Summary: This Collection is Well Worth the Money
Review: I would normally never recommend that someone spend 60 dollars on four hardcover books when they are so easily available in paperback. However, this is different. With these books every person in the family is going to read them over and over, creating the risk of the books getting torn or ripped if they are paperbacks.

All four books are excellent and even adults will look forward to coming home after their 9 to 5 troubles to read about Harry's adventures with his friends at Hogwarts school. They are that intriguing. So if you have the means and funds spend the money, get the collection and it enjoy it for years to come.

Summary: I was disappointed...
Review: I went into reading this series and seeing the movie thinking I would totally be blown away, because I'd heard so much about it. It really isn't anything spectacular at all. It's fantasy, which I'll always have a love for, but the plot is predictable and the characters are bland. There are many other fantasy books and movies that are better. I'm not saying HP is bad, or don't read it or see the movie, just don't buy the hype. This is nothing you haven't seen before. Everything about this series is completely overrated.

Summary: Buy and burn these horrible books!
Review: If you buy these books it would just be a waste of money. For one thing there are going to be seven books and there is only four books in this set so wait for the horrible set of seven.

Second these books are the worst books in the entire word! The first had story but then on they were horrible! Burn these books. Please vote for me.

Summary: Wonderful, Addicting!... and not just for kids!
Review: I was skeptical about Harry Potter when my wife insisted I read it. I was amazed at how wonderful the book was! This is not just a childrens book. And as the books go on they get better and more advanced. I love them all. Wonderfully written and addicting. A must to anyone who has a heart for magic and mystery.

Summary: One of the best boxed sets ever.
Review: The Harry Potter books are enchanting and wonderful, and there are much better reviews of their content both for this item and elsewhere on Amazon. This is a review of the boxed set itself, its presentation and condition. I'm writing it this way because I find it a gamble myself to purchase a good boxed set. You often never know what will arrive in that box. With this one I was made very happy.

Admittedly, I was very surprised. The books are printed on high quality paper. They are the hardcovers (not first edition no) but wonderful nonetheless. Very sturdy books indeed, these will last for generations if cared for. The quality is far superior than other hardcover books I've purchased as of late -- my preferred medium for books by my favorite authors.

The box itself is very sturdy. You have to work to crush it; it's cardboard after all. The illustrations on the sides makes one proud to display it. The box supports the books, as opposed to cheaper, flimsier boxed sets where the books support the box.

The icing on the cake was that mine came with two limited edition bookmarks, which really was thoughtful. I bought this from Amazon on November 29, 2001, so I don't know if ALL the boxed sets at the time of this reveiw contain them. However, this was a nice touch I wish all book sets would include, since with hardcovers of high-quality, you do NOT want to dog-ear the pages. It's lovely to have a set of bookmarks to keep with the tomes, as it enhances the value greatly of having the entire set match.

All-in-all, a great buy for great value. If you need the Harry Potter books, definetly get them in this set if you can help it at all.

Review: Great books! The magic is wearing off, however, since the movie and all the hype.

Review: Excellent, excellent books. I am not usually a fan of
fantasy children books, but I wanted to read these before letting my children go to the movie. Great decision on my end. I'm hooked now!!!rowling has great depth to her books and develops her characters excellently! Before you start these make sure you have plenty of time because once you start you won't want to put any of these down!

Summary: Mindless reading.
Review: If you want an airplane read, pick up The Onion. If you want books to give your children, consider these others first: Watership Down; A Wrinkle in Time; Alice in Wonderland; Chronicles of Narnia; The Hobbit. All of these books are written to entertain as well as to invoke thoughtfulness. They are classics because they work with timeless themes. They are children's classics because they are accessible to the young.

It's not enough to simply get children to read. A good book can also get them to think about what it means to be human. Harry Potter fails to do what all great books do: to examine the complexity of human relationships with others, with nature, and with the unknown. A quick comparison with Tolkien's masterpiece shows Rowling's biggest weakness as a fantasy writer. The Lord of the Rings allows the heroes to be susceptible to temptation. It works on the level of allegory to paint an epic of individual human struggle against self-centeredness. Harry Potter doesn't struggle with his ego. Ever. He's an orphan who becomes rich and goes to prep school, where he makes all the right decisions and wins every time. One doesn't feel for Rowling's characters because they have no human complexity. Humans aren't even humans in Rowling's world. They're Muggles.

Rowling also fails in her portrayal of magic. It has long been understood in the wiccan community that all magic, "good" or "bad," has unintended reprecussions. In Lord of the Rings, the One Ring makes characters invisible, but it also wastes them away until they become invisible for eternity, ghosts walking the earth. Even the makers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer understand the fundamental principle that anything you do with magic can cause harm. Harry Potter, by contrast, wears his invisibility cloak without ever fearing the reprecussions, because there are no reprecussions. He is invincible and, as a result, seems more spoiled than heroic. Again, in a very important way, Rowling's world is simplistic and fails to reflect in any way the compexity what it means to be human, let alone a young human.

Summary: Harry Potter - books 1-3
Review: I can only give a review on the first three books; however, I am on the prowl for the fourth as we speak. At 24 years old, I also had to see what the hype was about. I sat down and read the first one in about 4 hours, I could not put it down. Rowlings does an excellent job of putting you into a world of fantasy that is refreshing to read no matter what your age. I have been reading fantasy for years, usually R.A. Salvatore, but Harry Potter is just as much fun to read.

For those who say it's a waste for older people are very wrong, not only does it give your mind a break from the real world, all reading helps. Isn't that what schools try to teach, that reading is fun? Why should adults only read what people call "advanced books". I say read what you like and enjoy it.

For parents who are concerned about the relation with witchcraft, I can honestly say there is no relation. I have been studying, not practicing, witchcraft for years, It is no where near the same thing. Harry Potter may be a "religion" to some, but not in that sense. Wicca is a serious religion that should not be confused with Rowlings HP fairly tales.

HP is a wonderful tool for children ( and adults), once a reader, always a reader.
