Rating: Summary: Kid's point of view Review: Recently in my seventh grade class my teacher read Holes to us. She would read a chapter or two every day and when she stopped everyone pleaded with her to keep going. It was so good we did all of our other work quickley so she could get to Holes and read somemore. But sometimes she would be reading and have to stop and explain what was happening and how everything entertwined to a few people. It was even a little hard for some 12 and 13 year olds to grasp at times, but we still thought it was awesome. Louis Sachar did a very good job on this double story writing it so everything and everyone in it had a reason for being there. I recommend it to all people who don't mind taking the time to stop and think over what's happening and why, while they're reading.
Rating: Summary: this was an above average book Review: Review of Holes From the day that Stanley Yelnats' "dirty rotten grandfather"stole the old pig of Madam Zeroni, the gypsy, his family was cursed with bad luck. He thinks that's what lead to his arrest. He was brought to Camp Green Lake after a pair of Clyde Livingston's old shoes fell from the sky. He picked them up, and since his father was working on a way to recycle old shoes, he thought it was a gift from god. Actually, Clyde's shoes fell from a truck that was going to help needy kids. Police found him, and he was accused of stealing the shoes. Then he got to Camp Green Lake, the hottest, most desolate place he's ever been. There he met Hector Zeroni (Zero), X-ray, Armpit, Barfbag, and more. A true all-star cast. I thought this was an excellent book. The characters were very developed, the surroundings were very realistic, the situations Stanley and Zero faced were very intense, the book was somewhat humorous, and the book just didn't go in sequence, it went back in the past even if you were in the middle of the book. THE END By, Erik Lackey

Rating: Summary: A delightfully quirky tale Review: Sachar has created an amazing and interesting cast of characters in Holes. Quirky, offbeat, and downright bizarre people punctuate the plot which moves along in a most unpredictable way. The story twists and turns in time and yet is neatly woven together. A fun read.
Rating: Summary: "Spectacular" Review: Sachar is wonderful! Every book I have read by him was wonderful! This was the best one yet for sure! This book was puzzling, yet had a great meaning! A must-read book!
Rating: Summary: Suitable book for all Review: Sachar's book is suitable for both male and female readers. Readers as young as ten or eleven can enjoy Holes. Likewise, readers thirteen or fourteen years old could still find the story relevant and entertaining. This Newbery book is predictably very safe. Surely, no one can object to anything said or done in Sachar's book. Relevant social issues make this book a good one for whole class instruction. Students will easily internalize this story and make countless connections with characters and plots. This story is intriguing- a little sentimental- but intriguing. Stanley is everyone's woe-is-me poor self-esteem. The plot is a delightfully plain and simple mystery. The conclusion brings the good fortune in this lifetime to both Stanley and Zero.
Rating: Summary: HOW DIM WITTED CAN YOU BE? Review: SEND A KID TO THE DESERT TO DIG HOLES FIVE FEET WIDE BY FIVE FEET DEEP? DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY? WHO'S GOING TO BELIEVE THIS? ALRIGHT, MAYBE AFTER HARRY POTTER WE COULD BELIEVE THIS FANTASY BUT REALLY...WHATEVER HAPPENED TO REAL BOOKS?
Rating: Summary: Holes Review: Set in Camp Green Lake is a boys' detention center. There is a wild twist, there is no water at Camp Green Lake. Everyday and any day all the boys dig a hole that is five feet deep by five feet wide in Every direction. They did this under the boiling hot sun with only a canteen of water that was filled up every once in a while. The main character, Stanley Yelnats, believes his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great grandfather" has cursed him. He believes this because he has been accused of stealing a pair of shoes from that once belonged to Clyde Livingston from a salvation army. Because of this accusation, Stanley has to go to court. The Judge gave him the Choice of going to jail or Camp Green Lake. Stanley had never been to camp before and thinks it sounds like fun. He is in for a rude awakening. Throughout the book, Stanley realizes that the Warden, the camp leader, is not only making the boys dig to build character, but to find something. One day Stanley finds a lipstick cap with the Initials "KB" on it. Stanley gave it to his friend, X-Ray, because he promises he will give anything he found to him. X-Ray then gives it to their counselor, Mr. Pendanski. Mr. Pendanski shows it to the Warden. The Warden thinks the boys found it in X-Ray's hole, and they really found it in Stanley's hole. The Warden made everyone dig X-Ray's hole deeper and wider. This book is a "puzzle to be completed." With its extraordinary characters and its exciting events, you will be taken on an unforgettable wild adventure. The moral of this story is very concise. Everyone who needs to learn the importance of being a good person read this book by Louis Sachar.
