Rating: Summary: Kelly's Review on Holes Review: I'am doing my review on the book HOLES by Louis Sachar. The book leaves you wanting to read it over and over agian. Holes is humorous, yet suspencful. The way it was written makes you want to never put it down. Holes takes place in a big dried up lake called Greenlake. But, one lady turned it into camp Greenlake for kids who are bad. The main characters are Stanly who is a boy who always had bad luck. Zero who is a boy who doesn't talk to often . The Warden the owner of Camp Greenlake. Holes is mostly about a boy who has bad luck and just happend to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has to go to camp Greenlake and meets new people and learns a mystery about his past. Read HOLES its a really good book!
Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Hole Review: I'd like to start off saying that I am not a huge fan of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye (it does have it's place in Literature, but that's not to be addressed here). Catcher in the Rye is supposed to be that one-great-coming-of-age stories for older teenaged boys. Holes, by the witty Sachar, is a Catcher in the Rye for younger boys just starting off into their teen years. The characters and story are whimsical and well-plotted like nothing in real life, but there is an undeniable and honest truth to the underlying theme of this story. It's a complicated tale that parents and children (male or female here) should really read together. The reading is easy enough; I don't mean "complicated" in the "hard" sense. This story just has so many wonderful overlapping layers that I could not put it down. It took me but one day to finish this book and I probably skipped a college class because I couldn't put it down. That's right, folks, I'm twenty-one and proud to admit that this is my favorite book. I only wish I had a story like this to latch onto when I was a young adolescent. Alas, we only had Catcher in the Rye, and that is not my idea of a reasonable coming-of-age story for the younger set. Holes definitely is.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book Review: I'm 11 years old and i thought that this book was absolutely terrific!!! I'm ging to be freaked out about lizards for the rest of my life. THe ending was terrific. I reccomended this book to all of my friends. Very glad it won the NEwbury.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic read, and not just for kids! Review: I'm 17, and I loved this book. My sisters, aged 14 and 11, both loved this book. The story encompasses over 100 years, and its breadth and the way it shifted back and forth reminded me sometimes of _Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe_. It reads like a modern fairy tale in its use of language, its larger than life yet somehow not unbelievable characters, the twists and turns of the story, and the obvious inevitability of _everything_ that happens. Every word makes you think "Of course..." as the story is unveiled, layer by layer, like an onion being peeled.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, Louis Sachar does it again! Review: I'm 22, an avid reader or children's literature and was suprised at how intelligent this novel was. Growing up, I didn't have a lot of money, so now, as I read these novels, and the latest Newberry's, it's good to see that among a lot of trash that is being published, there still is high quality writing out there. I'm glad that this was chosen for a Newberry. I never once found this book boring and I will recommend it to my future students and younger family members.
Rating: Summary: An Instant Classic!! Louis Sachar is a storytelling artist! Review: I'm 29 and purchased Holes for my friend's 10 year old son. I decided to read it before giving it to him to make sure it was a good pick. I was not disappointed!! Sachar can really weave a story together. This book is better written than most of the adult bestsellers on the market and, yet, its a book that will instantly capture the attention of any child. The way Sachar links Stanley Yelnats' dilemma/adventure with the wild and wonderful past of Camp Green Lake is pure imagination at its finest! Sachar has also mastered the art of rationing out just the right amount of information at just the right time to keep the reader on the edge of his seat. There is a surprise at every turn! Although I had my suspicious about what Stanley would find if he dug enough holes at Camp Green Lake, this book was anything but predictable. Reading it was pure joy and I was sorry, upon finishing it, to leave behind the wonderful characters. Children of all ages love being read to and this book is a perfect choice for parents/teachers to enjoy with their kids! I wish there were more contemporary adult writers who could spin as original a tale as Holes.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book for adults and kids both. Review: I'm a 37 year old picky reader, and I loved this book. I see that lots of other adults love it too. It was recommended to me by my son, who says it's his new favorite. This is the second book we've both shared with enthusiasm, the other being SIGHTS BY SUSANNA VANCE. Both are exciting literature with huge voice!
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've read in years!!! Review: I'm a twelve year-old boy, and when I first heard about this book, I was dissapointed. I didn't think a story about a boy who went to a detention camp would be very exciting. But soon, I realized there was alot more to the book than that, and I was sucked in to an amazing plot that had me hanging on every word!!!! Stanley is an overweight kid, who is almost cursed with bad luck. And when he is sent to a detention camp, and forced to dig holes every day, 5 feet wide and 5 feet long in a dryed up lake, he knows something is wrong...that his punishment wasn't just a punishment...but a mind boggling mystery... I loved this book! I recomend it to everyone! A book that will keep you enthraled, and interested. With an evil villiness, and a WONDERFULY shaped plot, you'll get your moneys worth!!! GET THIS BOOK NOW! You will never forget it!!!!!
