Rating: Summary: Good but not Great! Review: STORY: Stanley Yelants IV is wrongly accused of a petty crime and sent to Camp Green Lake juvenial facility to work out his term. At this camp, that is neither green nor has a lake, he finds friendship, self-confidence, and dreams.MY FEEDBACK 1) SETTING - unique setting the allowed for easy conflict and a great backdrop for characters to build relationships with each other. Very nicely done. 2) CHARACTERS - I felt a little let down here. After reading all the other reviews my expectations were really high. And once I read the book I only felt a liking for Stanley and Zero but not really the other cast of characters. The biggest reason why I liked Stanley and Zero is for the friendship elements that reminded me of the movie Stand By Me. BUT Stanley as the main protagonist doesn't seem to go through a very large amount of change as a person...thus I'm confused why people think it is more than a good read and should be treated like a great read. 3) STORY - There are actually two story lines that in the last few pages of the book merge together into present time. One story line has to do with how the area of Camp Green Lake came to be and the history and mystery of the characters and events around that. The second story line is as mentioned...the story of Stanley in his juvenial prison. It was nice that things came together and linked together towards the end but I didn't feel it had the same emotional rush as when I read The Giver by Lois Lowry. OVERALL - A good read but not so great that I have to rush out and see the movie. Very easy read, because I finished this in like two or three hours. The book is good enough that you won't waste your time if you pick this one up.

Rating: Summary: Digging up a good book Review: SUMMARY: Stanley had apparently caused a great deal of trouble and when given the choice by the judge choose spending his sentence at Camp Green Lake over jail. Stanley was of a poor family and had never been too camp before, it turns out however, that Camp Green Lake is not the type of camp that the rich boys spend there summers at. As punishment at this camp each boy must dig one hole a day, 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide. The temperatures on this gigantic dried lake bed in Texas are blistering. There is no use in running because there is no water for a hundred miles in any direction, or at least this is what the dictators at camp tell Stanley. As Stanley serves his sentence he becomes more and more aware of the corrupt leadership at Camp Green Lake. There is nothing for stanley to do but fight the days while digging up even more questions too boggle his adventure. Stanley knows that even after he leaves this camp the emotional damage will be be un bearing and he will be left too fill in the holes on his own. COMMENTS: Not being much of a reader I was surprised too have found this book so amusing! The fact that "Holes" is a holder of the national book award surely speaks for itself, but being iside stanleys thoughts as he partakes in this adventure is a feeling you need to experience for yourself. Dont take it from me, read the story and maybe you will be able to help Stanley fill in the holes.
Rating: Summary: Get the Book Review: Summer camp is supposed to be a fun place for kids, not in Stanley yelnuts case. Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys,Stanley was there because he stole a pair of shoes from clide livingston. At camp Green Lake the boys there have to dig holes for there punishment. The bad thing about camp Green Lake was that there is no water anywhere accept for at the camp. The worst animal at the camp was a yellow spotted lizard. If you havent read this book check it out!!!!
Rating: Summary: Summer Camp--Sounds Like Fun, Right? Review: Summer camp, for most children, is what they look forward to. Not according to Stanley Yelnats. Stanley is a typical teenage boy that got accused of stealing a famous athletes shoes. His punishment--summer camp at Camp Green Lake. This wasn't the typical summer camp. This camp involoved digging holes in the middle of the desert--for what reason?? Punishment?? Not really...Stanley and some of his buddies find out the REAL truth about Camp Green Lake. This book not only tells the story of Stanley's camp experience, but it goes back in time--the way things used to be and how Camp Green Lake was created!! I would reccommend this book for children ages 11-18 (or older). I'm twenty-nine years old and I LOVED it!! It is very humorous, serious, and gives the reader a sense of living in the "olden days."

Rating: Summary: Jay Fic's Payback Review: Take a lead character who happens to be a criminal of sorts...have the lead character encounter characters who are even more brutal or evil then our lead character...stick him in a bad situation and you have a fascinating book.... As I was reading this...I kept thinking about the latest Mel Gibson movie "Payback"...you end up rooting for the bad guy...and then sympatize for him... a simple book with a multi layered plot...
Rating: Summary: EXTRA ORDINARY READ! Review: Talk about an out of the ordinary read! A boy digging holes? How original is that? Between Zero, Stanley, and the 100 year old curse, what could happen? It all begins when Stanley gets hit in the head with a pair of famous baseball player's shoes. Then all the fun begins. You ask, what fun? Well, like the crazy landlord, Mr. Sir, Armpit, and worst of all, Juvenile Detention Center. But Stanley is NOT staying in ANY jail for long! He teams up with his friend, Zero and escapes! Water is sacred at the camp, because it is in the desert . So when they escape, they realize they have no water, so they have to use onions as a resource! The reason why I read this story is easy. It is full of action, and the best thing of all is it doesn't bore you! All the characters have an attitude of their own. Their reputation is not always bad. In fact, most of them you might want to be friends with! I picked HOLES up and read it in less than a day! I strongly encourage you to read this book! It is one of a kind! p.s. So, what are you waiting for? Go out and find HOLES! Even if it takes juvenile jail, shortage of water....
