their favorite resource! Reading the stories of the Greek myths gave them a much better understanding of and appreciation for Greek art and architecture, as so much of the art of Ancient Greece was based on mythology! The kids found the stories entertaining, well-written and within their reading level. They illustrated scenes from their favorite stories and did a variety of other art projects related to Greek mythology. I'd highly recommend this book to other art teachers, especially to those teachers who are interested in incorporating reading and writing across the curriculum.
Rating: Summary: Fun, easy -to-read stories! Review: The first time my Mom told me to read this book I didn't really want to,but after I read the first paragraph,I couldn't stop!! I recommend it for all ages. I am homeschooled, and we use this book for Greek and Roman history.
Rating: Summary: My kids love this book! Review: This is one of their all-time favorite books! I read it aloud to them last year, and this year they both wanted to read it cover to cover themselves. The text is easily understood and the illustrations are great. This is a "must have" for any upper elementary/middle school student. I recently ordered the unabridged cd of this book and I cannot wait to get it! I know my kids will love to listen to it over and over.
