Rating: Summary: Buy this book for your kids but be sure to read it yourself! Review: I purchased this book for my niece and then borrowed it back to read. It's a great story about good versus evil, the haves against the have-nots. Sure it's for kids but it's like a Disney movie in that it has something for the adults as well. The end even has a couple of twists that may surprise you. Trust me, read it and you will feel good afterwards. We all need short excursions away from reality. For a longer "trip" read I Am One of You Forever by Fred Chappell

Rating: Summary: Holes is a book that must be read Review: I read "Holes" by Louis Sachar. The main character's name is Stanley Yelnats IV. Stanley is accused of stealing shoes, and is sent to a juvenile detention center, Camp Green Lake. Although the camp sounds great, there is no lake. Camp Green Lake doesn't need any security because it is set up in the middle of a desert. Trying to escape would be suicide. At Camp Green Lake, every day Stanley must dig a hole that is five feet wide and five feet deep to "build character." When Stanley arrives at the camp, he is put in D-Tent where he meets his new camp companions. Everyone in D-Tent has a nickname, Zero, X-Ray, Armpit, Squid, Magnet, and Zigzag. Stanley is nicknamed Caveman. Stanley Yelnats has many adventures at Camp Green Lake, especially with his new best friend, Zero. Zero and Stanley go through many mental and physical obstacles at camp together, and they must work hard to get through them. Especially with the evil warden and Mr. Sir watching closely. I really enjoyed reading this book. The author, Louis Sachar, perfectly describes the story and was able to create the picture in my head. Louis Sachar managed to add in a lot of humor throughout the story. I also liked how Louis Sachar gave me enough description to know the story in detail, but left enough out to allow my imagination to create part of the story. On page 106, Louis Sachar describes water falling to the ground in the perfect amount of detail. "Mr. Sir opened the nozzle, and the water flowed out of the tank, but it did not go into Stanley's canteen. Instead, he held the canteen right next to the stream of water. Stanley watched the water splatter on the dirt, where it was quickly absorbed by the thirsty ground." I also like the personification used in that quote. Louis Sachar puts so much color and picture into his words that it is easy to imagine the whole book, as if I was watching a movie. The theme of this book isn't very obvious. It could be, "If you want something bad enough and you work hard enough to get there, you will eventually be there at the end." I do agree with this theme. Mostly every life situation falls under this theme. This book relates to me because I am like Stanley. When Stanley arrived at the camp, he had a hard time making new friends. When I moved to Virginia I was the same way. I would definitely recommend this book to others. It is a Newberry Award Winner. You should read it if you enjoy adventure books. The only problem was that it was kind of childish. I really enjoyed Holes, but after I was finished, I realized that I should have read a higher reading level book. I would not recommend this book for a graded assignment, but if you happen to have some free time, it is definitely the right book to pick up.
Rating: Summary: by Shane Craig Review: I read "Holes" for a book report in school. I thought it was a pretty good book. The main character was Stanley Yelnats. He was falsely accused of a crime and was sent to Camp Greenlake, a detention camp for boys. He had to dig a 5 foot by 5 foot hole everyday. He soon realized that he wasn't just digging to build character , but that the warden was looking for something. He made a very good friend while he was there and risked his life to help him.Together they solved the mystery of Camp Greenlake. This was a story I would recommend.
Rating: Summary: EVEN BETTER THAN HARRY POTTER? Review: I read about 20 books out loud to my kids every year, and this one is my favorite from the past year. Fascinating characters and amazing coincidences made this a page-turner. The kids begged me to keep reading until my voice was hoarse!
Rating: Summary: Holes Review: I read Holes as a Read-Aloud with my 4th grade students last year. My students were extremely into the book and always complained when we would stop reading. It is suspensful and full of surprises, all of which will keep a young reader interested in the climax and solution. Awsome for all ages and makes a wonderful gift!
