Rating: Summary: a 'holey' enjoyable book Review: I first came across Sachar's work at University and have loved it ever since. Holes is truly an amazingly well written story which touches on acceptability, non-conformity, friendship, buried treasure, crime and lots of onions! The book is amazingly funny and bittersweet, sometimes both at once. Although the narrative of Stanley's experience at camp and his family history may seem unconnected, they are combined in a narrative technique which is nothing short of genius! The novel sees Stanley escape his family destiny, discover who he truly is and find friendship and courage for the first time. This is a truly satisfying and beautiful read for anyone who has ever gotten into trouble, felt marginalised or had a life full of bad luck. Read it - and you will never look at holes the same again!!
Rating: Summary: It was the most amazing book I've ever read. Review: I first got this after reading an excerpt from the book. It took me one day to finish the book because I couldn't put it down. Even though it is for younger people, i reccomend it to everyone. It made me cry and laugh. I was surprised when the guy who sits in front of me in my math class had already read "Holes!"
Rating: Summary: A reader from Philadelphia ,PA Review: I first heard about Holes from two kids in my class. They said it was really good. When I read the book I saw it was really good. I don't really like to read books; well I do, but I'm pretty picky about the books I read. Holes is about a boy who goes to a disciplinary camp because people thought he stole a pair of shoes that belonged to a baseball player. The shoes were worth 5,000 dollars. So he would have to stay at the camp for 18 months. While there the boy (Stanley) met many other kids. Stanley said it was hard at the camp, the hardest thing of his life.
Rating: Summary: More layers than an onion Review: I first read this book a few years ago, in 5th grade (I'm now in 9th) and recently picked it up again. I was amazed at how many metaphors, layering, etc. I had missed! If you read the book for entertainment and plot, you won't be dissapointed; but you'll be stunned if you look deeper. The metaphor of "holes" has so many possible interpretations! As Stanley digs a five-foot hole in the desert, he "digs" deeper in himself, the past, and human nature. Some of his discoveries are amazing. The book is narrated very sparsely and leaves much thought to the reader. (At one point, when pondering God and a supposed curse that dried up a lake, it actually asks "You decide. Whom did God punish?") It's filled with humor and fantastic storytelling. Each time you peel back a layer, you'll find more. Holes is powerful.
Rating: Summary: This is an excellent book! Review: I found Holes, by Louis Sachar, an engaging, quick read. The personalities and delinquencies of the various characters are exceptionally vivid. I usually prefer books that are more fantastic and unreal, but Holes suited my fancy anyway. This book evoked my sympathy and anger at characters without being so manipulative of the emotions that I couldn?t think for myself. I love how, every now and then, chapters skip to events that happened long ago but are incredibly relevant to the on-going plot. This gives you a whole new set of characters to love or hate. These side stories may not seem to have a purpose, but the book wouldn?t make sense without them. Overall, Holes was intriguing, and I couldn?t put it down until I had read it cover to cover.
Rating: Summary: Grrrreat Book! Review: I found this book to be extremely delightful. It was a great read for me. I teach English to sixth graders and would recommend it to all my students. Mr. Sachar outdid himself. This is a book I will read over and over again.
