Summary: Harry is magnificent
Review: When Harry is about 8 years old he finds out that he is a very special boy with unique gifts. This is his ticket to a special school for wizards. When he arrives, although he is made fun of because of his strange odor, he seems to get along fine. This was very inspiring to me because other kids used to make fun of me because of my subpar aroma. This book helped me get through the day, and by the end of school, with the help of prescripton deoderant, i was able to make it through

Summary: The Best Ever!
Review: These are my all time favorite books, and that's saying a lot. I've read about 600. The way this lady writes is excellent, the plot is so believable, and a lot of his troubles so everyday, that nobody could possibly hate it. I've read every single one of these books 7 times, and when the fifth book comes out I will read them all again!

Summary: Fabulous Books!!!
Review: When the first Harry Potter book came out, I didn't really pay to much attention. I just kept hearing about it every day in the news or on the radio. Curiousity got the best of me and I bought the first one.
Wow! These are great books. I think it wonderful if kids are into this. The last book is fairly large and I'm impressed that kids are reading it. These books are so fun to read. I'm 25 years old and I cannot wait for the next one to come out. If you're an adult and think that these are just for kids, they're not. They're an escape from everyday life. They put that little bit of magic back into life.

Summary: Will The Next One Be Different?
Review: Rowling introduces us to Hogwart's school for magic and follows the life of a young magician, Harry Potter. His parents were killed when he was young by a evil sorcerer. I must say I loved the first Harry Potter book, I even enjoyed the second. However, I think it is time for Rowling to think up a new plot. When I read Harry Potter 3 & 4 I felt like Rowling is trying to convert Sherlock Holmes medeival style. I know there are few authors out there who can write sequels with originality, but come on. I do not argue that Rowling's books are well written and characters clearly developed, but the plot is getting redundant. I know the art Rowling is capable of, I saw it in the first book, where is it at now??? I mean, come on, at the end of the third book I felt like I was at the end of a very freaky Scooby Doo show where everybody's masks were being torn off. I enjoyed all the books but too many more without originality and I may not be able to stand it.

Summary: Refreshing Fantasy Series
Review: I was one of those that resisted the hype. It didn't take until watching the Sorceror's Stone that I decided to read it for sure. Now, I'm re-reading the series for the 3rd time, and I even bought tickets early to guarantee a seat in the theater Nov 15 to watch Chamber of Secrets. However, even before I read the series, I saw the controversy it made and shook my head at how people can be so narrow-minded.

I think of the reasons that I resisted reading these books is that I'm used to reading the tomes of Robert Jordan and George RR Martin. Martin, especially, is high-level reading and I thought that Harry Potter would be too easy to read. I apologize for my arrogance, such as it was, but actually after reading them, I'm glad for the straight-forward brand of literature that JK Rowling authors. It's very fun reading, with well-rounded characters. The heroes are not all perfect. They make mistakes and are sometimes less than stellar in their treatment of others. However, far from being a weakness, this a strength because they are realistic. Voldemort is still mysterious to me as to how he travelled so far down the morality abyss. I trust that we'll know this in the next 3 books.

If I have any criticisms, it's that the Dursleys seem a little bit too cruel. Some of their acts towards Harry are rather over-reactionary. Perhaps they're an allegorical element of the books. It does appear that JK Rowling has disdain for narrow-minded people. The Dursleys fit that bill, as do the Malfoys. But whereas the Malfoys are evil, the Dursleys are more amoral or too set in their ways rather than evil.

Another criticism is the fact that all Malfoys over many years went to Slytherin, and Weasleys to Gryffindor. This bothers me, because it implies that neither family has anyone that deviates from their family. That is unrealistic. Why not a younger brother of Draco that doesn't like what his father and older brother believe in? And I believe that Percy is more suited to Ravenclaw than Gryffindor.

All this said, I still believe it's a well-written set of books, especially for a first-time author. There are plot twists, and enough detail to make you imagine the action going on in your mind. However, to some of those that think this is meant for anyone younger than 11-12, I disagree. Though I think more ambitious readers of those younger ages can easily comprehend the books, I believe Azkaban and Goblet of Fire especially are more suited for ages 12 and up. There is alot of scary stuff in the last two books. Things that I'm not sure are suitable for younger children. This doesn't take away from the books at all. They are still enjoyable reading, filled with imagination and wit.

Summary: Some Alternatives
Review: I'm not an expert on Harry Potter, as I have found the writing to be below average and the whole phenomenon to be a boor. However, it is certainly a positive thing to encourage children to read, and if your child is more inteligent than average I would recommend "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien, or "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis as superior fictional substitutes to J.K Rowling's work.

Summary: Harry Potter Paperback Box Ser
Review: I loved the Harry Potter books. I find the idea of magic, set in the real world fascinating. These books are definitely worth reading. Another very good book of a similar nature that you should read if you like Harry Potter books is Herckamer and the Tale of the Trees.
