Summary: I love this book!
Review: "North to Freedom" is one of the best books I've ever read! It's totally awesome! The main character, David, escapes from a prison camp and makes his way to Denmark. He is only 12, but he is very wise and knows what is important in life. It made me realize how much I take for granted. This book is definetely worth reading!

Summary: I absolutely did NOT like this book!!!!
Review: ...I did not like it all!...the book is so predictable! By the 3rd to last chapter, I already knew what was going to happen. I do not reccommend this book unless you like books about history.

Summary: Highly recommended
Review: A very beautiful though serious book. David's quest for freedom and his humility in the face of the world where he assumes that he is unimportant and no one cares for him are truly touching. I cried when I read this book. Thankfully, it has a happy ending. Not for very young children, though, because sometimes it is complex and sad/scary, though the author has treated her subject with delicacy.

Summary: A book for all to read...
Review: After I read this wonderful book, I finally realized the price of freedom, and how I took this gift that my forefathers gave to me all for granted. This was a truly touching book that told about the naiveness of a concentration camp prisoner as he journeyed from Italy to freedom in Denmark. I sincerely recommend this book to people of all ages who will take the time to read this magnificent work of art.

Summary: A terrific book!
Review: David begins this wonderful story with almost nothing, but as we travel with him we find out that he has so much more than most kids who have "everything." This is a great book to help kids get in touch with feelings. As a teacher I look forward to sharing it with groups of kids each year.

Summary: North to Freedom
Review: David, a 12 year old, raised in a prison camp, is allowed to escape with instructions to go north to freedom. From the drab, depressing surroundings of the prison camp to the wide world of freedoms, colors, smells, scenery, being clean, and being honest, David cautiously learns about the world around him. This book is a learning adventure at becoming true to one's self. At an early age, this book had a profound effect on my life, David made me stop and appreciate the little things that are such common conveniences in life. At one point in the book, a boy beats up David, but David doesn't fight back. Angrily, the boy asked why he didn't fight back and David said, "Because if I hit you back, I'd be no better than you are. I'd be just as rotten and worthless, and I'd have no right to be free!" It's a lesson all of us can incorporate in our lives. This is always the first book I recommend to anyone.

Summary: Beautiful Characterisation
Review: Despite being brought up in a prison concentration camp surrounded only by adults who were deceptive or broken down, save for a few genuine inmates who seemed to be hiding a secret from him, twelve-year old David is a kind person by nature who feels a strong need to help people without asking for any returns, although he does not consciously know all the time that by doing so, he is performing acts of kindness.

After escaping from the concentration camp, David proceeds with his arduous journey towards the free country of Denmark always insisting on remaining true to himself, and keeping a clear conscience - simply put, he is determined to remain as he is and who he has always been - David.

The beauty of this story lies in the way that it does not directly tell of the courage of David, but simply portrays him as yet another human being who is confused about the happenings around him but who is nevertheless determined to attain complete freedom away from the evils of that concentration camp. In the process of describing the various events that he encounters, the author uses the contrast of the other characters' thoughts and feelings to fully reflect the implicit courage and beauty of David's noble character. This greatly increases the realism and credibility of David's character, and would in short, be one of the most remarkable strokes of bringing a character to life.

Summary: Trust
Review: Do you know what it is like to be hunted? Or to feel the palpable hate from men who destroy everything except what is inside of you? David, from his experience in the concentration camp, simply can not trust anyone. He has to be wary because that is the only way to survive. Parts of him are so deadened inside that when he sees the beautifull it is so much more intense. This book provides a usefull insight into the experience of many that will evoke your compassion and give you some understanding of why some people who are hurt are so reluctant to ever get close again or to seek or even recognize help around them. And through all of this, David is a moral person. He knows why evil must be resisted. Excelent!
