Rating: Summary: A Magical Moment Review: My children hovered excitedly as we opened the box of new books that had just arrived. Each chose the book of their liking and quickly claimed their place on the sofa, eager to begin their new reading adventure. I was reading to our youngest and my husband was focused on the computer. As soon as my 7 year old son opened Robert Sabuda's book, exposing the rotating twister, each of us stopped to watch in awe as he turned each page. Was it the movement of the pop-ups, the detail and color, the smaller hidden pop-ups on each page, the special spectacles, or all that mesmerized us ? This book is truly unique and provided a magical moment for my family. I immediately ordered another as a birthday gift.
Rating: Summary: Another Gem from Sabuda Review: Robert Sabuda is a genius of paper engineering. But the thing that is so remarkable about his work is the fact that his movable illustrations are not only ingenious but that they also relate to the story so brilliantly. THE WIZARD OF OZ is the apotheosis of his illustrating talents and is a must-buy for enthusiasts of the Baum OZ series as well as those who just enjoy a well-made book brilliantly conceived. And, oh yes, my five year-old loves it too!
Rating: Summary: Children Love PopUps Review: My son is five years old and he loves pop-up books! Yes, when he was two, he ripped up every book, magazine, and paper in reach - but we taught him to respect books. Now he takes care of all of his books and his teaching himself to read. This book follows the original story, not the movie. This has intrigued him to read more classics to find the differences between the movie and the original (such as Disney's Alice in Wonderland). Please buy this book for your young children - it will teach them respect for books and to love reading. So what if they "mess up" a page, it's o.k. If it really bothers you, then buy two! My son is bringing this book to school today for show and tell and I hope the other kids play with it too.
Rating: Summary: What An Artist You Are Robert Subuda!! Review: I saw this book on a featured segment that Martha Stewart had on one of her shows recently so I ordered it. I have 2 other previous books by Mr. Subuda and I must say, he has out done himself this time. This is by far the most spectacular pop-up book I have ever seen. When the tornado comes spinning up the moment you open the first page, you are hooked. It is a book to be treasured by children as well as adults for many years. What a great gift this book will make. After seeing this beautiful creation, I do believe that I will shortly become a collector. These types of books are all created by hand, so they are well worth the price.
Rating: Summary: Sabuda does it again Review: My son is 5, and when I first started looking for books to enjoy with him, I discovered Robert Sabuda. His paper engineering goes far beyond a mere "pop-up" and truly enters the realm of the magical. In his OZ book, he has again transcended the pop-up genre. Most of the books I've read to my son until now have been shorter than this one. We read OZ in about half an hour, and my son was involved and entranced the whole time. The only problem is that we now have to move bedtime foward a bit to allow for the extra reading time. If you haven't discovered Sabuda's work yet, you can start here and work backwards. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: "Magical experience" Review: I collect children's books that are "special" and added this book to my collection as one of my favorites! The experience of looking through the pop-ups can only be described as a "magical experience". The illustrations are done in a nostalgic format with vivid colors. The first page really grabbed me...when you open it up a tornato rises up in a whirling motion and goes completely off of the page. There is fine detail (look under the house in "Munchkinland" and you will actually see the wicked witches feet underneath). Emerald City pops up and actually glitters before your eyes (you would swear it was really made of emeralds)! Oz's hot air balloon rises out of one page and spins in suspension. This is more of a collector book and I would not recommend putting it in the hands of a young child to do with as he/she pleases! It is just too beautiful! But, you would definately have fun viewing/reading the book to a young child...and a child of seven or eight would probably be old enough to care for it! There are also several small pop-ups within the sections you open up and read that are quite charming! There is quite alot of story to read within small sections of the pages, or within flaps that open up. But; if you are a collector of "Oz" memorabilia, or love creative pop-up books... this book would be a great addition to your family!
Rating: Summary: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: A Commemorative Pop-up Review: Originally, I ordered this book for my grandson who is just a little over one, thinking I could read it to him and he could enjoy the pictures. No way. This book is mine to keep and I'll order another one for him and put it away until I feel he can handle it with the appropriate awe that this beautifully done book inspires. If you are expecting a very nice pop-up book, get ready to be pleasantly surprised. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the Oz stories, but think about buying two; one for yourself to save and one to let others look at - carefully, very carefully.
Rating: Summary: A Must-Have for Oz fans Review: I received this book from my mom on my 40th birthday three weeks ago. Yes, even 40 year-olds love Oz, and this was a delight to receive. I have been an Oz fan since I was a little girl, and am so happy to have this beautifully made book as part of my little Oz collection. I highly recommend it for adults - probably more than children, because I am just afraid it would get destroyed by little ones. But, at the price Amazon is offering, buy two - one to save, and one to leave on the coffee table!
Rating: Summary: I can't believe this! Review: This has got to be the most incredible thing I've ever seen. If my daughter's eyes light up 1/2 as much as mine did, this book will be worth 10-fold what I paid for it. I, like the other reviewer, am considering buying another one to keep in the shrink-wrap as a collectors item!
Rating: Summary: "Oz" is awesome! Review: I have been collecting pop-up books for a number of years. This is the most beautiful and satisfying intergration of art work, story-telling, and paper engineering that I have ever seen! The pop-ups are all wonderfully surprising and they all work like a charm! I highly recommend this little gem!
