Summary: Bizarre and complex plot--loved it!
Review: "Holes" is one of those books that either you love or you hate; I loved it. The premise is so surreal that you can almost believe it--that Stanley, who had a horrible run of bad luck, should be sent to the strangest detention center ever, banished to dig holes every day.

The plot pulls the reader along, leading you through the bizarre landscape and turns of events, along with a parallel plot that takes place many years earlier in the same place. It is some time before you begin to discern how these plots will dovetail, but dovetail they do, and it impels you to read on and see how it all works out for Stanley.

The plot is almost like a modern morality play, and the characters are so well drawn, that you become engaged with them all, the good and the bad. If you are a reader who loves what my colleagues and I refer to as "weird" books, this will be a great read. I have used it successfully as a read aloud with 6th graders, and they loved it, too.

Summary: "Holes"; the best yet by Sachar
Review: "Holes" is one of those great books you can't put down. It tells an unfortunate story about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. He is mistakenly put in a juvenile detention camp when a pair of shoes is reported missing. Every day, Stanley and his fellow law-breakers have to dig a 5-foot wide, 5-foot long, 5-foot deep hole. He is being forced to do this, in the middle of the desert, every day for the next 18 months! One day, his friend, Zero, runs away from camp. This urges Stanley to go and look for him. 3 days later, Stanley goes looking for his friend. Will Stanley find Zero? Will they survive? Read this book and I garuntee you will agree with me!

Summary: A truly wonderful story! by Shane T.
Review: "Holes" is yet another wonderfully written work of fiction by Louis Sachar. This modern tale of fate is set in and around a juvenile detention camp in the Texas wasteland. Stanley Yelnats III is sent there for the theft of a famous baseball player's shoes- even though he is really innocent. Stanley blames his no-good great-grandfather, Stanley Yelnats I, for his constant bad luck. When Stanley's great-grandfather did not keep his word, a curse was put on his family by a psychic named Madame Zeroni. This curse can oly be lifted if Stanley or one of his relatives finds and befriends one of Madame Zeroni's family members. Stanley had never been to a camp before, so his parents tried to convince him that it would be fun. But when Stanley arrived, it wasn't exactly what he had in mind. One had to be careful of snakes, scorpions, and of course, deadly yellow-spotted lizards. Every kid had an odd nickname, and Stanley was given the name "Caveman". Stanley becomes particularly good friendswith a strange boy known only as "Zero". The camp warden requires that every day, each kid has to dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep. If anything unusual is found, it must immediately be reported to her. The reason she give for digging the holes is that "it builds good character," but Stanley can't help but think that the Warden is lookinf for something... This book shows how one can make the best of a bad situation and how things can come together in the end. I recommend this book to anybody interested in a truly suspenseful story, where the "dig" for clues is engaging and fun.

Summary: A very good story, very well read
Review: "Holes" is, by turns, sad, surreal, mysterious, and fun. It's some combination of the Hardy Boys and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's good reading for kids, but involving for adults. I listened to the book on tape, and Kerry Beyer does good vocal characterizations without being intrusive. Well done.

Summary: Deft
Review: "Holes" really is a good book, especially for older boys. It has moments of odd humor and deft use of flashback and parallel stories. My one problem with it is the changing character of Mr. Pendanski the counselor, who starts out nice and suddenly becomes evil. But this is a very enjoyable read.

Summary: A must-read for any age!!!
Review: "Holes" was definitely the best book that I read in all of 1998. Not only is it touching, it is funny and anyone can relate to it. I would recommend this book to anyone....of any age. It's a great story (and has a story within the story). An EXCELLENT choice for the Newbery award.
