Summary: A book that is truly a MUST READ!
Review: Holes, a brilliant book, is about Stanley Yelnats, who is accused of stealing a pair of shoes. Although the shoes just "fell out of the sky", Stanley chose Camp Green Lake instead of jail for a punishment. Stanley, who finds that Camp Green Lake doesn't have a lake, starts to dig 5 by 5 by 5 feet holes once a day, every day, for 180 days. He makes friends with his roomates, X-ray and Zero. But soon he discovers that he isn't digging holes for "character improvement", because the warden is obviously looking for something. Stanley is in for the biggest adventure of his life.

Summary: Holes
Review: Holes, by Louis Sachar is about Stanley Yelnats and the events that occur while he was at Camp Green Lake. It all started when Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of sneakers. At the trial, he was found guilty, even though he really was innocent. So, he was sent to Camp Green Lake, a desert where the only water source available is a hundred miles away in the mountains. There, he dug holes all day. The Warden, the person in charge, told the boys that it would help them build character when actually, she made the boys dig to help her find a treasure. Stanley made a few friends at the camp including Zero, whose real name is Hector Zeroni. Zero has this nickname because he doesn't respond to anybody or anything. Even though everybody thinks that Zero is nobody, Zero and Stanley become great friends and eventually save each other's lives. Then, Stanley taught Zero how to read, and in turn, Zero dug half of Stanley's hole. One day, the Warden caught Zero digging Stanley's hole, and got mad. She threatened to punish him so Zero ran away into the barren desert where he was sure not to survive without food or water. After suffering the pain of digging day after day, Stanley found a golden glass tube. He gave it to X-Ray, one of his friends, because he felt that he owed him a favor. This led to even more trouble misdirecting everyone to the treasure. A few days later, Stanley ran away to go and try to find Zero. After walking for long hours, he finally found Zero hiding from the heat under an old boat sitting in the middle of the desert. They together went towards the mountains where they could find water and hopefully food. After struggling long hours under the boiling sun, they reached the mountain to find a surprise waiting at the mountains and also back at camp. I would recommend this book because it is very enjoyable to read. It's adventurous and funny content make it very creative and interesting. I think that Holes is written for all ages, but especially for teenagers' ages ten to fourteen, although anybody can enjoy it. Louis Sachar is a very talented children's author.

Summary: Holes Review by Carter Boyce
Review: Holes, by Louis Sachar, is a great book about a boy named Stanly Yelnats, who is accused of stealing a famous athlete's shoes, and sent to a place called Camp Green Lake. Just the name, "Camp Green Lake," sets off good images in the head; kids playing volleyball on the beach; others playing Marco Polo in the water. The picture that tags along with this Camp Green Lake is all wrong. At Camp Green Lake there is no lake.
Upon stepping onto the grounds of Camp Green Lake, Stanley Yelnats felt a rush of dread. He saw nothing resembling a camp, or anything resembling a lake, and he knew that he would be stuck here for the next eighteen months.
He is taken to Mr. Sir, who lays out the rules for Stanley. He is given his weekly wardrobe of two pairs of bright orange jumpsuits and discovers that Camp Green Lake is no camp at all, but a Juvenile Correction Facility.
At his room, Stanley is met by other delinquents of Camp Green Lake. They are nicknamed Magnet, Armpit, Zigzag, Zero, X-Ray, and Squid.
The next morning, Stanley sets out with his canteen and shovel to do what he came to the camp to do; dig holes. The Warden believed that if you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day, he would turn into a good boy, and hence, Camp Green Lake was formed. One hole was to be dug every day by each delinquent, and they had to be five feet deep and five feet in diameter. Stanley thought that the Warden's reasons for hole digging were odd; he thought something wrong. What is the real reason that the Warden is making the kids dig the holes? Is it to straighten out the juveniles, or is there something else? If you read the book, you will find out the answer.
Stanley cannot handle digging the holes every day because he is not strong enough. Because of this, he makes a deal with his illiterate friend, Zero. If Zero helped Stanley dig his holes, Stanley would help him learn to read and write. Their deal went along fine for a time until the Warden found out about it. She made fun of Zero for being illiterate and told him to get back to his own holes. He refused and started to run away. No one tried to stop him because Camp Green Lake was the only place with water for one hundred miles.
At this point in the book, Stanley makes a crucial decision. Will he go after Zero and try to escape with him, or will he stay, doomed to dig holes for the next eighteen months? The book explains it all. Read it and you will find out.
I really liked this book a lot. I am a big fan of Sachar's work, and this is by far the best piece of writing that he has ever produced. Holes is descriptive and fun. I would recommend this book to readers of an eight-grade reading level. It is not a hard book to read, but it does have its parts that may not be suitable for the younger reading audiences.

Summary: Don't Give Up!
Review: Holes, by Louis Sachar, is a very interesting and suspenseful novel about a young man named Stanley Yelnats. Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake, a camp for juvenile delinquents, because he was charged with stealing the shoes of a great baseball player. They were told that the reason for digging was to build character. The other members of Stanley's group were Squid, X-Ray, Armpit, Zigzag, Zero, and Magnet. One day, Zero ran away from camp, and after three days he hadn't come back. Everybody assumed that he was dead. On the fourth day Stanley went after Zero. He found Zero living under a boat. When the two began walking, they saw a large mountain with the shape of a thumb on top of it. Stanley found a pool of muddy water, and a huge patch of onions at the top of the mountain. Zero and Stanley became friends. One day, Zero told Stanley that he was homeless, and that his mother had left him. They went back to camp and dug a hole where they thought a treasure might be. While digging Stanley found the treasure chest. Stanley's name was on the chest for it had belonged to his great-grandfather. Stanley's lawyer arrived at the camp to retrieve Stanley because he had been proven innocent. The lawyer brought Zero back to Stanley's house. Zero finally found his mother and they became closer than ever.
I would definitely recommend this book because it is a great novel about a young man who overcomes his fears and challenges. This story teaches many lessons about dealing with the obstacles of life and life's many hardships. I was able to apply what the story taught, to my own life.

Summary: A well written jigsaw puzzle.
Review: Holes, by Louis Sachar, is a very weird and interesting novel. The novel is written like a jigsaw puzzle. It is like a jigsaw puzzle because all the stories fit together. The story begins by talking about the main character, Stanley. Later a story is told about his great-great-grandfather and how he was supposed to have carried a woman up a hill but he didn't. The woman cursed because he forgot. Later on in the story Stanley meets a kid named, Hester Zeroni, mean while the reader knows that the woman, his great-great-grandfather was suppose to carry up the hill, is Madame Zeroni. These two facts fit together like puzzle pieces because these two people are related. I also liked it because it is written in first person. First person helped to show Stanley's true emotions. This also helps him to talk about his experiences first hand. Overall this book was excellent.
