Two years later, our family dog died and I read this book over and over again. It really helped me to deal with the death of my first dog and the death of a few more dogs down the road. The drawings are great and the words healing. I reccomend this book for any dog lover.

It has been a comfort to both my husband and myself, but especially to our two children, ages 7 and 9. This book is written with everyone's own dog and experiences in mind. And at the same time celebrates the special place in the reader's heart that dog has. A must read for anyone of any age who loses their dog.

Cynthia Rylant offers comfort for any grieving pet owner, no matter what his age."When dogs go to heaven, they don't need wings because God knows that dogs love running best." From that simple beginning, this book paints a picture of a place filled with canine joys. There are good-natured geese to bark at, angel children to play with, and dog biscuits to munch. Even strays have wonderful homes and lots of love in dog heaven. It's been over twenty years since I lost my first and favorite dog, and I identified with this book as if the loss had been yesterday. I can't think of a better way to say farewell to a good and faithful friend than to share this book as a memorial.

I read it over and over, even though both of my dogs are still sharing my life with me. It forges in me a deeper appreciation of my two dogs, andt helps me not be afraid of their passing. Cynthia Rylant's masterful imagination paints a picture of the heaven I want to go to...with big fields, a multi-racial God and fluffy clouds with dog-angels. This is a must read for any dog lover, or for anyone who has lost a dog. A great gift to show someone you understand and care.

I've bought several copies for friends who've lost their great companions. Today, I'm sending a copy to my folks, who lost Sam yesterday. The love we receive from dogs is precious; ever true, it sometimes seems to be the only thing right with the world.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: I keep giving my copy away! Review: Cynthia Rylant writes an amazing book that helps people of all ages with the loss of a beloved dog. I gave this book to my 78 year old grandmother who was having a difficult time dealing with the loss of 2 dogs in 3 months. She found parts of it comforting, especially the part about the dogs occasionally returning to their backyards to check-up on their owners. I have read this to children who have lost a dog, and given it to friends. Everyone feels that although it is difficult to read while grieving, something in the text refers to their dog alone. Cynthia Rylant wrote it with their dog in mind.

We lost Jake this summer, our beloved nine year old lab. She now has a wonderful idea of where he is and how he is spending his time. I gave it to a friend today. She and her family lost their dog two days ago. Will give it to my brother's dogs for Christmas. A must for anyone with a true canine companion. I wish there were as sweet and simple a version for human grieving.

Review: This book was originally ordered to comfort my young son after the death of the family's beloved labrador. The author conveys Dog Heaven with such vivid images of a dog paradise that in a first reading one is smiling through the tears. This has been an enormous comfort to me, & I am ordering it again after giving it to a 31 yr old man who needed to keep it. It's a treasure!
