Review: A fun way to introduce the ABCs, new words, and some phonics too! The book seems to grow with the child ...

Summary: Get This Book and Teach Your Kid the Alphabet
Review: A...A...a...a...What Begins With A? Aunt Annies Aligator, A..A..a
Big B, little B, what begins with B? Barber, Baby, Bubbles and a Bumble bee.

Twenty-six stanzas of this whimsey creates a great learning opportunity for your kid. I've taught three of my four kids the alphabet with this gem from Dr. Seuss and my fourth is starting to assualt me at every opportunity with this classic.

The art is typical Seuss, the letter lessons are clever and whimsical rhymes and the cadence is perfect (I've even found myself reciting the entire book aloud on long car trips to quiet the troops -- it will burn into your memory in no time).

As my kids got older and were starting to relate sounds to letters, I found I could always go back to the Seuss memory file to help them associate a sound with it's correct letter. A little teaching tool that really worked for us. (Daddy, what does "pig" start with? 'painting, pink pajamas, policeman and a pail....' P! [big smile])

This is a great and easy way to teach your child his or her ABC's and a love of books at an early age.

Highly recommended.

Summary: I would not, could not, buy this book!
Review: Actually, I did buy it, and was APPALLED by how horribly abridged it is. All the letters of the alphabet are rewritten into uniform, mind deadening rhythm, totally spoiling the charming surprises of the original. Buy the paper edition- maybe your kid will rip it up, but at least it's money well spent.

Summary: Get the full version instead (or also)
Review: Be aware that the board book version of this book is NOT the same as the regular hardcover or paperback versions. The board book version is awkwardly abridged on most pages, and outright changed on others, losing much of the flow and rhythm from the original. We have all three versions (it was one of my favorite books as an early reader); the board book has its place as a temporary solution for little ones who can't yet handle a book with paper pages, but we retired our board book in favor of the real thing as soon as we could.

Summary: A Terrible Version
Review: Be warned! These "Board Books" are not the same as the original versions of the Dr. Seuss classics, but are instead slightly changed versions of the same stories. The normal Dr. Seuss books flow extremely well, provide interesting stories, and have beautiful cadence. These "Board Books" illustrate very effectively why there was only one Dr. Seuss -- basically, the modifications that have been made to the stories make them much less compelling and educational. In particular, the rhyming is never as good, and the meter is non-existent. I will grant that the "Board Book" style is much more durable, as our child has torn a number of the classic ABC pages. In addition, these smaller books are easier for tiny hands to hold. That having been said, I would still encourage you to buy the classic version of ABC instead of this one.

Summary: Making it up as you go along
Review: Dr Seuss' ABC If you think this book will increase your
child's vocabulary or comprehension of the alphabet, you're wasting your time. Dr Seuss shows us again that the secret to poetry is making up your own words....

Summary: Just Fine- particularly for a baby
Review: I am not sure what all the controversy is about. This board book is changed from the original. I agree, the original one is much better in that it's longer and has more of the wild wacky words we associate with Dr. Suess books. However, that doesn't make this board book bad. IN fact, I think it is well done.

The fact that the text is shortened works well in my opinion. Most babies don't really have the attention span to sit for a longer book. The fact that this book is a little bit shorter makes it easier to read to a wiggly year old baby.

The pictures are cute and has the wacky characters we associate with Dr. Suess books. The text is just fine and if you hadn't read the original, you wouldn't really know there was much missing in terms of text.

For a young child, board books are great and reading to a baby and young child is important. I think it is more important that you read to your child rather than worry about what has changed from the original. My son who is three loved this book and now my daughter who is 15 months is enjoying it.

Enjoy.

Summary: A wonderful old favorite
Review: I bought this book for my 14-month old son. The first time I read it to him I realized that I had this book when I was a kid. It brought back great memories. It's laugh-out-loud funny, with wonderful illustrations, of course. My only qualm is that the pictures are a little small in the board book version.

Summary: The first edition is abridged enough
Review: I don't understand why reviewers think a revised edition is required for younger babies. My son of 6 months pays full attention to the unabridged edition, from A to Z and loves it. The only nice thing about this new edition is the board book format. The "revisions" are lame and unwarranted.
