Rating: Summary: one of my favorite kid books ever! Review: I shouldn't say kid book - this book isn't just for kids. I am 22 years old and I love this story. I WISH that this book was around when I was younger! This is the story about a boy named Stanley who's family has been cursed since his great-grandfather. Stanley's father is an inventor who has been trying to invent the cure for foot odor for years but to no avail. Stanley gets wrongly accused of stealing a pair of sneakers and gets put in a juvenille correctional "camp" ... But this "camp" is in the middle of the dessert and run by the meanest warden you could imagine. Here Stanley and the rest of the boys are made to DIG HOLES. that's right. they don't do anything but DIG HOLES in the middle of the burning hot dessert. Stanley makes a friend -but mostly enemies - and he thinks that he is going to be cursed forever --- until the pieces of this complex puzzle start to come together and Stanley inadvertanly finds a way to lift the curse off his family. This book is truly amazing. A great story with an excellent back story. Realistic, lovable, and deep characters. Fast paced plot. Great reading for all ages!
Rating: Summary: It became a family affair! Review: I started reading Holes to my 7 year old son, and after only 2 nights my whole family was perched on my sons' bed eagerly listening to all the neat twists and turns of this fun book. Pretty amazing for a family with a 14 year old, a 12 year old, and a 7 year old! We have now started a new family ritual of reading together every night.....Thanks Mr. Sachar! (p.s. My husband and I got a kick out of the book too.)
Rating: Summary: Antidote for Christmas Overload Review: I started reading this book to my 9-year-old grandson two days after Christmas. His 6-year-old brother joined us, and they both abandoned Legos, Pokemon and battery-operated race cars to insist that I keep reading until the book was finished (about 9 p.m. the same day). The plot is complicated, funny and heartbreaking -- with characters that go back five generations and a setting in the Texas desert that's both believable and scary enough to entrance the most jaded kids. I loved this book and Stanley Yelnats' bravery, loyalty and developing maturity. If my grandsons hadn't been interested, I would have finished reading it to myself the same day without them. (But it was a lot more fun doing it together.)You should read Holes out loud to your kids!
Rating: Summary: COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!! Review: I started reading this book to my children and after they fell asleep I stayed up until midnight to finish it. It was that good. The book has many twists and turns and is also easy to read. It has all the requirements of a 5 star book. It is interesting, easy-to-read, and most of all entertaining. If you get a chance pick it up and read it. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: U won't want it to end! Review: I stayed up until 3:00 am reading this book. I recommended this book for ANY age.
Rating: Summary: The book helled lots of emotional thoughts Review: I strongly suggest that any reader that has just read this book think about what this author is trying to say. It holds lots of thoughts.
Rating: Summary: Digging Up Holes in The Pages Reading The Book Over and Over Review: I suggest anyone who likes adventure, comedy, and drama to read this book! I've never seen the movie but I suggest you read the book first. I saw the previews for the movie and thought it looked horrible, but the book, is one of the best books I've ever read! I love how it all connects in the end (PART THREE), and how Zero and Stanley are happy in the end. So, go out and buy that book!
Rating: Summary: The diggest of diggest book Review: I suppose you ought to read Holes. It is outstanding! I like the center part. My preferred part is when it is Over and done with because Stanley is free of charge. Stanley has to dig holes 5 feet tall and five feet deep. Stanley meets another Boy named Zero. Zero gets so mad that He hits Mr. Pendancekey in the face with a shovel.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Instructional Tool Review: I taught this book to inner-city seventh graders last year and I couldn't believe the response. My students couldn't wait to rush in my classroom and pick up a book. These are the same kids who we have to pull teeth to get to read anything! Ironically, even reading it as an adult the book made me think.
Rating: Summary: Reading Holes Review: I teach 6th grade Language Arts/Social Studies and am currently reading Holes to my class as a Read-Aloud. I find it a perfect book for middle schoolers as it presents wonderful character development and the literary element of flash-back. The kids learn a lot as they enjoy.
