Stanley Yelnats, the main character in HOLES by Louis Sachar, goes to camp Greenlake. Yet, camp Greenlake is not a fun camp. In fact it is the exact opposite because it is a camp for juvenile delinquents. The weather at camp Greenlake is brutally hot. In the shade it is 100 degree's, if you can find shade. The only shade at camp Greenlake belong's to the Warden underneath two oak trees, next to a little house with a hammock. This novel takes place in a dried up lake. Many people that go to camp relax and have fun, but the punishment for the boy's at camp Greenlake is work, hard work.Every day the boy's had to dig a hole five feet deep, and five feet wide. Rating: Summary: Holes a review by Peter Review: Have you ever had to dig one hole every day? Some criminal kids in Louis Sachar's book Holes did. In Camp Green Lake, you had to do this every day for eighteen months! The holes had to be five feet deep by five feet across. There was only one rule at this camp: Don't upset the Warden, the person who ran the camp. She had nail polish that was made from extract of snake venom, which she used to threaten people who didn't do what she wanted. The Warden scratched Mr. Sir, the person who ran the camp and his face became swollen. The camp became unsanitary because Mr. Sir couldn't see out of his eyes well enough to clean the camp. One day, Stanley, a boy at the camp, found a gold lipstick cap, with the initials, K.B. engraved on it. He wondered what it stood for. He asked one of the other boys in his tent what to do with it. They said that the Warden would want to see it. Would Stanley keep it from the Warden? Would the Warden find out from another boy what Stanley has? Well, Stanley did keep it from the Warden, but she has her way of knowing things. The plot was very well thought up and I enjoyed the whole thing. I enjoyed it because the protagonist went to very breathtaking places. He climbed "God's Thumb", a giant mountain that looked like a thumb. The plot had a lot of flashbacks and it was like I got lost in time. Stanley Yelnats, the protagonist, was brave and scared. The kids in his tent nicknamed him Caveman because he was big for age. He was brave when he did everything he could to overcome the Warden. He was scared if the Warden would catch him. He was always dusty and dirty from working on the "lake". One of his strengths was digging holes. One of his weaknesses was dealing with the Warden. I feel that Stanley will eventually overcome the Warden. I like that Stanley never gives up easily, but...when the going gets tough, Stanley gets going. I enjoyed this book and I hope you will, too.
Rating: Summary: A good kids book Review: Have you ever had to do dig a hole the height and length of a big shovel every day? Well this kid had to in this book. This book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who goes to a boot camp because he accidentally took a pair of shoes that are worth 10,000 dollars. He has to dig holes every day for his payment. He can leave but it is in the middle of the desert. He made friends with a kid name Zero and he teaches him the alphabet and English if he digs his holes. So is he going to stay in the desert or is he going to leave? I will give Holes a 5 star because it is my favorite book. I will recommend it for boys because it is about a boy. I like the author because he is a funny author and mostly the other books he writes are funny like the Wayside School series. I like the characters because they're funny and the main character has a weird name.
