Summary: Children's classic
Review: Another great story from Carle. His illustrations are always fantastic, but his stories can be erratic. This on is a dead-on hit. It is the brief story of a caterpillar's feeding frenzy before he makes his metamorphosis into a butterfly. The book introduces children to the days of the week, the names of fruits, and numbers as the caterpillar eats through different foods each day --two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, etc.-- until he finally weaves his cocoon and emerges as a beautiful butterfly. This story is a hit every time. Carle's bright colors and clever die-cut artwork never cease to entertain even the youngest child, and there is surely nothing in nature closer to magic than the emergence of a butterfly. This is a beautiful and fun book that will enthrall any child.

Summary: Long time favorite
Review: This book has been a favorite of mine since childhood. I just purchased a copy in order to share some special memories with my baby. It is a super book written in a simple style about a very hungry caterpillar and teaches numbers and the lifecyle of a butterfly. The board book has holes in the pages to encourage the child to touch the book and count along.

This is a classic and it will always have a special place on my bookshelf.

Summary: What's Not to Love?
Review: I admit, this was and is one of my all-time favorite board books for the very young. I do recommend the hardcover version, only because it will be well-handled if your children are anything like mine were. They will be compelled to stick their fingers in the holes left by that peskily hungry caterpillar, who eats his way through everything in sight!

The caterpillar's face is just captivating. I love it. And he eats, and he eats and he eats...and at the very very end, he becomes a beautiful butterfly! It's just the best illustration of metamorphosis in the world. But I have to warn all scientifically oriented parents out there: My two children were singularly UNimpressed with the butterfly and the fact that the caterpillar had become this beautiful creature! They liked him just as he was! Go figure, right? For whatever reason, they--and I--adored this book.

Summary: Wonderful book for little hands
Review: This has been one of my son's favourite books since he received it at Christmas. He is now 14 months old and just loves to turn the brightly coloured pages of this board book. This book is sturdy! A wonderful story of a caterpillar who keeps eating till he's huge and the ultimate ending of his becoming a beautiful butterfly. Great little story!

Summary: Great!
Review: This is an amazing little book that children will LOVE. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a story you can read over and over and cherish forever. In addition, the plush caterpillar that comes with the book helps little kids enjoy the story more.

Summary: Permanent Fixture
Review: I bought this book for my cousin when she was just 3 and a half. She loves to see and hear the story of the caterpillar that keeps eating and eating. She loves the way the caterpillar was so hungry he seems to have eaten right through the pages of the book.

That is not just a feature that makes the book one more enjoyable, but helps in cognitive development and the concept of object permanence. Because she is able to count along with the all of the things the caterpillar eats, and they are always on the page she understands the concept better.

Because this is a board book, it is durable enough to handle the abuse that toddlers can put a book through.

Why 4 stars?:
Eric Carle has created a masterpiece that will last through the generations. The features of this book cannot be ignored and so, it belongs on the bookshelves of parents and caregivers.

Summary: Educational and fun!
Review: This book is another one I discovered while working in a elementary school. It was a big hit with the K - Gr. 2 kids. They thought the story was interesting. The author actually does a good job of making the caterpillar a character kids could invest in. They wanted to know what was going to happen to it. Would it ever stop eating? The book also helped the children who were having trouble learning the days of the week and counting. Loved the art work, too. Some of the more advanced kids were had lots of questions about the science of the caterpillar turning into a butterfly. This is is just a wonderful book that young boys and girls really enjoy. If you child hasn't read the story yet, it's a must have!

Summary: From Hungry to Beautiful in Five Easy Lessons
Review: My son loves this book and it's easy to see why. With Carle's inimitable artwork and properly-sized finger-holes there for the poking, this is an excellent book for the little ones. And it's educational too, describing the progression from caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly. My son loves saying "He stayed inside for more than twooooo weeeeks!", mimicing me as I read it to him.

Summary: A very cute book for toddlers-and-up
Review: This is the story of a caterpillar who emerges from his egg with an amazing apetite. During his first week, he eats a hole (the board pages have holes in them) through various fruits and other foods familiar to toddlers. My two year old son enjoys the pictures and naming the items consumed by the very hungry caterpillar. Without revealing the ending, the book is also educational in its depiction of the morphing of the caterpillar into its later stages of development.

The board book version is durable, and the pictures are appealing to children. This book is a great one to be included in your collection for children of this age, and perhaps older. I recommend it.

Summary: This book has holes
Review: The genius of this book is the holes. Kids love to stick their fingers in them, or to peer through to the next page ... and to the delight of the parent the holes don't tear or fall off like so many of the doodads in kid's books. This gluttonous caterpillar is an IDEAL choice for a board book.

It's also a cute story that makes children laugh. The Amazon reviews here spoil the plot :-) but really it is a colorful and fun book -- with holes -- and a theme of transformation, that the grown-up can bear reading over and over and over. I wish only that Carle's other books were as good.
