Rating: Summary: Holes; A Well Written Novel Review: This well written book kept my attention throughout the whole story. It is about a young boy, Stanley Yelnats, who seems to have a run of bad luck in his family. He is an innocent boy sent to a juvenile detention facility to dig holes in the sun all day for doing something he did not do. As the story goes on it seems to be come apparent to Stanley that they are not just digging as a punishment, but to find something unknow to the delinquents at camp Green Lake, which has since dried up and is now the hottest desert in Texas. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a novel with an interesting plot. The book was very well thought out.
Rating: Summary: A Camp Full of Holes Review: This wonderful story, everybody has been talking about, is about a boy names Stanley, who is stuck in a juvenile delinquent camp with some "friends" he has made and is trying to escape because of the way his counselors treat him. This book's name is Holes and is by Louis Scacher. It's about a boy named Stanley who is part of a "bad-luck" family. Stanley is has been accused of stealing from a famous baseball player. When he goes to court- he has two choices of what to do, either go to jail or go to a juvenile delinquent camp called "Camp Green Lake." The problem is, the camp is in the middle of no where. There used to be a lake there, and if you tried to run away you would have to walk 100 miles to the next place that has water. It was his dream to go to a happy, joyful camp. But, his family couldn't afford it. What he really went to is a very hard-working camp. The head of the camp, Mr. Sir, gives Stanley a lecture on what to do at this camp and how to behave. Every day, each boy has to dig a hole- (~5 by 6 feet.) When they were done they could take there two minute shower and lug around in the tent. This book tells of the adventures and attempts of Stanley's get-always of the camp. This book is full of creativity and fun. For example- the names of the campers are nicknames that they gave each other, such as, "Zero", "Caveman", and "X-Ray." This book is easy to understand and great imagining. It is full of creativity, with the plot of the story. Could you have ever come up with such a wild plot like that? A reason someone might not want to read this book is that it's a little confusing and strange. There are two stories going on at once and the book switches off from one to the other. One story is about how Stanley's family turning "bad-luck" and the other is how Stanley survives this horrible camp. At the end they both link together, like a puzzle. Some people might not like this book because, the beginning is a little slow- going and "weird." The book goes by day. Some people I know are reading this book and think it's a little weird. But, as you get into the book it will make more sense. I was younger when I read this book and maybe that's a reason I appreciated this book. Louis Scacher writes extremely unique books and maybe older people won't like them as much as I did. But, this book is great for imagination and I really recommend it. I think if you really try to read this book and pay attention to it will all come together at the end. My mom has just finished reading this book and I remember her asking me, "Why am I reading this book? It's so . . . weird." At the end of the book she said it was very clever and loved it. I can't believe how much fun this book was, also, funny. My dad, sister and I were all reading it at the same time and were fighting over who got to read it at that time. We could never put the book down.
Rating: Summary: A great book! What can I say? ... Review: This: Holes by Louis Sachar is about...why don't you read it and find out? If you have read it, then there's no reason for me to explain. Besides, it's been some time since I read it and I might make mistakes summarizing. That would be boring anyway, so let's move on. It's a great book with a puzzle of a plot that can get slightly old after a while. It's great for a first and second read, though. Third time around you might want to skip some parts. Not too much, though, because a lot happens. The ending was a little too happily-ever-after for me, but it seems okay for other people so it might just be me. That's why I've decided to rate Holes 5 stars. Now, go read it if you haven't. If you already have, go read something else.
Rating: Summary: The Book I almost fell asleep in Review: Title of the book: Holes By: Louis Sachar Reviewed by: S.Choi Period:4 This is a book about a boy that was named Stanely. He got into a mess and had to go to a boot camp sort of thing. In this camp the kids had to dig holes as deep as his shovel and as wide as his shovel all the way around. Stanley, who thought that the camp would be fun, went without knowing that he was not going to like the camp. Well, how he got there in the first place was a mix-up. He did not do any crime, but was asumed a crime that he had never done. I disliked this book because it was going from the past to the present and I got confused many times. For example he would tell me about the past and suddenly it was in the present again. It was not really fun and I actually slept after I started to read the book. It was too detailed and too confusing for me to go through the book. It was worse then my worst book, which I only read a page. I read this book all because I thought it would get better, but it really did not. I thought the setting was extremely good even though the story was confusing. The setting was in the desert where there was no life, but a small area where there was the camp house. I liked it when it described the wheather and how the person described the feeling of digging in the got sun which completely could have burned every single boy's back. I also liked it when the author told of Stanley's letter when he sent it to his parents. It was like the author knew how a kind and educated boy would act. My favorite part in this story was when Stanly was figuring out a clue with Zero. Zero was a boy that couldn't read or write. The digging was because of the past. They found out where the money was and they got it from the stories that were told to Stanely. When I read the book this was the only part I was awake in.
Rating: Summary: fall in the hall of Louis Sachar Review: To be honest, none of you out there like reading textbooks and novels that your teachers assign you right? (Nod your head. so this is when you throw away those and start to look for something else that will actually entertain you, like this book, holes. Stanley Yelnats is cursed because his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great-great-grandfather, a curse was given from a fortune teller, Madame Zeroni, the curse was the Yelnats family and the offspring. One day while Stanley was walking home, a pair of stinky shoes fell on him, so he brought it home, his dad at the moment was thinking a use of old shoes, so he took the pair of shoe as a experiment too; but by accident, the shoe that fell from the sky burned up and causing awful odor. Their neighbors come in rage and ask them to clean up the mess or else they will have to move. Later on day Stanley was arrested by the police due to the fact that the shoes belong to a famous basketball player, Stanley was accused for stealing them. So the Yelnats family had a couple of contestations, and they came to a agreement that Stanley Yelnats has to be sent to Camp Green lake, a place for kids to have some introspection over things that they had done, but instead of sitting in a dirty cage and wait for the day your are released, you dig holes everyday, a hole that 5 foot long in diameter and 5 foot deep, the truth is that the warden is looking for something underground, in the camp, Standley made many friends. Zigzag, Magnet, X-ray, Armpit, Zero, and Squid are all kids at camp Green Lake, some of them cheated on a test, some of them stole something, they were all pretty friendly to Stanley and made friends wit him. In all Stanley¡¦s friends, his closest friend was zero, a kid that was caught by stealing a pair of shoes, he cant read or write, so people called he zero because he knows absolutely nothing. Stanley in order to get some rest, exchange with zero that, if he digs his hole for him, Stanley would teach him how to read and write, one day the two of them decided to run away from camp because they cant stand it anymore, but after they fled they soon regret, because they are in a barren desert with no water and food, they know they eventually have to return to camp Green Lake, but as they are on their way to the ¡§big thumb mountain¡¨ secrets began to reveal, on the way Zero was almost dead but he was saved after they arrived at big thumb mountain, because there was water and unlimited onions lying in the ground, want to know what happened and what¡¦s the secret to the warden and the treasure? Read the book! I find this book touching because it¡¦s well use of vocabulary and the well planned plot, there where flash backs in the book that gives the reader a new perspective to the book, I feel the book is easy to understand and people of all ages should read it, I give it a five star! Good job Louis Sachar!!
Rating: Summary: Never judge a book by its cover! Review: Trust me, when I saw this on the book of the Newberry Winners, I was thinking.. "What kind of award-winning book would be about diging holes?".. but I thought if it won the award, it should be good since it picks out the best of the best. This was an excellent book and shows the relationship that can spark between two totally different people. The book is about exactly whats on the cover, digging holes. Stanley goes to a camp as a punishment and must dig holes everyday ending up being the slowest hole digger. Th book changes into a suspenful action type book when he tries to find out what the real reason for all this was and helps a 'kid that never talks' on the way and sparks a relation with him.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: Two words great book! Weather your 8 or 108 everyone will love this book! Even though there is two stories going on it might be alittle hard to read for the youngesters. Just buy it!
Rating: Summary: Just Plane Awful ! Review: Ugh! This book was awful. I mean I loved Harry Potter books but I hate this book. It was ok, I guess but all it was about was a kid going to a camp and having to dig a hole every day.If your looking for a nice long book do not get this one it only took me 2 days to read.
Rating: Summary: good Review: um read i
Rating: Summary: Breaking the mold Review: Unlike many children's books, Holes does not assume that the reader is too young to understand serious concerns and public issues. A complex story with parallels between the lives of the unlucky Stanley Yelnats, the wild Kissin' Kate Barlow, the Zeroni family, and a pair of very smelly shoes, Holes brings up issues that children can and do understand. Racism, greed, punishment, honesty, and corrupt authority are all big parts of the story. At it's base, however, it is a tale of friendship and of believing in one's self. Two thumbs up!
