Rating: Summary: Non pc story for real kids Review: Unlike a lot of the junk that masquerades as "children's literature" these days, with goodie-two-shoes children in overly clean worlds, this is a classic example of a "real" child's fantasy. It inspired many of mine as a child. This, and In The Night Kitchen (slightly more scary, for me at least) are must-haves for my children's bookcases!
Rating: Summary: Let The Rumpas Begin. Great imagination for child. Review: My wifes all time favorite childrens story. When reading it to our 3 year old, we all like to pick out our favorite wild things. Mine the one with the big smile and lots of teeth, my sons is the plaid pants, and my wifes the eagle looking one. Truely a classic. Excellent illustrations. I love the pages without words with just the wild things and Max playing together. Short words on the pages are easy for child to remember. My son already knows the last line by heart. I won't ruin it if you have't read it.
Rating: Summary: for when you are feeling wild.... Review: Max is feeling more than a little wild. He feels so wild that a jungle grows in his room! I think we all have times when we like to let loose, growl and insist that things go our way. However, like Max, we quickly grow weary of being so demanding and repelling those around us. Like Max, we need a cuddle at the end of our day. Fantastic book for all the little (and big) wild and woolies out there.
Rating: Summary: Old fashion, great illustrations! Review: This book is a beautifully old fashioned illustrated book with great words to go with it.When Max goes to bed suddenly he has a strange dream and suddenly he is on a boat sailing in the sea. When he finally comes to an island, he meets wild things and makes friends. Max plays with them, etc. And then when Max wakes up he didn't even know it was a dream
Rating: Summary: Timeless Review: I read this book when I was five; I still read it now; and I'm sure I'll read it until I die. The imagination of Sendak's work is timeless. Everytime I read this book, I feel like a young boy, like Max, imagining the world around me change into a jungle, a desert, whatever, inhabited by all kinds of little beasties ! The power of this book comes from a universal desire of children: To change the world around them, to be the kings of that world, and subdue all who inhabit it. This desire lays in adults as well, though dormant in many, but can be re-kindled by leafing through these wonderful pages once more. I recomend this to all children, children at heart, and those who never stopped being children.
Rating: Summary: Made me what I am today... Review: Don't let that scare you. Another... One of the best, from ABSOLUTELY the best. I loved this book as a kid, and fear not, they're not to wild. So, c'mon mom, if you love your kids
Rating: Summary: So much in such a small book Review: The illustrations, the imagination, the pure energy of Where the Wild Things Are fills other reviews here. I wanted to rebut another review posted that suggested that this was a horrible book because it seemed to condone bad behavior in children. Part of the charm of Where the Wild Things Are stems from the fact that sometimes children are mischevious and cause a "wild rumpus" -- but they're still loved, no matter what. So even though Max gets sent to bed without his supper, when he returns from the journey of his imagination, the one who "loves him the most" has left him something good to eat. And it's still hot! To those who think Where the Wild Things Are exemplifies bad behavior, I gnash my terrible teeth and roll my terrible eyes. Lighten up!
Rating: Summary: Captures the Spirit of Childhood Review: This is the classic of all children's books. I've read it to my two kids so many times we all have it memorized. We're on our second copy because the pages were literally falling out of the first copy. Not only is it beautifully illustrated and written, I think we love this book so much because it captures the joys and fears of childhood so perfectly. Max is a creative, willful child who gets sent to his room without supper. Angry at his mother, he escapes to a fantastic world full of wild but controllable monsters where he becomes the King of All Wild Things. But after a while he longs to return to where "someone loved him best of all." He finds that, by leaving his supper for him, his mother still loves him. I don't know of any other book that better captures the feelings of being a child (or of being a parent watching your children grow up.)
Rating: Summary: Get one for the kids and one for your collection Review: One of the most enchanting books I have in my collection. Not many words but the illustration and the theme make this book one you will pull out to read even when the kids are asleep. My kids have a paperback copy that has been read so many times it will need to be replaced but I had to get myself a hardcover which I expect I will be reading to my great grandchildren. After every reading my kids have to act out the story lasting a couple of hours giving me a nice break.
Rating: Summary: My favorite children's book ever. Review: This is my favorite book. The story is marvelous and very close to my heart, and the illustrations are so perfect and fabulous I have four of them on my wall. Sheer genius.
