Rating: Summary: Rio's Review Review: Holes is a great story of heroes and foes. There is more than opne story in Holes--it's a story-within-a-story-within-a story. When you read it, you will be amazed at all of the twists and turns Louis Sachar puts together to make you feel as if you are there, in Camp Green Lake, digging a five-foot by five-foot hole. I will admit, that every time you realize something, you gasp as though you had just finished a puzzle that you have been working on for a year. It's just a really, really good book!

Rating: Summary: My Review on Holes Review: Holes is a great story. I would give it 5 stars. The story is suspenseful and adventurous. I like how Sachar made Holes a story within a story within a story. Sachar gives the characters unusual nicknames such as Caveman or Zero. Sachar does not give anything away. You have to make some connections yourself. I would reccomend this book to anybody. I hope you enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: Holes Review Review: Holes is a humorous, interesting, and creative book. Louis Sacher really out did himself with this novel. His characters are creative. Stanley Yelnats is a boy who has lots of troubles. His family is poor and people make fun of him because he is fat. Stanley has no friends at school for this reason. One day Stanley is accused of a crime he did not do. Stanley had a choice of going to Camp Green Lake or jail. Stanley soon finds out Camp Green Lake is nothing but a desolate wasteland where you have to wake up before dawn to dig holes five feet wide and five feet deep. He finds out that the Warden is not making them dig holes for character but she wants to find something. The Warden is a crafty woman who paints her nails with rattle snake venom. Stanley has to deal with the boys from group D and finds friendship he has never had. I have learned that if you try and never give up you will succeed. This book taught me about the power of friendship and trust. As I read this book it made me feel excited. I recommend this book to children and adults of all ages.
Rating: Summary: excellent, a page turner that will get kids reading Review: Holes is a masterpiece, a cleverly put together book that's hard to put down. Kids of all ages will love it. Don't read too much about the plot...just read it yourself!!!
Rating: Summary: Digging for Self Esteem Review: Holes is a novel about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. He is an overweight boy, who gets picked on in school, and always seems to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. He gets sent to Camp Green Lake and says "It was all because of his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." While Holes is modern fantasy, the dialogue provides insight into the main characters, Stanley and Zero (a fellow-campmate). Stanley explains that his great-great-grandfather put a curse on the Yelnats family. The reader learns of Stanley's family history and Stanley helps Zero (who has no family) to learn of his. Throughout the novel, the reader wonders how outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow, Madame Zeroni and Stanley's great-great grandfather all tie together. Sachar is genius in tying this mystery together; he uses understatement at opportune times. For example, at the end of one chapter, Zero tells Stanley: "You know, that's not my real name...Everyone's always called me Zero...My real name is Hector. Hector Zeroni". Recall from above there is a Madame Zeroni. You'll have to read to learn of the connection. Also Sachar uses varied sentence lengths, adaptable for all reading levels. Telling 2 stories can be tricky (Stanley's days at camp and of his family's history), but Sachar uses the right pacing to keep the reader interested and on-track. By the end of the story, Stanley and Zero both have learned about their pasts; and at the same time found themselves through self-esteem. Holes is an ideal novel for kids ages 10 (4th grade) on up. The reader would need good comprehension skills, being that there are 2 stories being told at the same time. While the book touches on juvenile delinquency, homelessness, self-esteem, etc., Sachar has added great humor to inform the reader without him/her knowing. I would use this book for DEAR/SSR, possibly in character development class (many middle schools have this class), and also offer it in my library center in my classroom. Holes is an excellent novel for children and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: "Honey, put that book down and eat your dinner" Review: Holes is a one-of-a-kind tale. It's 2 stories that wind together in the end.The characters seem so real you can sometimes feel exactly how they feel. Stanley Yelnats- notice his last name is his first name backwards- is a boy forced to go live at a camp for boys who have done something bad like stolen something, whatever. The camp is run by mean counsulers and the kids have to dig huge holes each day. The other half is Stanley's family history- of bad luck because of some curse. It's an awesome adventure book about friendship that's immpossible to put down.
