Rating: Summary: I can't imagine why this is a classic Review: Everyone told us we had to get this book and someone even bought it for us at our shower. Neither my husband nor I can figure out why this is such a classic. It is inane. Ridiculous. No cute story, no message, not even a good rhyme. Millions of people have been hoodwinked in to buying this book. Please, save your money.
Rating: Summary: Getting my son to bed just got easier Review: It seems like every American child is raised on this book. Being from New Zealand, I came to it late, but now it's part of my 2 year old's nightly routine. The illustrations are capivating with lots of detail to keep me interested (the moon moves up the sky, the mouse moves around the room), and the rhythm of the text is very soothing. This book seems to hypnotise my son to sleep each night - I love it!
Rating: Summary: Just for very little children... Review: Thinking on my seven years old child, I bought this book. When I received the book, I found it very simple; it has no more then 10 words per page and my son finished it very quickly. It is not a bad book, but it is very simple.
Rating: Summary: Know It By Heart Review: My 3 year old son and I love this book! We know it by heart now. We read it almost every night! It has a simple format and cute illustrations. I highly recommend this fun book!
Rating: Summary: Best Toddler Book EVER Review: This is absolutely, bar none, the best book for toddlers. My two year old finally started to speak, in imitation of it, once we started reading this. I warn you against the sequel/companion book, however, which is confusing and just plain WEIRD...skip it!
Rating: Summary: It'll put you to sleep alright! Review: My daughter never liked this book. My husband nor I ever cared for it either. It didn't keep our daughter's attention at all nor did it "soothe". It just didn't live up to all the hype. We read to our daughter all the time and have since her birth and she loves almost all books, but not this one. She much prefered Sandra Boynton's board books.
Rating: Summary: Classic bedtime book/babies love it Review: I received three GOODNIGHT MOON books as gifts when my baby was born, and now I know why! GOODNIGHT MOON is a soothing, rhythmic book. It is one of two books that lulls my baby to sleep every night. The alternating color and black-and-white pictures are soothing and calming. The bright green colored pictures gradually become darker and darker as sleepy time approaches. The words are melodic and can even feel hypnotic if read in a certain way.
Rating: Summary: I wonder how many times my mother read this to me........... Review: This wonderful tale became a nightly ritual for part of my childhood. I now realize that children love a routine. This is the perfect way for small children to recognize a bedtime sequence of events. I also think it re-enforces vocabulary. I always found the jewel toned illustrations and the peaceful story so soothing. I felt safe when I heard this book. A must for a small child!
Rating: Summary: Goodnight for good Review: This book has a wonderful reputation, but it did not live up to it in my mind. The story line is practically nonexistent as a child tells of the things in his bedroom and then says goodnight to each one in turn. The repetition and rhyming couplets aid in the decoding of words and rhythm of the speech. However, the rhyming and too frequent use of the word "and" mimic neither speech patterns nor the conventions of writing. It must be explained to children beforehand that the text is poetic and not prose. The text can be hard to read in places with red lettering over a purple background. The illustrations switch from colorful, rich cartoons to black and white isolated sketches, which is characteristic of the times when it was published (to save money). But, they do give a feeling of discontinuity. This book did nothing special for me and I don't plan on using it in my classroom...
Rating: Summary: After more than a decade of reading this book to children... Review: I have found that the rhythmic nature of this book is fascinating to children. They can read it over and over again. It isn't too long and many kids want to read it every night as part of their bedtime routine. The only thing I don't like about this version of the book is the loud colors of the illustrations. I seem to remember an earlier version with "quiet pictures" that helped get the child off to sleep rather than being so stimulating. I hope they reintroduce this version. This book is a must for any child's library and makes a great shower or toddler gift.
